Book The Function of Proverbs in Discourse

Download or read book The Function of Proverbs in Discourse written by Elías Domínguez Barajas and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2010 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded primarily in the ethnography of communication and aligned with the multidisciplinarity of discourse analysis, the book examines the use of proverbs in the daily life of a social network of Mexican-origin transnational families in Chicago and Michoacán, Mexico. Various and detailed analyses of actual proverb use reveal that proverbs in this particular population function as a highly contextualized communicative strategy that serves four discrete social functions: to argue, to advise, to establish rapport, and to entertain. Proposing that the social and cognitive aspects of language use must be combined for a complete understanding of how such genres of language are actually used by regular people in daily life, the author shows how ordinary people use sophisticated cognitive processes to interpret the socially-relevant meanings of proverbs in everyday conversation. The book provides an unusual mix of contextualized discourse analysis that is ethnographic, linguistic, and cognitive, yielding much needed insight into a segment of the Mexican-origin population of the Midwestern U.S., a population whose increasing importance and size is often mentioned, but about which precious few linguistic studies have been conducted. The volume not only helps to fill this void but it is also one of the few studies that focuses on the impact of transnationalism on linguistic practices, regardless of cultural group. Departing from the conventional approach of ignoring the role of everyday-language use in order to focus exclusively on culture, economics, or migrant patterns, the book makes linguistic practice the central issue, and thus affirms that it is language that weaves together the two distant sites of transnational communities, providing a fertile area for understanding the perspectives of the transmigrants themselves.

Book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words

Download or read book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a composite picture of the richness of proverbs as significant expressions of folk wisdom as is manifest from their appearance in art, culture, folklore, history, literature, and the mass media. The book draws attention to the fact that proverbs as metaphorical signs continue to play an important role in oral and written communication. Proverbs as so-called monumenta humana are omnipresent in all facets of life, and while they are neither sacrosanct nor saccharine, they usually offer much common sense or wisdom based on recurrent experiences and observations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Proverb s Principles for Principals

Download or read book Proverb s Principles for Principals written by Rich Kornoelje and published by LifeRich Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-25 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I made the move from teaching into administration, I felt like the visually impaired man in a large department store. He went to the middle of the store, grabbed his Seeing Eye dog by the tail, and started to swing him in large circles overhead. Several clerks rushed to him, saying, “Sir, may we help you?” His reply, “Nope, just looking.” I, too, began to look for ideas. The following pages suggest many ideas that have been selected from a biblical foundation from the book of Proverbs. About the Book For the past several years, it has been my privilege to serve in education, most of which have been in administration. I have always enjoyed the wonderful book of Proverbs and have tried to apply many of its principles to my life. Down through the years, it has been interesting to write down some ideas as to how many of these principles have applied to my administrative responsibilities as a principal. The book of Proverbs is extremely practical, and its concepts can be applied to both public and private (Christian) educators. I have attempted to present the biblical concept, to concisely expand upon it, and to leave the reader with the thought of practical application. I certainly do not pretend to have all the answers toward improving our educational systems. I have often failed at communication, sometimes saying far too much and other times not saying enough. I have assumed others knew my expectations only to find that my directions were not clearly understood. Several of the principles deal with effective communication. I have been privileged to have been blessed with many mentors. Dr. Anthony Fortosis often emphasized this verse referring to David, “So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart and guided them by the skillfulness of his hands” (Psalm 98:72). May it be so for you.

Book A Proverb in Mind

Download or read book A Proverb in Mind written by Richard P. Honeck and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SEE SHORT BLURB FOR ALTERNATE COPY... A complex, intriguing, and important verbal entity, the proverb has been the subject of a vast number of opinions, studies, and analyses. To accommodate the assorted possible audiences, this volume outlines seven views of the proverb -- personal, formal, religious, literary, practical, cultural, and cognitive. Because the author's goal is to provide a scientific understanding of proverb comprehension and production, he draws largely on scholarship stemming from the formal, cultural, and cognitive views. The only book about proverbs that is written from the standpoint of cognitive science, cognitive psychology, and experimentalism, this text provides a larger, more interdisciplinary perspective on the proverb. It also gives a theoretically more integrated approach to proverb cognition. The conceptual base theory of proverb comprehension is extended via the "cognitive ideals hypothesis" so that the theory now addresses issues regarding the creation, production, and pragmatics of proverbs. This hypothesis also has strong implications for a taxonomy of proverbs, proverb comprehension, universal vs. culture-specific aspects of proverbs, and some structural aspects of proverbs. In general, the book extends the challenge of proverb cognition by using much of what cognitive science has to offer. In so doing, the proverb is compared to other forms of figurative language, which is then discussed within the larger rubric of intelligence and the inclination for using indirect modes of communication. Child developmental and brain substrates are also discussed.
