Book Mastering the American Accent with Online Audio

Download or read book Mastering the American Accent with Online Audio written by Lisa Mojsin and published by Barrons Educational Services. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mastering the American Accent is an easy-to-follow approach for reducing the accent of non-native speakers of English. Well-sequenced lessons in the book correspond over eight hours of audio files covering the entire text. The audio program provides clear models (both male and female) to help coach a standard American accent. The program is designed to help users speak Standard American English with clarity, confidence, and accuracy. The many exercises in the book concentrate on topics such as vowel sounds, problematic consonants such as V, W, TH, the American R and T and others. Correct lip and tongue positions for all sounds are discussed in detail. Beyond the production of sounds, the program provides detailed instruction in prosodic elements such as syllable stress, emphasis, intonation, linking words for smoother speech flow, common word contractions, and much more. Additional topics that often confuse ESL students are also discussed and explained. They include distinguishing between casual and formal speech, homophones (e.g., they're and there), recognizing words with silent letters (e.g., comb, receipt), and avoiding embarrassing pronunciation mistakes, such as mixing up "pull" and "pool." Students are familiarized with many irregular English spelling rules and exceptions, and are shown how such irregularities can contribute to pronunciation errors. A native language guide references problematic accent issues for 13 different language backgrounds. Book 365 Proverbs and Proverbial Quotes and Idioms

Download or read book 365 Proverbs and Proverbial Quotes and Idioms written by Aimee Kathartt and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains Days 251-300 of a journal with 365 proverbs and proverb-like quotes and idioms for you to read every day and then practice their wisdom in your own way. The overall aim of the journal is to keep you focused, in a fun way, on what really matters in your life. We are both individuals and social beings, so the interaction with our peers matters as much as preserving our identity. The images accompanying the bits of timeless wisdom are meant to help you link the literal and metaphorical meanings of the pithy strings of words. Thus, you can further understand the ramifications of LOA, the almighty law governing the whole Universe. (Yes, opposites attract, but like attracts like, since the law of attraction is much more than a simple magnet, with plus attracting minus!) The quotes belong to famous authors, like Shakespeare; having been used alone so many times, they have become emblematic of daily life, regardless of period, hence their proverbial value. Please note that some of these witty sayings contain the original gender references: he. However, they refer to all people and both genders. You can start this 365-day journey at any time. Read the proverb or proverbial quote/idiom of the day and let yourself be fully inspired by it. If its subtle meaning is not very clear to you, feel free to seek more information from external sources. In this way, its true power will penetrate the conscious fabric of your mind, sinking deep down into your subconscious self. Afterward, in the allotted box, write down three words that come to mind in relation to the proverb or quote of the day. Don't interfere in any way with the process of assimilating both the form and the meaning of the proverbs. Their wisdom has passed the test of time - so much so that they have been on the lips of so many generations, mantra-like. Consider them powerful affirmations and let them permeate through your conscious ground. If you feel like it, you can write more than three words to personalize each proverb. In case you find new words or phrases, you can look them up in a dictionary, and then write their meaning in the box. In fact, you can write anything your heart dictates related to each proverb - there's plenty of room in the boxes. Also, you can read the whole journal (or each separate book) like any other book, from beginning to end. Or you can pick any number you want, from 1 to 365 (Book 6, from 251 to 300, or even from 1 to 50), and use only that proverb as the perfect guidance for the day. This journal is yours to play with in any way you like - listen to your heart! Whether you are a language learner and want to practice your English in a fun way, or you are a native speaker, this book may be what you are looking for to preserve your greatness in the midst of your everyday life.

Book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases

Download or read book Early American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Bartlett Jere Whiting and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1977 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: p.B. J. Whiting savors proverbial expressions and has devoted much of his lifetime to studying and collecting them; no one knows more about British and American proverbs than he. The present volume, based upon writings in British North America from the earliest settlements to approximately 1820, complements his and Archer Taylor's Dictionary of American Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases, 1820-1880. It differs from that work and from other standard collections, however, in that its sources are primarily not "literary" but instead workaday writings - letters, diaries, histories, travel books, political pamphlets, and the like. The authors represent a wide cross-section of the populace, from scholars and statesmen to farmers, shopkeepers, sailors, and hunters. Mr. Whiting has combed all the obvious sources and hundreds of out-of-the-way publications of local journals and historical societies. This body of material, "because it covers territory that has not been extracted and compiled in a scholarly way before, can justly be said to be the most valuable of all those that Whiting has brought together," according to Albert B. Friedman. "What makes the work important is Whiting's authority: a proverb or proverbial phrase is what BJW thinks is a proverb or proverbial phrase. There is no objective operative definition of any value, no divining rod; his tact, 'feel, ' experience, determine what's the real thing and what is spurious."

Book A Dictionary of English Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases

Download or read book A Dictionary of English Proverbs and Proverbial Phrases written by Thomas Preston and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-04-20 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before writing and books were in common use, proverbs were the principal means of imparting instruction. In modern times there is not so much need to apply these old sayings as a means of educating the people, but they are still constantly met with in the newspapers and in general literature, and they are rightly considered as "The texts of common life." The late Earl Russell very aptly described a proverb as "The wisdom of many and the wit of one." We value proverbs chiefly as moral maxims teaching some practical lesson set forth in concise, pithy sentences, which are fixed in the memory without effort, and retained without being burdensome. They have been found useful for guidance in almost every condition of life; but, on the other hand, it is quite true that many dangerous precepts have been propounded in proverbs, and some of the older ones gave such questionable advice, or were couched in such objectionable language, that they have been very properly omitted from every collection intended, as this is, for general use. Other old proverbs have become obsolete, and as their meaning is now obscure, they have not been included in the Dictionary.
