This book was released on 1999 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Art historians and folklorists have long been aware that well-known artists, as well as anonymous creators of art, often base their work on proverbs, proverbial expressions and comparisons, and wellerisms. Since proverbial metaphors are verbal images, it is no surprise that artists translate these images into various art forms, including woodcuts, misericordes, engravings, emblems, paintings, caricatures, cartoons, comic strips, posters, and graffiti. This international and annotated bibliography contains 378 entries that summarize the impressive scholarship on the interrelationship of iconography and paremiology. The studies range from such wellknown artists as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Brueghel, and Francisco de Goya to the popular art of T-shirts, banners, flags, figurines, and graffiti. Twenty-five illustrations and three indexes of names, pictures, and subjects are also included.

Book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words

Download or read book Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a composite picture of the richness of proverbs as significant expressions of folk wisdom as is manifest from their appearance in art, culture, folklore, history, literature, and the mass media. The book draws attention to the fact that proverbs as metaphorical signs continue to play an important role in oral and written communication. Proverbs as so-called monumenta humana are omnipresent in all facets of life, and while they are neither sacrosanct nor saccharine, they usually offer much common sense or wisdom based on recurrent experiences and observations."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Behold the Proverbs of a People

Download or read book Behold the Proverbs of a People written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 679 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thirteen chapters of this book comprise an intriguing and informative entry into the world of proverb scholarship, illustrating that proverbs have always been and continue to be wisdom's international currency. The first section of the book focuses on the field of paremiology (proverb studies) in general, the spread of Anglo-American proverbs in Europe, and the phenomenon of modern proverbs. The second section analyzes the use of proverbs in the world of politics, including a chapter on President Obama, while the third concentrates on the uses of proverbs in literature. The final section ends with detailed cultural studies of the origin, history, dissemination, use, function, and meaning of specific proverbs. Noted scholar Wolfgang Mieder shows that proverbs matter in culture, literature, and politics. Proverbs remain part and parcel of oral and written communication, and, he demonstrates, they deserve to be studied from a range of viewpoints. While various chapters deal with a variety of issues and approaches, they cohere through a rhetorical perspective that looks at the text, texture, and context of proverbs as speech acts that make a noteworthy impact on culture and society. Whether proverbs appear in everyday speech, on the radio, on television, in films, on the pages of newspapers or magazines, in advertisements, in literary works, or in political speeches, they serve as formulaic verbal devices to add authoritative weight through tradition, convention, and wisdom.

Book Iconography of Power

  • Author : Victoria E. Bonnell
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1998-02-05
  • ISBN : 9780520924062
  • Pages : 404 pages

Download or read book Iconography of Power written by Victoria E. Bonnell and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1998-02-05 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters at visual propaganda, the Bolsheviks produced thousands of vivid and compelling posters after they seized power in October 1917. Intended for a semi-literate population that was accustomed to the rich visual legacy of the Russian autocracy and the Orthodox Church, political posters came to occupy a central place in the regime's effort to imprint itself on the hearts and minds of the people and to remold them into the new Soviet women and men. In this first sociological study of Soviet political posters, Victoria Bonnell analyzes the shifts that took place in the images, messages, styles, and functions of political art from 1917 to 1953. Everyone who lived in Russia after the October revolution had some familiarity with stock images of the male worker, the great communist leaders, the collective farm woman, the capitalist, and others. These were the new icons' standardized images that depicted Bolshevik heroes and their adversaries in accordance with a fixed pattern. Like other "invented traditions" of the modern age, iconographic images in propaganda art were relentlessly repeated, bringing together Bolshevik ideology and traditional mythologies of pre-Revolutionary Russia. Symbols and emblems featured in Soviet posters of the Civil War and the 1920s gave visual meaning to the Bolshevik worldview dominated by the concept of class. Beginning in the 1930s, visual propaganda became more prescriptive, providing models for the appearance, demeanor, and conduct of the new social types, both positive and negative. Political art also conveyed important messages about the sacred center of the regime which evolved during the 1930s from the celebration of the heroic proletariat to the deification of Stalin. Treating propaganda images as part of a particular visual language, Bonnell shows how people "read" them—relying on their habits of seeing and interpreting folk, religious, commercial, and political art (both before and after 1917) as well as the fine art traditions of Russia and the West. Drawing on monumental sculpture and holiday displays as well as posters, the study traces the way Soviet propaganda art shaped the mentality of the Russian people (the legacy is present even today) and was itself shaped by popular attitudes and assumptions. Iconography of Power includes posters dating from the final decades of the old regime to the death of Stalin, located by the author in Russian, American, and English libraries and archives. One hundred exceptionally striking posters are reproduced in the book, many of them never before published. Bonnell places these posters in a historical context and provides a provocative account of the evolution of the visual discourse on power in Soviet Russia.

Book excerpt: "Walter Gibson, dean of Bruegel scholars, has done it again. His new book, like the proverbs it studies, instructs gently yet plainly in compact size. While it figures forth the depths of Bruegel's own passion for proverbs, this wide-ranging period study also shows the cultural breadth of Dutch proverbs in other media, including the witty world of urban rhetoricians. These 'loquacious pictures' have their adept translator in Walter Gibson."--Larry Silver, author of Peasant Scenes and Landscapes "This is an important book for anyone interested in the representation of the verbal in Northern Renaissance art, and Gibson, who has long conveyed the latest research into Netherlandish iconography to the English-speaking world, an authoritative guide to this neglected aspect of the intellectual climate of the period. Here is new light illuminating some of the lesser-known works of Bosch and Bruegel, but also those of much less well-known artists who chose to pictorialise the idiom in an era--as this study triumphantly demonstrates--in which the proverb came into its own and the verbal became visual not just in manuscripts and paintings but in the very market-place."--Malcolm Jones, author of The Secret Middle Ages

Book David Teniers The Younger

Download or read book David Teniers The Younger written by Jane P. Davidson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-12 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For some time there has existed a need for a new account of the life and stylistic development of David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). This need is made all the more obvious by the fact that Adolf Rosenberg's book, writ-ten in 1898, remains a most complete study of Teniers. 1 De Peyre's Biogra-phie Critique of 1910 added little information not already published by Rosenberg.2 A number of recent articles have dealt with various aspects of Teniers's life or style, but none has been entirely satisfactory. 5 Some are incomplete; others contain errors gleaned from earlier sources. None has dealt with the artist's stylistic evolution from his early works to the works of the mature Teniers.
