Book excerpt: "Letters for Logan" is the heartfelt story of a mother's timeless love for her son, and the legacy she is compelled to leave her grandson. Air Force Capt. Derek Argel, 28, was larger-than-life--athletic, loving, dedicated, loyal and above all, a son to Debbie, husband to Wendy and father to Logan. Within days of his tragic death in the line of duty on Memorial Day of 2005 in Iraq, the first letter to Logan arrived. Then another came, and they kept coming, from friends, colleagues, warriors and family. They still arrive, even years after the Combat Controller's death, each one weaving an enduring portrait for a little boy of his fallen father, gone too soon. Proceeds from this book will go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, rated as a four-star charity by Charity Navigator. The foundation provides full scholarship grants, educational and family counseling to the surviving children of special operations personnel who die in operational or training missions, and immediate financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel and their families. The family of Capt. Derek Argel believes wholeheartedly in the mission of the foundation. "First there, That Others may Live" Nora Wallace

Book excerpt: Lszl: Th e Gentleman from Budapest is the stirring biography of author Steve Kossas father, who was born into a well-to-do family at the beginning of the twentieth century in Budapest, Hungary. Tracing Lszls life, this story chronicles the ways in which the monumental events of that era transformed his path. The Great Depression, currency devaluation and inflation, the world wars, the Holocaust, communism and Russian occupation, imprisonment in gulags, escape, refugee status, and the familys relocation as displaced persons all played parts in his harrowing life experiences. His life as a new Australian started in migrant camps in the outback of New South Wales. From here Lszl eventually moved to Sydney and then to Hobart with his family. Although he was trained as a chemist, he worked in all manner of employment in order to provide for his family in their adopted country. Later, entrepreneurial business ventures followed as he attempted to make up for all that he had lost of his past life in Hungary. Lszl: Th e Gentleman from Budapest vividly recounts the challenges that the authors father faced as his world crumbled around him in Hungary and he sought and later built a new life for his family in Australia.

Book Let s Get It On

Download or read book Let s Get It On written by "Big" John McCarthy and published by Medallion Media Group. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An intimate profile of the legendary mixed martial arts (MMA) referee, this first full-length autobiography of pop culture icon “Big” John McCarthy details every aspect of his life—from his strong-handed Los Angeles upbringing to his involvement in the naming of the sport, his role in its regulation, and MMA’s rise in stature. The narrative follows “Big” John through his 22-year career as a Los Angeles police officer, where he taught recruits arrest and control procedures as well as survival tactics, then his 15-year career as MMA’s premier official in the chain-linked cage. A fixture of the sport, “Big” John started refereeing at UFC 2 in 1994 when MMA was in its infancy and went on to officiate at every major UFC event but two until 2007. Following a one-year hiatus as a color commentator and on-camera analyst for MMA and boxing events, he returned to MMA refereeing in 2008. In his own words, "Big" John relates his insider’s perspective from the midst of many of the sport’s greatest moments—from Tito Ortiz–Ken Shamrock I at UFC 40 in 2002 to Randy Couture–Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 in March of 2007—along with his account of the birth of the sport in America, its evolution, and MMA’s ongoing struggles for acceptance.

Download or read book Paper Bullets written by Kip Fulbeck and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning videomaker, performance artist, and pop-culture provocateur Kip Fulbeck has captivated audiences worldwide with his mixture of high comedy and personal narrative. In Paper Bullets, his first novel, Fulbeck taps into his Cantonese, English, Irish, and Welsh heritage, weaving a fictional autobiography from 27 closely linked stories, essays, and confessions. By turns sensitive and forceful, passionate and callous, Fulbeck confronts the politics of race, sex, and Asian American masculinity head-on without apology, constantly questioning where Hapas fit in a country that ignores multiracial identity. Raised in southern California by a Chinese-born mother and a Caucasian father, Fulbeck pushes the conventions of literary form as he simultaneously draws from, recreates, and fabricates his own life history. His range of experiences--from college professor to youth outreach volunteer, blues player to surfer and lifeguard--informs his witty and humane writing. Like himself, his protagonist is a young man shaped by the conflicting mores, stigmas, desires, and codes of male conduct in America. He searches for and mismanages love and independence, continually experimenting with sex along the way. Sometimes hilarious, always heartfelt, surfing the trivia of pop culture and sound bits, his inner voice shifts continually among the real, the perceived, and the imagined.

Book excerpt: Early adulthood is a time of possibility, uncertainty, decision, and hope. During these years, individuals determine how they will approach life challenges and opportunities. In On Our Way: Christian Practices for Living a Whole Life, writers from a variety of backgrounds address topics of particular relevance to young adults. The essays are grouped in 5 sections that together express the whole: living a whole life attentively together in the real world for the good of all in response to God On Our Way looks at common subjects in fresh, meaningful ways. It presents "study," for example, as "not synonymous with reading books or with academic reflection, though it may well include these." Instead, this essay explains study as "a particular kind of attending to Christ and the world, a particular stance of curiosity, vigilance, and openness to learning—an openness that extends even to unlearning what we have previously learned to take for granted." Other chapters explore such subjects as discerning God's call friendship and intimacy care for creation knowing and loving our neighbors of other faiths doing justice As young adults move away from the confines of home, school, and church youth group, this book will serve as an excellent resource. While it speaks from a Christian perspective, its broad approach makes it appealing both to Christians and to those who consider themselves "spiritual but not religious." Well-suited for individual reading or group discussion, On Our Way is an excellent companion for young adults seeking their place in today's world.
