Book excerpt: In this thrilling novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra—the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Sleepers, Gangster, and Midnight Angels—organized crime goes to war with international terrorism in the name of one man’s quest for revenge. My name is Vincent Marelli, though most people call me The Wolf. You’ve never met me, and if you’re lucky you never will. But in more ways than you could think of, I own you. I run the biggest criminal operation in the world. We’re invisible but we’re everywhere. Wherever you go, whatever you do, however it is you spend your money, a piece of it lands in our pockets. You would think that with that kind of power I would be invincible. You would be wrong. I made a mistake, one that a guy like me can never afford to make. I let my guard down. And because I did, my wife and daughters are gone. Murdered by terrorists with a lethal ax to grind. That was my mistake. But it was also theirs. I wasn’t looking for a war with them. No one in my group was. But they’ve left me with nothing but a desire for revenge—so a war is what they’ll get. The full strength of international organized crime against every known terrorist group working today. Crime versus chaos. We will protect our interests, and I will protect my son. We won’t get them all, but I will get my revenge, or I will die trying. They will know my name. They will feel my wrath. They will fear The Wolf. Praise for The Wolf “Lorenzo Carcaterra is one of my favorite writers in the world, and The Wolf is his best book yet. In it you’ll meet the superbly crafted crime boss Vincent Marelli—and then you’ll spend this riveting read trying to decide whether Marelli, like Michael Corleone, is a hero or a villain. Pick up a copy of The Wolf and you won’t put it down until the surprise ending!”—Lisa Scottoline, New York Times bestselling author of Accused “The Wolf crackles with the geopolitical high stakes of Homeland, the intrigue and lore of The Godfather, and the clock-ticking final showdown of 24. No one combines such themes as Renaissance art, global terror, and all things Italian like Lorenzo Carcaterra.”—Andrew Gross, New York Times bestselling author of Everything to Lose “Binds a strong confessional voice with a taut revenge plot.”—New York “[A] high-octane thriller.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review) “Action fans will love it.”—Booklist Praise for Lorenzo Carcaterra “Crackles with action . . . a riveting and ingenious read that will keep you turning the pages.”—Douglas Preston, on Midnight Angels “A powerful read . . . with plenty of action and dialogue as authentic as the streets of New York.”—St. Petersburg Times, on Paradise City “Terrifying and heartbreaking . . . a brilliant, troubling, important book.”—Jonathan Kellerman, on Sleepers “A brilliant, multilayered novel that breathes and bleeds on every page. This book transcends the genre of crime fiction. It is a full-blooded novel and an epic read.”—Robert Crais, on Gangster

Book Work and Other Sins

Download or read book Work and Other Sins written by Charlie LeDuff and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2005-01-25 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Detroit: An American Autopsy "Except for a few drinks, nothing is free in Charlie LeDuff's blunt and touching Work and Other Sins. The laughter and wisdom are hard won, the lessons are often painful... the sad tales and wit from the bar rail are endless and timeless." --The New York Times Book Review Charlie LeDuff is that rare breed of news reporter—one who can cover hard-to-get-at stories in a unique and deeply personal style. In Work and Other Sins, he gives his incomparable take on New York City and its denizens—the bars, the workingmen, the gamblers, the eccentrics, the lonesome, and the wise. Whether writing about a racetrack gambler, a firefighter with a broken heart, or a pair of bickering brothers and their Coney Island bar, LeDuff takes the reader into the lives of his subjects to explore their fears, faults, and fantasies as well as their own small niches of the globe. The result is an at turns riotous, dirt-under-the-nails, contemplative, salty, joyous, whiskey-tinged, and utterly unique vision of life in the Big Apple.

Book The Big Rig

  • Author : Steve Viscelli
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2016-04-12
  • ISBN : 0520962710
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book The Big Rig written by Steve Viscelli and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-haul trucks have been described as sweatshops on wheels. The typical long-haul trucker works the equivalent of two full-time jobs, often for little more than minimum wage. But it wasn’t always this way. Trucking used to be one of the best working-class jobs in the United States. The Big Rig explains how this massive degradation in the quality of work has occurred, and how companies achieve a compliant and dedicated workforce despite it. Drawing on more than 100 in-depth interviews and years of extensive observation, including six months training and working as a long-haul trucker, Viscelli explains in detail how labor is recruited, trained, and used in the industry. He then shows how inexperienced workers are convinced to lease a truck and to work as independent contractors. He explains how deregulation and collective action by employers transformed trucking’s labor markets--once dominated by the largest and most powerful union in US history--into an important example of the costs of contemporary labor markets for workers and the general public.

Book In the Interest of Others

Download or read book In the Interest of Others written by John S. Ahlquist and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A groundbreaking study of labor unions that advances a new theory of organizational leadership and governance In the Interest of Others develops a new theory of organizational leadership and governance to explain why some organizations expand their scope of action in ways that do not benefit their members directly. John Ahlquist and Margaret Levi document eighty years of such activism by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union in the United States and the Waterside Workers Federation in Australia. They systematically compare the ILWU and WWF to the Teamsters and the International Longshoremen's Association, two American transport industry labor unions that actively discouraged the pursuit of political causes unrelated to their own economic interests. Drawing on a wealth of original data, Ahlquist and Levi show how activist organizations can profoundly transform the views of members about their political efficacy and the collective actions they are willing to contemplate. They find that leaders who ask for support of projects without obvious material benefits must first demonstrate their ability to deliver the goods and services members expect. These leaders must also build governance institutions that coordinate expectations about their objectives and the behavior of members. In the Interest of Others reveals how activist labor unions expand the community of fate and provoke preferences that transcend the private interests of individual members. Ahlquist and Levi then extend this logic to other membership organizations, including religious groups, political parties, and the state itself.

Book Man for All Seasons

Download or read book Man for All Seasons written by David Grant and published by Penguin Random House New Zealand Limited. This book was released on 2012-03-01 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major biography of Ken Douglas, the most powerful union leader in modern New Zealand history. Ken Douglas was raised in a hardworking, tough-talking, union-focussed Wellington family and got into union politics as a very young working man. Hard-nosed, pragmatic and never scared of a scrap, he rose through the ranks, got deeper into left-wing ideology and activity with his membership of the Socialist Unity Party, and ultimately became head of the FOL, and the most powerful unionist in the land. Depending on your politics, he was one of the most respected or the most hated men in the country; ironic then that in later years he was appointed to some of the country's most important boards. In this powerful biography, David Grant -- who had unprecedented access to Douglas -- explores the facets of this remarkable man, who was there during the union movement's most powerful days and watched its emasculation. It is a unique portrait of a unique New Zealander, whose life has been this country's times.
