Book A Distant Place

Download or read book A Distant Place written by Mark F. Harris and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of the 230 best student essays submitted in English composition classes at the Teachers College of Qingdao University in Qingdao, Shandong, P. R. China, during the spring semester of 2000. The stories were submitted to fulfill assignments given by American instructor, Mark F. Harris, for his students to write about their grandparents, parents, family life and some of their own childhood and school experiences as well as to contemplate the future. In doing research for the essays, a few of the students had the good fortune to interview their grandparents, while many more were able to question their parents. They wrote about times of hardship, sacrifice and deprivation. They gave brief but graphic accounts of the Japanese invasion and occupation of China, the War of Liberation and the founding of modern China, the Cultural Revolution and of hardships associated with famine and poverty. Some of the essays described the common relationships that exist in the traditional Chinese family. In writing about themselves, most students related memorable events of their normal, carefree childhood. They also mentioned encountering frustrations in their growing up and changing years and of competing with classmates in school activities. Almost universally, they wrote about the challenge of preparing for and passing the university entrance examination. Many essays conveyed messages portraying strong cultural values, such as honesty, perseverance, loyalty, devotion, justice and responsibility. Stories depicting situations of great seriousness are balanced with those reflecting childhood innocence and humor. The students wrote in English, which is their second language. Mr. Harris quickly learned there was a unique style to their "Chinese English". They were able to superimpose English over their Chinese language and thought patterns, resulting in writing with less precision and exactness when compared to American usage. Yet, beautiful imagery and poetic expressions seemed to flow naturally. Even though the reader may have no knowledge of the Chinese language, most probably, he will unknowingly be reading "Chinese" when studying these essays. A good example of this beautiful language is expressed in an essay by Liu Ranji (James), who concluded that "a distant place is not only a concept of space, it is a higher pursuit in spirit. The pursuit will be endless, since a distant place is like a beacon that guides my journey in life." The title of the book comes from this essay, since the "pursuit" described by the writer in many ways parallels the author's "pursuit", even in traveling to "a distant place" called China. This timely collection of essays, written by some of China's brightest young people, gives clear insight into a way of life that properly needs to be recorded.

Book excerpt: If you are not happy with the way your life is heading, you need to reroute its direction; to overcome your failure, you need to review your direction for being an overcomerto revalidate your desire for living, and not relive your failure, both inside and outside. I cannot give you your goal, but I can give you the requirements to reach that goal. That is resonating inside of you. The requirements are to believe in yourself, trust in God, for he will sustain you. I have seen what successful people do, over and over again, after overcoming failure. They forget how they got over. We need to give glory to the one that glorifies. This book can help you to relive and take charge of your new life. Not only will it display failures of the past, where it is willful, or even the negative approach you may have taken, which may drown the readers ability or their thoughts to survive. It will also direct us to the know-hows to maneuver changes and maximize life now "When Self Fails You, God will sustain You." This book will offer you a reality-based avenue to those seeking to be sustained by God. The author believes that there is nothing more important than your genuine decision for overcoming failures. Life is a series of decisions you make; you make them, and unless you accept the responsibility for where you are right now, you will never overcome failures of the past. For the years that lie ahead, mixing both sacred and secular insights has a unique blend of practical and pragmatic leads, coupled with good taste of wisdom that scripture has given. For my readers, this new book is, without question, a transformation for the soul; it gives permission to relive and the know-hows to achieve the greater aspects of living that God grants us. Book Sleeping with Schubert

Download or read book Sleeping with Schubert written by Bonnie Marson and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seems that the legendary composer Franz Schubert is alive—well, sort of—in the twenty-first century: His soul has taken up residence in the body of Brooklyn lawyer Liza Durbin. Even more astonishing, so has his prodigious gift. A mediocre pianist at best as a child, Liza can suddenly pound out concertos and compose masterly music out of the blue. But how can a brilliant male Austrian composer from the nineteenth century coexist in the everyday life of a modern American woman? And how can Liza explain what’s happened to her without everyone thinking she’s gone off the deep end? Fortunately, the evidence is tangible, and Liza is soon brought into the esteemed halls of Juilliard under the tutelage of the revered—and feared—Greta Pretsky, a humorless woman whose only interest in Liza is her channeling of Schubert. Greta’s greedy for her next big star, and the entire New York City press is whispering of Liza’s brilliance as the public awaits her debut at Carnegie Hall. Even Liza’s boyfriend, Patrick, seems more in love with her than ever. Yet as Liza yields to Franz’s great passion, her own life and identity threaten to elude her. Why was she chosen as the vessel for this musical genius—and when, if ever, will he leave? Their entwined souls follow a path of ecstasy, peril, and surprise as they search for the final, liberating truth. A strikingly original novel, Sleeping with Schubert plays on years of speculation regarding Franz Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony.” Bonnie Marson’s extraordinary imagination supposes that Schubert cannot truly die until the mystery is solved—even if it means being resurrected in the body of a deceptively ordinary woman. Filled with drama and humor, this irresistible novel explores love, genius, and identity in ways that will engage and amaze readers.

Wrong. Oh so wrong. Seems Lyria and Jason’s exploits spilled over into my world once again. And Jason wasn’t my sweet, rambunctious, playful and charming nephew anymore.
