Download or read book Shakespeare s Military Spouses and Twenty First Century Warfare written by Kelsey Ridge and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-05 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a fresh look at the military spouses in Shakespeare’s Othello, 1 Henry IV, Julius Caesar, Troilus and Cressida, Macbeth, and Coriolanus, vital to understanding the plays themselves. By analysing the characters as military spouses, we can better understand current dynamics in modern American civilian and military culture as modern American military spouses live through the War on Terror. Shakespeare's Military Spouses and Twenty-First-Century Warfare explains what these plays have to say about the role of military families and cultural constructions of masculinity both in the texts themselves and in modern America. Concerns relevant to today’s military families – domestic violence, PTSD, infertility, the treatment of queer servicemembers, war crimes, and the growing civil-military divide – pervade Shakespeare’s works. These parallels to the contemporary lived experience are brought out through reference to memoirs written by modern-day military spouses, sociological studies of the American armed forces, and reports issued by the Department of Defence. Shakespeare’s military spouses create a discourse that recognizes the role of the military in national defence but criticizes risky or damaging behaviours and norms, promoting the idea of a martial identity that permits military defence without the dangers of toxic masculinity. Meeting at the intersection of Shakespeare Studies, trauma studies, and military studies, this focus on military spouses is a unique and unprecedented resource for academics in these fields, as well as for groups interested in Shakespeare and theatre as a way of thinking through and responding to psychiatric issues and traumatic experiences.

Download or read book Women at Risk written by Noonie Fortin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women At Risk: We Also Served is about women who served our country since before World War II to present day. All branches of the military are included, officers and enlisted personnel, as well as women who volunteered as civilians going to a war zone, those that stayed stateside, and other loved ones. Included are clerks, drivers, heavy equipment operators, nurses, USO and ARC volunteers, and more. These women explain some of the things they did or do in the military or as civilians. They tell us why they volunteered, how their lives were changed, and answer the question, “Would I do it again?” More than sixty women are profiled in this book. Their stories are finally being shared—many for the first time. This book is for readers of all ages including students. It will encourage patriotism as you read each chapter. They encourage both the reader and listener to talk more and ask questions about their own family military background. Noonie Fortin realized there was a need for this type of book each time she entered a bookstore and couldn’t find very many books about women who served their country.

Download or read book Warriors in Uniform written by Herman J. Viola and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Native Americans have willingly served in the U.S. military during every one of its wars, and their numbers in the armed forces today exceed the percentage of any other ethnic group. What inspires these young people to enlist? One factor is the opportunity to continue a proud warrior tradition in which the deeds of battle are considered the highest form of bravery - a cultural context that is detailed in Warriors in Uniform." "Author Herman J. Viola sets this story against a chronology of conflict from the 1770s to the present, revealing the roles of Native Soldiers in America's two wars with Britain, the poignant reason 15,000 American Indians wore Confederate gray, and the distinction with which they have served in both world wars as well as Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq." "Illustrated with archival images, exhibit-worthy photo essays, and artifact galleries from museum events nationwide, this special edition of Warriors in Uniform holds fascination for everyone interested in history, culture, biography, and art, as well as deeper truths, for all of us, about the way we view one another as fellow citizens of the nation and the world."--BOOK JACKET.
