Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among Southeast Alaska’s best-known tourist attractions are its totem parks, showcases for monumental wood sculptures by Tlingit and Haida artists. Although the art form is centuries old, the parks date back only to the waning years of the Great Depression, when the US government reversed its policy of suppressing Native practices and began to pay Tlingit and Haida communities to restore older totem poles and move them from ancestral villages into parks designed for tourists. Dramatically altering the patronage and display of historic Tlingit and Haida crests, this New Deal restoration project had two key aims: to provide economic aid to Native people during the Depression and to recast their traditional art as part of America’s heritage. Less evident is why Haida and Tlingit people agreed to lend their crest monuments to tourist attractions at a time when they were battling the US Forest Service for control of their traditional lands and resources. Drawing on interviews and government records, as well as on the histories represented by the totem poles themselves, Emily Moore shows how Tlingit and Haida leaders were able to channel the New Deal promotion of Native art as national art into an assertion of their cultural and political rights. Just as they had for centuries, the poles affirmed the ancestral ties of Haida and Tlingit lineages to their lands. Book excerpt: Originally published in England in 1934, this searing, still timely novel offers and incisive critique of the sexual politics and militarism of England, and the West as a whole. Proud Man is told from the perspective of a "Genuine Person" who has been thrown back in time thousands of years from a peaceful future society. The Genuine Person comes from a people that are androgynous, self-fertilizing, and vegetarian; they live without a national government and artificial social divisions of gender and class. Taking on first female, then male form, the "Genuine Person" confronts the deeply troubled reality of England in the 1930s, still battered after one World War and on the road to another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During World War II, tens of thousands of African Americans served in segregated combat units in U.S. armed forces. The majority of these units were found in the U.S. Army, and African Americans served in every one of the combat arms. They found opportunities for leadership unparalleled in the rest of American society at the time. Several reached the field grade officer ranks, and one officer reached the rank of brigadier general. Beyond the Army, the Marine Corps refused to enlist African Americans until ordered to do so by the president in June 1942, and two African American combat units were formed and did see service during the war. While the U.S. Navy initially resisted extending the role of African American sailors beyond kitchens, eventually the crew of two ships was composed exclusively of African Americans. The Coast Guard became the first service to integrate—initially with two shipboard experiments and then with the integration of most of their fleet. Finally, the famous Tuskegee airmen are covered in the chapter on air warfare. Proud Warriors makes the case that the wartime experiences of combat units such as the Tank Battalions and the Tuskegee Airmen ultimately convinced President Truman to desegregate the military, without which the progress of the Civil Rights Movement might also have been delayed.

Book Proud Heritage 3 volumes

Download or read book Proud Heritage 3 volumes written by Chuck Stewart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 1611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking three-volume reference traces the roots and development of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights and issues in the United States from the pre-colonial period to the present day. With the social, religious, and political stigmas attached to alternative lifestyles throughout history, most homosexuals, bisexuals, and transgender people lived covertly for much of, if not all of, their lives. Likewise, the narrative of our country excludes the contributions, struggles, and historical achievements of this group. This revealing, chronologically arranged reference work uncovers the rich story of the LGBT community in the United States and discusses the politics, culture, and issues affecting it since the early 17th century. Author Chuck Stewart traces the evolution of LGBT issues as part of our nation's shared cultural past and modern-day experience. Volume 1 focuses on the origins of the movement with the founding of Jamestown in 1607 through the 1970s and the beginning of gay rights activism in the United States. Volume 2 spans the 1980s and the AIDs pandemic through the present-day issues of marriage equality. Volume 3 gives a concise review of this society in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.

Book The Long Journey Home

Download or read book The Long Journey Home written by Maudy G. Testro-Meijer and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Harry and Christine Meijer on its face is not unique. Throughout history, countless individuals have endured immense physical and psychological trauma as a result of war and authoritarian regimes. These tyrannical leaders motivated by a desire for absolute control and subjugation of the population, inflicted immense suffering upon civilian populations. Born in a country under colonial rule, Harry and Christine in their formative years were undoubtedly marked by a confluence of economic and cultural challenges. However, the true crucible of their lives emerged at the dawn of their adulthood, when they were confronted with adversities of unimaginable magnitude. Their narrative encompasses the reality of lingering PTSD suffered by Harry and Christine, which significantly impacted their nine children during tumultuous migrations across three continents, demanding constant adaptation to unfamiliar cultures and languages. Despite facing these significant hardships, the remarkable resilience and ultimate triumph over adversity stands as a powerful testament to the human spirit’s capacity for perseverance. Grounded in meticulous historical detail and enriched with poignant anecdotes, this work offers readers the opportunity to glean novel insights into the hardships endured by millions in the South Pacific during World War II and also serves as a source of inspiration for overcoming their own challenges.
