Download or read book Seven Sisters and a Brother written by Marilyn Allman Maye and published by Mango Media Inc.. This book was released on 2019-12-12 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 New Release in 1960s History of the U.S. — A Story of Student Activists and Civil Rights Meet the inspirational students: This narrative tells the story of seven women and one man at the heart of a sit-in protesting decreased enrollment and hiring of African Americans at Swarthmore College and demanding a Black Studies curriculum. The book, written by the former students themselves, also includes autobiographical chapters, providing a unique cross-sectional view into the lives of young people during the Civil Rights era. Correcting media representation: For years the media and some in the school community portrayed the peaceful protest in a negative light—this collective narrative provides a very necessary and overdue retelling of the revolution that took place at Swarthmore College in 1969. The group of eight student protestors have only recently begun to receive credit for the school’s greater inclusiveness, as well as the influence their actions had on universities around the country. Stories that inspire change: This book chronicles the historical eight-day sit-in at Swarthmore College, and the authors also include untold stories about their family backgrounds and their experiences as student activists. They share how friendships, out-of-the-box alliances, and a commitment to moral integrity strengthened them to push through and remain resilient in the face of adversity. The incredible true story featured in Seven Sisters and a Brother will teach you: • No matter how old or established, institutions can change and will continue to change • How to identify fears and work to overcome them • That truth will prevail when we unite with others and refuse to accept surrender If you’ve read titles such as Warriors Don’t Cry, Between the World and Me, and Pulse of Perseverance, then you’ll love Seven Sisters and a Brother.

Book excerpt: The south side of Billsview, Texas, is a part of the city that has a bad reputation of being called labels such as ghetto and hood. A lot of the city’s poverty, government aid, and crime occur in the south part of the city. David Williams is a former high school football All-American local legend who experienced a setback but rebounded in the US Army, which led to him being an Army Ranger who was awarded the Medal of Honor. After getting wounded and medically discharged against his will, he came back to his mother’s house to keep his younger siblings—RJ, Ashely, and Mya—in line and on the right path. With a mother who does not seem to care about her children and a father who none of David’s siblings have seen before, David wants to please God while keeping his siblings away from the devil’s seductions of illegal activity, gangs, drugs, teenage pregnancy, and STDs. He wants them all to graduate high school, go to college, and make it out of the south side of town that he blames for ruining so many young lives as he blames it for almost ruining his own.

Download or read book Daddy I Forgive You written by Bob Vance and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having been robbed of the kind of normal childhood that many children take for granted, I have majored in the details of life, both good and bad, and that has made me who I am. Staying five years in a hospital because of a devastating attack of polio took me away from my family and from the father of my youth. When I returned home at the age of six, I started getting attached to my father. At the age of ten, after additional corrective surgery, my father left our lives. Those formative years without him caused my life to go into a massive, deadly spiral toward all things bad. I was confused, lonely, and sometimes depressed. My hatred for him grew almost daily. I learned to steal because I was hungry. We received no support from him. The man who had left us began another family and never even tried to contact me. This drove me toward having a hatred for him that I wanted everyone to know. Stealing became easy. I started doing it for other reasons, such as to gain the acceptance of my peers. After losing interest in school and while trying to pull through the common nightmares that would wake me, I was rescued when God began to speak to my heart in various ways. I ignored that help until finally, at fifteen years old, I couldn't push that voice away any longer. I surrendered my heart to Christ. Although I had been forgiven, I had not been faced with forgiving the man who had destroyed me. The years went by, and the inevitable happened. I accidentally met him. It was my daddy. After a verbal fight, I was told that I was never allowed to see him again""even in death. After I became a husband, a father, and a pastor, I realized that I had to forgive the man who had divorced me when I was a child and penalized me when I was a young man and was privately waiting for me to reach him. Being faced with the opportunity to seek him out, reach him in love, and forgive him, I did just that. The opportunity to be reunited with this man wasn't easy, but I did just that. I met him, forgave him, and spent many wonderful days over the next few years with him. He left me when I was at my most vulnerable, but I came into his life when he was at his most vulnerable too. The past now being dead to both of us, I fell in love with him with a love that I never even dreamed was possible. Being called to be with him, I made the choice to make up for the time that we had both lost. The previous dead, dark, lonely years were erased and replaced with months of laughter, father-son talks, visits, phone calls, and opportunities to say "I love you." I was barely away from his bedside when they called and told me he had died. I had not just lost my newfound friend; I had lost my daddy. I will never get over that.

Download or read book Why Didn t You Tell Me written by Carmen Rita Wong and published by Crown. This book was released on 2023-08-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An immigrant mother’s long-held secrets upend her daughter’s understanding of her family, her identity, and her place in the world in this powerful and dramatic memoir “Riveting . . . [Wong] tells her story in vivid conversational prose that will make readers feel they’re listening to a master storyteller on a long car trip. . . . Hers is a hero’s journey.”—The New York Times Book Review ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: PopSugar, Kirkus Reviews My mother carried a powerful secret. A secret that shaped my life and the lives of everyone around me in ways she could not have imagined. Carmen Rita Wong has always craved a sense of belonging: First as a toddler in a warm room full of Black and brown Latina women, like her mother, Lupe, cheering her dancing during her childhood in Harlem. And in Chinatown, where her immigrant father, “Papi” Wong, a hustler, would show her and her older brother off in opulent restaurants decorated in red and gold. Then came the almost exclusively white playgrounds of New Hampshire after her mother married her stepfather, Marty, who seemed to be the ideal of the white American dad. As Carmen entered this new world with her new family—Lupe and Marty quickly had four more children—her relationship with her mother became fraught with tension, suspicion, and conflict, explained only years later by the secrets her mother had kept for so long. And when those secrets were revealed, bringing clarity to so much of Carmen’s life, it was too late for answers. When her mother passed away, Carmen wanted to shake her soul by its shoulders and demand: Why didn’t you tell me? A former national television host, advice columnist, and professor, Carmen searches to understand who she really is as she discovers her mother’s hidden history, facing the revelations that seep out. Why Didn’t You Tell Me? is a riveting and poignant story of Carmen’s experience of race and culture in America and how they shape who we think we are.

Book excerpt: A cloud passed over the sun, casting a broad, dark shadow across the field. As the sun reappeared, he was just hanging there now, dangling off the tree stand. She stood up, stretched, walked over, mounted her horse, left the cover at the edge of the woods, and trotted across the field toward the hanging man. “Charles.” Again, a little louder. “Charles.” Hearing a familiar voice, he opened his eyes, startled at seeing her face so close. She sat on her horse about three feet away. He tried to reach out, but his arms were numb and hung limp at his sides, barely moving. He could only watch as she turned her horse around and walked over to a tree. She dismounted and walked back to where he was hanging and picked up his rifle off the ground. “Get me down,” he ordered and realized how weak his voice sounded. He cleared his throat and loudly demanded, “Get me down now!” repeating the statement, trying to sound as if he had some power in the situation. He looked down at her. She was smiling at him. He tried to change his tone, pleading, “Please, please help me.” Gritting his teeth, he forced a smile, but his rage got the better of him. “When I get down you’re dead! You’re dead!” The threat was an echo she’d heard so many times already. “Yeah,” she continued to smile, “I know.” “I am going to kill you!” he vowed again. “Not today.” She pulled the trigger.
