Download or read book A Gun and Cherries in the Bucket of Blood written by Greg Casadei and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Italian immigrants of the early 20th century experienced an inevitable, and often emotionally painful, cultural transformation after arriving in America. Worlds turned upside down. Lives changed forever. Greg Casadei captures what that process was like in this touching tale about his family's "Americanization." He also provides insights and lessons that his experiences provided along the way. The Americanization of Greg's family began with his grandparents in Sassofeltrio, Italy in the early 1900s. It ended with the January 2010 passing of his father in Tucson, Arizona. In between lies a rich story of fear and faith, hardships and overcoming, respect and toughness, risk taking and rewards, family and friends, love and togetherness, separation and crumbled foundations, death and despair, and the gradual unraveling of a once tight-knit family. Through historical facts, anecdotes and humor, Greg provides a vivid picture of what it was like growing up in an Italian family in America. You'll laugh, cry and want more as Greg recounts stories about colorful family members and their lives in Sassofeltrio, Oakwood, Michigan, and Tucson, Arizona. After turning the last page, you'll understand why the Americanization of Greg's family was so painful, but why he wouldn't have traded the experience for anything.

Download or read book Hellbent Ces Waters Me written by Margaret Wentworth and published by Kerr Publishing. This book was released on 2018-09-01 with total page 511 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Waters family amazed and inspired their neighbour Margaret Wentworth. She'd never met a man with bigger dreams than Ces, the charismatic father, nor one from such unpromising beginnings. He'd bashed, thieved and pimped in Manchester slums, did time and migrated to Australia. There he planned an assault on some of the world of sport's most glittering prizes. Sons Dean, Guy and Troy rose to dizzying heights. Troy came close to a world title in a San Diego boxing ring. On results, Ces Waters ranks among Australia's greatest trainers and motivators. They saved doomed dogs, made winning horses out of old nags, ate no meat, drank no alcohol, never swore and focused single-mindedly on reaching the top. She co-produced a documentary, 'Rebels with a Cause', about him, and began a biography, the basis for this book. But when Ces' rival was murdered, Margaret realise the man she was writing about was a lie. To silence her, Ces threatened the biographer's life. She was trapped. His laughter, jokes, yarns and 'honesty' hid his sick obsessiveness and psychopathic ruthlessness. This manipulator operated at a level your office control freak only dreams of. 'Hellbent' is a radical biography which shows how Ces used truth and lies to gain the author's trust and cloud her eyes, and how she began to see again. Why was Ces Waters compared to Charles Manson in court? Why did he threaten his biographer's life? How did his three sons rise so high in boxing? Why was Allen Hall shot dead one night? Why was Dean Waters acquitted? Was Ces Waters a pimp? Was the Waters clan's clean living a total fraud? How did Ces Waters exercise the steely control he did?

Download or read book Away from My Mother s Watchful Eye written by Jesse A. Mayfield and published by Author House. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a coming of age story that chronicles my early years growing up in inner-city, Brooklyn, New York amidst the turbulent, racially and socially explosive 1960s. The Civil Rights Movement was in full swing and while many older Negroes supported Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his calls for peaceful protests, many young Negroes gravitated to a more militant and confrontational approach to winning freedom and equal treatment under the law for all Negroes. Young people were constantly being called upon to be down with the revolution and encouraged to hate Whitey and to fear the Police in particular who were looked upon as an occupying force within the Negro community. All of this was swirling around me as I struggled to just be a kid. I certainly didn't hate anyone and my being bussed to a White school only served to complicate things as I found myself eventually feeling trapped in my own community and walking a tightrope between two diverse cultures. Surprisingly, I found peace, friendship and acceptance in the most unlikely of places. My years in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn were both character building and life changing and laid the foundation for my becoming the man that I am today. This story is told through the eyes of a precocious and intelligent little boy and it's told with humor and love. It is my hope that while you're reading this book you will get a strong sense of the love I had for my family, my community and the new world of friendships that embraced me. Being away from my mother's watchful eye offered me a newfound freedom but it also demanded that I grow up quickly, keep my wits about me and utilize everything I'd ever learned.

Book excerpt: , The Hat. A wonderful tale about a grandfather and his grandson, this book goes back to the American Civil War and the Indian Wars, blending fiction with history to create an entertaining story that will appeal to readers both young and old. Tommy is having a vacation in his grandfather’s ranch. It is a tradition they do every summer. This time, his father is needed at work so it’s only him and his mother. He is glad to get away from school where the other children bully him and the unpleasant teachers giving him a hard time. He is having the time of his life, and not only because he gets to help around the farm. His grandfather is telling him stories. He found how interesting those stories are. Tommy can’t wait to hear all of them, as he is clearly fascinated by the characters and the events that unfold as his grandfather tell it to him. He learned about his family’s past, getting to know his ancestors from his great-great grandfather and onwards. Those stories talks about the war between the Yankees and the Southerners, the era of bounty hunting, the fight between the Whites and the Indians and the time when people settle down on farms and ranches where rustling is a common occurrence. Tommy wishes those stories need not end. His grandfather introduced him to the important people who made up their family tree, and he has this unquenchable thirst to know them all. Compelling and often humorous, The Hat sweeps the readers into an extraordinary story within a story, treating them with a taste of history and fiction that will surely capture their hearts and keep them asking for more.
