Book Design by Composition for Rapid Prototyping

Download or read book Design by Composition for Rapid Prototyping written by Michael Binnard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first glance, a book on "Design by Composition for Rapid Prototyping" may seem out of place in a series on Robotics. However, this work has a couple of strong connections to the field of robotics and the robotics community, and I am delighted to introduce it to the series. The first connection is the motivation behind Binnard's work. Michael Binnard came to Stanford after having done his Masters thesis at the M.LT. Artificial Intelligence Lab, where he designed and built small walking robots, such as Boadicea (http://www.ai.mit.eduJprojects/boadicea/).At M.LT. he observed first-hand how difficult it is to align, connect and support standard actuators, sensors, and processors in small mobile robots. Figure lea) below shows how complicated it is just to connect a simple motor to one link of a robot leg using conventional methods. Surely there had to be a better way! Shape deposition manufacturing, an emerging rapid prototyping process, offered a possible solution. Actuators, sensors, processors and other components could be embedded directly into almost arbitrary three-dimensional shapes, without any of the fasteners and couplings that complicate the design in Figure lea). The process makes it possible to construct integrated robotic mechanisms, such as the example shown in Figure 1 (b) and the additional examples found in Chapters 7 and 8 of this monograph.

Book Software Wrappers for Rapid Prototyping JAUS Based Systems

Download or read book Software Wrappers for Rapid Prototyping JAUS Based Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experiences with robots in Iraq have proven that robotic technology is useful to the warfighter but tools are needed to rapidly respond to evolving missions. This paper details a methodology for automatic generation of software wrappers using JAUS to simplify prototyping and development of robotic systems (distributed embedded and real-time system software modules). Software wrappers will allow insertion of modules into a visual prototyping environment. The wrappers will intercept module functions and bind them with functions needed to exercise the modules outside of the native environment. Automatic generation of JAUS wrappers will enhance the development environment by reducing rote work and producing consistently behaving module interfaces. The resulting methodology will provide a rapid prototyping environment for use in sensor integration, Operator Control Unit (OCU) development and autonomous vehicle control.

Book Advances in Autonomous Mini Robots

Download or read book Advances in Autonomous Mini Robots written by Ulrich Rückert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-07 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autonomous robots must carry out useful tasks all by themselves relying entirely on their own perceptions of their environment. The cognitive abilities required for autonomous action are largely independent of robot size, which makes mini robots attractive as artefacts for research, education and entertainment. Autonomous mini robots must be small enough for experimentation on a desktop or a small laboratory. They must be easy to carry and safe for interaction with humans. They must not be expensive. Mini robot designers have to work at the leading edge of technology so that their creations can carry out purposeful autonomic action under these constraints. Since 2001 researchers have met every two years for an international symposium to report on the advances achieved in Autonomous Mini Robots for Research and Edutainment (AMiRE). The AMiRE Symposium is a single track conference that offers ample opportunities for discussion and exchange of ideas. This volume contains the contributed papers of the 2011 AMiRE Symposium held from 23 to 25 May 2011 at Bielefeld University, Germany. The contributions in this volume represent the state-of-the-art of autonomous mini robots; they demonstrate what is currently technically feasible and show some of the applications for autonomous mini robots.

Book Rapid Prototyping for Robotics

Download or read book Rapid Prototyping for Robotics written by Imme Ebert-Uphoff and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid prototyping framework presented in this chapter provides fast, simple and inexpensivemethods for the design and fabrication of prototypes of robotic mechanisms. As evidenced by the examples presented above, the prototypes can be of great help togain more insight into the functionality of the mechanisms, as well as to convey theconcepts to others, especially to non-technical people. Furthermore, physical prototypescan be used to validate geometric and kinematic properties such as mechanicalinterferences, transmission characteristics, singularities and workspace. Actuated prototypes have also been successfully built and controlled. Actuated mechanisms can be used in lightweight applications or for demonstration purposes. The main limitation in such cases is the compliance and limited strength of the plasticparts, which limits the forces and torques that can be produced. Finally, several comprehensive examples have been given to illustrate how the rapidprototyping framework presented here can be used throughout the design process. Two robotic hands and a SLA machine model demonstrate a wide variety of link and jointfabrication methods, as well as the possibility of embedding sensors and actuators directlyinto mechanisms. In these examples, rapid prototyping has been used to demonstrate, validate, experimentally test (including destructive tests), modify, redesign and,in one case, support the machining of a metal prototype. 43.

Download or read book Rethinking Prototyping written by Christoph Gengnagel and published by epubli. This book was released on 2013-10-02 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design modelling has benefited from computation but in most projects to date there is still a strong division between computational design and simulation leading up to construction and the completed building that is cut off from the computational design modelling. The Design Modelling Symposium Berlin 2013 would like to challenge the participants to reflect on the possibility of computational systems that bridge design phase and occupancy of buildings. This rethinking of the designed artifact beyond its physical has had profound effects on other industries already. How does it affect architecture and engineering? At the scale of engineering and building systems new perspectives may open up by engaging built form as a continuous prototype, which can track and respond during use and serve as a real world implementation of its design model. This has been tried many times from intelligent façades to smart homes and networked grids but much of it was only technology driven and not approached from a more holistic design perspective.

Book Architectural Support for Robotics

Download or read book Architectural Support for Robotics written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of robotics software is difficult. The sheer size and complexity of these software systems, the interaction of robots with their environment including the potential need for real-time operation, and the lack of accepted standards all contribute to this situation. Due to the diverse nature of robot systems, contributions from multiple researchers with disparate fields of expertise are required and that in itself further complicates software development. At Defence R & D Canada Suffield, we have developed domain-specifc middleware based upon the Miro framework, that uses the ACE/TAO implementation of CORBA. This middleware provides infrastructure services enabling seamless communication between software components. Using this framework enables researchers to focus their attention at a level of abstraction close to the problem domain, for the most part ignoring the underlying details that enable a system to work. Over the past six years, researchers in Autonomous Intelligent Systems Section have developed numerous software components for an heterogeneous set of robotic platforms. A key conclusion arising from this endeavour was the recognition that components and middleware, although crucial enablers, do not of themselves fully address the difficulties associated with software reuse. Software reuse can only be realized if both the component interfaces and the underlying data structures are stable.

Book Computer aided Design Selection and Evaluation of Robots

Download or read book Computer aided Design Selection and Evaluation of Robots written by Bartholomew O. Nnaji and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1986 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choosing the correct robotic device for a given application usually involves laborious searches through manufacturers' catalogs and comparing lists of specifications. This is no easy matter as selecting between even two robots can be very difficult since many specifications are not simply quantitative measures of robot capabilities, but are often complex issues requiring some expertise in the field of robotics. In this book the author presents an expert system-based FORTRAN software called CASOR which, through an interactive query and response, will produce prototype specifications which can be used to purchase a suitable commercially available robot to perform the desired tasks. To achieve this, the author has provided CASOR with a database of commercially available robots. This database has built-in intelligence to check for feasibility and compatibility with the prototype. The output of CASOR software can also be used to provide a graphical (pictorial) display of the prototype robot on a CAD design system. Incorporated in the software is a technique which evaluates the alternatives using both quantitative and subjective factors.
