Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The highest net baryon density possible in the laboratory--up to ten times normal nuclear density--is expected in the central region of collisions of heavy nuclei (A ≈ 200) at energies near 10 GeV per nucleon. The transverse energy (E{sub T}) distribution, as well as yields of identified particles (?, K+ and protons), from 197Au + 197Au at 11.64A GeV/c are presented. Two key observations are a large degree of proton s̀̀topping, ̀̀indicating multiple scatterings of the incident nucleons, and a proportional relationship of the pion production to the number of participating nucleons. Strangeness enhancement, a proposed signature of the quark-gluon plasma, is studied via the K+/?+ ratio, which achieves the value of 21% without a strong centrality dependence. Comparisons to similar data taken with a 14.6A GeV/c beam of 28Si are made.

Book Identified Particle Transverse Momentum Distributions from AU AU Collisions at 62 4 GeV Per Nucleon Pair

This book was released on 2005 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse momentum (PT) distributions for pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons have been measured near mid-rapidity for Au+Au collisions at sNN = 62.4 GeV using the PHOBOS detector at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) in Brookhaven National Laboratory. Particle identification is performed using the PHOBOS Time-of-Flight plastic scintillator walls and specific energy loss in the multi-layer silicon Spectrometer, which is also used for track reconstruction and momentum-determination. The spectra are corrected for all detector-dependent effects, including feed-down from weak decays. At PT 3 GeV/c, protons are measured to be the dominant species of charged hadrons and scale much faster with respect to collision centrality than mesons. This behaviour at 62.4 GeV is found to be remarkably similar to that observed in Au+Au collisions at 200 GeV, an interesting observation which should serve as an important constraint on the various mechanisms which have been proposed to describe particle production over this PT range. Baryon stopping, the transport of baryon number from intial beam rapidity, is explored through the net proton (p - p) yields at mid-rapidity. These results fill a large gap between the SPS and higher RHIC energies and as such form an important set of data for comparing to models of baryon transport mechanisms.

This book was released on 2003 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identified mid-rapidity particle spectra of [pi]{sup ±}, K{sup ±}, and p({bar p}) from 200 GeV p+p and d+Au collisions are reported. A time-of-flight detector based on multi-gap resistive plate chamber technology is used for particle identification. The particle-species dependence of the Cronin effect is observed to be significantly smaller than that at lower energies. The ratio of the nuclear modification factor (R{sub dAu}) between (p+ {bar p}) and charged hadrons (h) in the transverse momentum range 1.2

Book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002

Download or read book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002 written by S. Bentvelsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first precision measurements on CP violation in the B system are reported. Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meantto whet the appetite for further reading.

Book Study of Baryon Stopping Pion and Proton Production from 4 9 GeV Al Au Fixed target Collisions at STAR

This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the goals of the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) Beam Energy Scan program is to explore whether signatures of the quark-gluon plasma can be turned off, search for a potential Quantum-Chromodynamic (QCD) critical point, as well as identify the phase transition between hadronic and partonic matter. This program ran from the years 2010 through 2014 and certain observables such as the directed flow of protons and higher moments of net-protons show features that may suggest some sort of transition to hadron-dominated matter below 20 GeV. The Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) Fixed-Target program was created to extend center of mass energies below [square root sNN]= 7.7 GeV, down to [square root sNN]= 3.0 GeV, as these energies are not practical to do with colliding beams at RHIC. This will be crucial in the second phase of the Beam Energy Scan program, BES-II, as data from energies within this range may yield information of the phase transition. The capabilities of reconstructing interactions with a fixed-target geometry needed to be demonstrated for the future of the program in BES-II. In 2015, two test runs with a fixed-target geometry were done with the STAR detector; the first was Au + Au at [square root sNN] = 4.5 GeV and the second, a month later, was Al + Au at [square root sNN] = 4.9 GeV center-of-mass energy. This dissertation focuses on the asymmetric Al + Au collisions but will involve mentions of the Au + Au run. In this work, the spectra and rapidity density of [pi]− and p are measured at the top 0-5%, 5-10%, 10-15%, 15-20%, 20-25%, and 25-30% most central collisions. In addition, the "stopping" for protons will be discussed.

Book Backward Emission of Protons in Au Au Collisions at 11 7 A GeV c

Download or read book Backward Emission of Protons in Au Au Collisions at 11 7 A GeV c written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present preliminary results for the emission of target rapidity protons in minimum bias and central 11.7 A. GeV/c Au+Au collisions. The data span the pseudo-rapidity range [vert-bar][eta][vert-bar] [le] 0.76 and proton kinetic energy range of 50 [le] E [le] 200 MeV. The slopes of the kinetic energy spectra and dN/d[eta] values for central and minimum bias collisions are strikingly similar. Comparison of the results to results for Si+Au and p+A shows that the shape of the dN/d[eta] distribution is independent of the reaction system or centrality suggesting that the spectator matter does not play a decisive role in determining the shape of the proton distributions at back angles for these systems at AGS energies.

Book Proton Rapidity Distributions from 60 GeV

Download or read book Proton Rapidity Distributions from 60 GeV written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis of the proton rapidity distribution in central 16 O + Au collisions at 60 GeV/n measured in the NA35 streamer chamber detector at the CERN SPS is presented. The charge excess of positive particles over negative particles was measured. The rapidity distribution of the charge excess which can be associated with the primordial protons in the collision is studies in terms of the nuclear stopping power and is compared to the predictions of various models. 7 refs., 2 figs.
