Book Relationships Between Whale Hunting Human Social Organization and Subsistence Economies in Coastal Areas of Northwest Alaska During Late Prehistoric Times

Download or read book Relationships Between Whale Hunting Human Social Organization and Subsistence Economies in Coastal Areas of Northwest Alaska During Late Prehistoric Times written by R. K. Harritt and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The florescence of Eskimo whaling on northwest Alaskan coasts during Western Thule times, A.D. 1000-1400, was followed by a shift to a more balanced subsistence pattern for human inhabitants of many coastal areas during Kotzebue Period times, from A.D. 1400-1900. The cause of this shift has been identified as a change in the migration routes of whales passing through Bering Strait which presented a circumstance prohibitive to effective whale hunting. Previous interpretations of social organization of the large whaling villages of the earlier portion of this period have suggested that whale hunting provided a basis for development of social ranking of village inhabitants with the umealik, or whaling captain, assuming the role of a chief Concomitant explanations for the later, more diffuse settlement pattern encountered by early European explorers have not been previously presented. An alternative position presented here is that prehistoric Eskimo societies retained many egalitarian tenets throughout late prehistoric times. This social pattern provided flexibility in subsistence economies with nuclear families as the basic unit transferable from one permanent village to the next, and as a segment of society capable of effectively exploiting sparsely distributed seasonal resource.

Book Indigenous Ways to the Present

Download or read book Indigenous Ways to the Present written by Canadian Circumpolar Institute and published by Canadian Circumpolar Institute. This book was released on 2003 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional pursuit of whales by Eskimo hunters remains an area in which humans articulate directly with natural processes. This volume traces regional Native whaling practices from approximately 2,000 years to the present. Contributions center on three themes: variations in whaling, Yupik and Inupiat whaling traditions over time, and interactions with changing environmental conditions that include major climatic episodes as well as shorter fluctuations. Western Arctic Native whaling has never been a uniform practice. By calling attention to local, flexible adaptations, this volume distinguishes between common approaches and how societies lived in real time and space.

Book The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Hunters and Gatherers

Download or read book The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Hunters and Gatherers written by Richard B. Lee and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-12-16 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hunting and gathering is humanity's first and most successful adaptation. Until 12,000 years ago, all humanity lived this way. Surprisingly, in an increasingly urbanized and technological world dozens of hunting and gathering societies have persisted and thrive worldwide, resilient in the face of change, their ancient ways now combined with the trappings of modernity. The Encyclopedia is divided into three parts. The first contains case studies, by leading experts, of over fifty hunting and gathering peoples, in seven major world regions. There is a general introduction and an archaeological overview for each region. Part II contains thematic essays on prehistory, social life, gender, music and art, health, religion, and indigenous knowledge. The final part surveys the complex histories of hunter-gatherers' encounters with colonialism and the state, and their ongoing struggles for dignity and human rights as part of the worldwide movement of indigenous peoples.

Book The Foragers of Point Hope

Download or read book The Foragers of Point Hope written by Charles E. Hilton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the edge of the Arctic Ocean, above the Arctic Circle, the prehistoric settlements at Point Hope, Alaska, represent a truly remarkable accomplishment in human biological and cultural adaptations. Presenting a set of anthropological analyses on the human skeletal remains and cultural material from the Ipiutak and Tigara archaeological sites, The Foragers of Point Hope sheds new light on the excavations from 1939–41, which provided one of the largest sets of combined biological and cultural materials of northern latitude peoples in the world. A range of material items indicated successful human foraging strategies in this harsh Arctic environment. They also yielded enigmatic artifacts indicative of complex human cultural life filled with dense ritual and artistic expression. These remnants of past human activity contribute to a crucial understanding of past foraging lifeways and offer important insights into the human condition at the extreme edges of the globe.
