Book The Old Protestantism and the New

Download or read book The Old Protestantism and the New written by Brian Gerrish and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2004-07-09 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is B. A. Gerrish's contention, in his overview of Protestant ideas gathered together over a number of years, that the significance of Protestant ideas cannot be appraised historically if Luther is made the sole point of reference or if the Reformation is treated as something other than a critical moment in a larger historical development to which liberal Protestantism also belongs. Nor, he maintains, can ideas and doctrines be understood in abstraction from the religious experience they express. The Old Protestantism and the New, therefore, redresses the present imbalance in historical studies of Protestantism by raising questions about the intellectual heritage of the Reformers in the modern world. Gerrish's approach is shaped by three dominant interests: Luther's relation to other Reformers, especially Calvin; the relationship between classical and liberal Protestant thought; and the patterns of religious experience behind theological formulas. The originality of the individual chapters, which are written for historians as well as specialists in religious thought, is enhanced by the way in which the book as a whole brings together pivotal thinkers, including Erasmus, Schleiermacher and Barth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Novelty of Popery: And the Antiquity of the Religion of Protestants, Proved by Scripture and History "Where was the Protestant religion before Luther?" is a question that has often been asked with an air of confidence and triumph, by the advocates of a church which claims to be the only infallible expounder of the word of God. The object of the following essay is to answer this question, and to retort the charge of novelty in religion, on those who make such arrogant claims for the antiquity of their church. The importance of the question will be evident to every one who considers, that it relates not merely to some unessential doctrines, or external observances, but to the very foundation of a sinner's hope. If the Popish system be true, Protestants are left to the "uncovenanted mercies of God;" without a ministry, without sacraments, without hope! If it is false, how awful is the delusion, and how imminent the danger of those who rest all their hopes of salvation upon it! That the discussion is seasonable, must be apparent to all who are awake to the signs of the times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Keen to learn but short on time? Get to grips with the history of the Protestant Reformation in next to no time with this concise guide. 50Minutes.com provides a clear and engaging analysis of the Protestant Reformation, which began in 1517 with the publication of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses. The rest of the 16th century was defined by the resulting religious schism, which pitted the Catholic Church against an ever-growing movement that demanded far-reaching reforms in almost every area of religious life. Several heads of state converted to Protestantism, bolstering the movement, including Henry VIII, who founded the Anglican Church in 1534. However, the Reformation was also beset by internal dissent, and it quickly splintered into a number of different factions, most notably with the rise of Calvinism in Geneva. Even so, its greatest rival remained the Catholic Church, and the next two centuries were characterised by a series of religious conflicts, wars and massacres which lasted until the emergence of tolerance and secularism during the Age of Enlightenment. In just 50 minutes you will: • Discover the Catholic practices that the Reformation sought to abolish • Learn about the differing beliefs of the most prominent leaders of the Reformation • Understand the conflicts that broke out across Europe in the wake of this religious upheaval ABOUT 50MINUTES.COM | History & Culture 50MINUTES.COM will enable you to quickly understand the main events, people, conflicts and discoveries from world history that have shaped the world we live in today.
