Book India and the Indianness of Christianity

Download or read book India and the Indianness of Christianity written by Robert Eric Frykenberg and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honoring historian Robert Eric Frykenberg--arguably the historian most responsible for promoting studies of intercultural and interreligious interactions in the South Asian context--the essays in this collection avoid the pitfall of Eurocentric, top-down historiographies and instead adopt and adapt Frykenberg's own Eurocentric, bottom-up approach, this accentuating indigenous agency in the emergence of Christianity an as Indian religion. The book features first-time case studies on Christianity in a variety of unusual Indian settings, including tribal societies, and offers original contributions to an understanding of how Indian Christianity was perceived in the post-Independence period by India's governing elite. Several essayists draw heavily on rare archival documentation in the United Kingdom, Germany, and India. The wealth of material and the perspectives gathered here constitute a remarkable volume--a credit to the historian who inspired it--from back cover.

Download or read book Politicisation of Caste Relations in a Princely State written by Shaji A and published by Zorba Books. This book was released on 2017-12-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politicisation of Caste Relations in a Princely State: Communal Politics in Modern Travencore (1891-1947) Among the various factors that contributed for the progressive transformation of Kerala into a modern democratic society, politicization of caste played a very crucial role. Travancore which formed part of present day Kerala before integration witnessed socio-political movements in the modern period initiated by the principal communities. The net result of these movements was the transformation of pyramidal social structure into pillar social structure. It was achieved through incessant conflicts and assertions and from the position of caste victims some communities could elevate themselves to the makers of their own destinies. They transformed the society from change resistant sacred outlook to change ready secular outlook. The shift of this change was from caste hierarchical structure to inter-personal relations. In Modern Travancore social movement through protest aimed not only social change but also change in political sphere. The caste played a crucial role in the transformation of traditional society into modern society. In the traditional society the status of an individual was fixed. Children learn to act according to the established norms and deviations are punished. But with the influence of modern ideas the younger generations tend to become dissatisfied with the traditional society and readily accepted the new values. These values reflected the caste relations as well. In the changed situation the dominant caste groups played a catalytic role in social change. S.N.D.P and the Sree Narayana movement was a typical movement which experimented all these way of struggle. Political participation of the community can be seen in the movements like Malayali memorial agitation, Ezhava memorial, Civic Rights movement, Nivarthana agitation and struggle for responsible government. Conversion movement was effectively executed through actual conversion and the threat of conversion. The present work aims to unravel the phases of transformation of Modern Travancore into a democratic society through the politicization of caste relations.

Book In the Shadow of the Mahatma

Download or read book In the Shadow of the Mahatma written by Susan Billington Harper and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-04 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a biography of Vedanayagam Samuel Azariah (1874-1945), bishop of the Anglican Church in India from 1912 until his death in 1945. His life sheds new light on the challenges and opportunities faced by religious minorities throughout the world today. As a Christian leader in a non-Christian culture, he negotiated complex cultural, social, political, and economic pressure with exceptional skill and diplomacy. As the first Indian bishop of an Anglican diocese, and as modern India's most successful leader of depressed class and non-Brahmin conversion movements to Christianity, Azariah was equally at home with the untouchables of rural India and the unreachables of the British Empire. From this platform Azariah inevitably came into contact - and, ironically, also into conflict - with the dominating presence of Mahatma Gandhi. Susan Billington Harper here reconstructs major events and issues of Azariah's public life, including a previously unstudied controversy with Gandhi over the issue of conversion and relgious freedom in the 1930s. Based on hitherto untapped primary sources, including diocesan records and vernacular oral histories expressed in both stories and songs, this fascinating volume not only provides the first critical study of Bishop Azariah's life but also offers important - at times challenging - insights for those interested in modern India and the place of Christianity within it.

Book The Problem with Interreligious Dialogue

Download or read book The Problem with Interreligious Dialogue written by Muthuraj Swamy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-24 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muthuraj Swamy provides a fresh perspective on the world religions paradigm and 'interreligious dialogue'. By challenging the assumption that 'world religions' operate as essential entities separate from the lived experiences of practitioners, he shows that interreligious dialogue is in turn problematic as it is built on this very paradigm, and on the myth of religious conflict. Offering a critique of the idea of 'dialogue' as it has been advanced by its proponents such as religious leaders and theologians whose aims are to promote inter-religious conversation and understanding, the author argues that this approach is 'elitist' and that in reality, people do not make sharp distinctions between religions, nor do they separate political, economic, social and cultural beliefs and practices from their religious traditions. Case studies from villages in southern India explore how Hindu, Muslim and Christian communities interact in numerous ways that break the neat categories often used to describe each religion. Swamy argues that those who promote dialogue are ostensibly attempting to overcome the separate identities of religious practitioners through understanding, but in fact, they re-enforce them by encouraging a false sense of separation. The Problem with Interreligious Dialogue: Plurality, Conflict and Elitism in Hindu-Christian-Muslim Relations provides an innovative approach to a central issue confronting Religious Studies, combining both theory and ethnography.
