Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tradition of Rocky Mountain geology remains strong at all scales, spatially and temporally. Spatially, this volume discusses theories of continental mountain building events in tandem with microscopic observations and parts per billion trace element concentrations. Temporally, the volume covers geologic history from the Precambrian to modern issues of climate change and energy, groundwater contamination, geologic hazards, and landscape evolution.

Book Paleoproterozoic History of the Rocky Mountains

Download or read book Paleoproterozoic History of the Rocky Mountains written by Bart T. Cubrich and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study contains new geochronology, structural geology, microstructural geology, and geologic mapping for the following shear zones and mylonites. I present new structural geology and geochronology from Wyoming for the Johnson Ranch Quadrangle and Virginia Dale Quadrangle, and for Colorado new information for the Kings Canyon mylonite, Skin Gulch shear zone (SGSZ), Soda Creek-Fish Creek shear zone (SCFCSZ), Idaho Springs-Ralston Creek shear zone (ISRCSZ), Homestake shear zone (HSSZ), and Five Points shear zone (FPSZ). My new kinematically linked geochronology corroborates previous studies that suggested a north to south younging of accretion fronts during the Proterozoic, starting with the 1.78 Ga Medicine Bow orogeny along the Cheyenne belt in Wyoming and progressing to the south. I also report abundant new evidence of the reactivation of old accretionary sutures and formation of new shear zones from 1.68–1.58 Ga (referred to as ca. 1.6 Ga herein). Of note, these new data show that the Soda Creek-Fish Creek shear zone was formed at 1.68 Ga, and does not represent 1.78 Ga accretion front in its modern orientation. I interpret the pattern of progressive younging from south to north of these 1.6 Ga shear zones to reflect progressive foreland deformation in a piggyback style structure during regional shortening, possibly driven by accretion of arc terrains 1500 km to the south of these Colorado shear zones at ca. 1.6 Ga.

Book Field Trips in the Southern Rocky Mountains USA

Download or read book Field Trips in the Southern Rocky Mountains USA written by Eric P. Nelson and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2004-06-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of the 2004 GSA Annual Meeting and Exposition, “Geoscience in a Changing World,” covers both new and traditional areas of the earth sciences. The Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and the High Plains preserve an outstanding record of geological processes from Precambrian through Quaternary times, and thus serve as excellent educational exhibits for the meeting. With energy and mineral resources, geological hazards, water issues, geoarchaeological sites, and famous dinosaur fossil sites, the Front Range and adjacent High Plains region provide ample opportunities for field trips focusing on our changing world. The chapters in this field guide all contain technical content as well as a field trip log describing field trip routes and stops. Of the 25 field trips offered at the Meeting, 14 are described in this guidebook, covering a wide variety of geoscience disciplines, with chapters on tectonics (Precambrian and Laramide), stratigraphy and paleoenvironments (e.g., early Paleozoic environments, Jurassic eolian environments, the K-T boundary, the famous Oligocene Florissant fossil beds), economic deposits (coal and molybdenum), geological hazards, and geoarchaeology.
