Book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel written by John D. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Highway engineers have for years been faced with the problem of selecting suitable materials and methods for painting steel bridge members. The need for documented evidence of performance under known conditions (vs) opinions and advertising claims is becoming increasingly important in view of rising labor and material costs, new developments in steel products and coatings, emphasis on safety and aesthetic considerations and the large number of structural steel members requiring protection, both in bridges and other appurtenances that are being incorporated into Interstate and other multi-lane highway facilities. In view of the needs and requirements for painting steel bridge members, this literature survey covers preferred paint systems including surface preparation, pretreatment, application methods, environmental exposure conditions, costs and economics, inspections and will be of value to highway administrators and engineers.

Book Maintenance Issues and Alternate Corrosion Protection Methods for Exposed Bridge Steel

Download or read book Maintenance Issues and Alternate Corrosion Protection Methods for Exposed Bridge Steel written by Tom W. Neal and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state department of transportation (DOT) bridge maintenance engineers, coating specialists, chemists, and researchers. Manufacturers and suppliers of corrosion protection products and systems for exposed structural steel on existing bridges will also find it of interest. This synthesis describes current practice regarding maintenance and protection strategies for exposed structural steel on existing bridges. NCHRP Synthesis 251, Lead-Based Paint Removal for Steel Highway Bridges ( 1997), provides a complementary and more in-depth treatment of maintenance issues involving lead-based paint removal. This report of the Transportation Research Board defines the maintenance management systems and decision making criteria used by transportation agencies for maintaining exposed bridge steel. Material selection criteria, surface preparation and application practices, quality control and quality assurance programs, and funding mechanisms are discussed in detail. The impact of recent and proposed environmental and worker protection regulations on current practice is reported. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying state transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search. Responses to the survey, Appendix C to this document, are published on the Internet as NCHRP Web Document 11.

Book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Highway Structural Steel written by John D. Keane and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A current state-of-the-art survey is presented with regard to painting of highway structural steel. A thorough literature review was conducted and an inspection and evaluation made of more than 4,000 paint exposure tests. Paint film thickness measurement studies were made. Specific recommendations are given for selecting typical paint systems on the basis of six environmental zones, which represent the range of severity of environment in which highway steel structures are located in the United States. Model specifications are suggested for surface preparation, application, material procurement, and paint system.

Book Protective Coatings for Bridge Steel

Download or read book Protective Coatings for Bridge Steel written by Clive H. Hare and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 1987 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to bridge designers, materials engineers, maintenance engineers, and others concerned with coating systems used to protect bridge steel from corrosion. Information is presented on the causes of steel corrosion and the types of surface preparation and coatings used to protect the steel. Steel bridges need some type of protective coating to keep them from corroding. This report of the Transportation Research Board explains the mechanisms of steel corrosion and how coatings protect the steel, discusses the need for and types of surface preparation, and describes twenty types of available coating systems under three general categories: inhibitive systems, zinc-rich (sacrificial) systems, and barrier systems.

Book Coating and Corrosion Costs of Highway Structural Steel Report

Download or read book Coating and Corrosion Costs of Highway Structural Steel Report written by S. Frondistou-Yannas and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data have been collected and analyzed on the rates of deterioration and the repainting costs for structures with various coatings in four exposure environments. A simulation computer model has been built to analyze and predict corrosion and maintenance costs. This model can be used to derive the optimal painting schedule for a specific coating, the optimal protection method for a specific bridge, or a detailed analysis of costs for a single painting job or an entire maintenance program. Preprogrammed or user-furnished data may be utilized.
