Book A Comparison of the Liquid Penetration Test with Other Chemical Resistance Tests and Its Application in Determining the Performance of Protective Clothing

Download or read book A Comparison of the Liquid Penetration Test with Other Chemical Resistance Tests and Its Application in Determining the Performance of Protective Clothing written by TC. Greimel and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ASTM F903, the standard method for measuring the resistance of protective clothing materials to penetration by liquid chemicals, was first introduced in 1987. Since this time, extensive experience has been gained with its use and the application of penetration resistance data. The method involves placing a material in a test cell which allows one-sided contact of the specimen with a liquid chemical. In its newest revision, the length of exposure and pressure applied behind the chemical may be chosen by the laboratory and can impact test results. Penetration is detected visually but may be enhanced by a number of techniques. Interpreting penetration results requires an understanding of ways different material specimens may fail. Test specimens other than flat materials may be accommodated within the test cell using special gaskets or sealing methods. Penetration resistance data is not widely used by the chemical protective clothing industry. Most clothing manufacturers choose to report permeation resistance data for their products. However, the choice of permeation versus penetration testing is dependent on the type of protection desired and the relative hazards of the environment. Penetration testing offers a viable means of demonstrating protective clothing material barrier performance against liquids and as such is suited as the appropriate chemical resistance test for liquid splash-protective clothing.

Book Smart Textiles for Protection

Download or read book Smart Textiles for Protection written by R Chapman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Smart textiles are materials and structures that sense and react to environmental conditions or stimuli, and their integration into protective clothing has led to the development of products with greatly enhanced protective capabilities in hazardous situations. Smart textiles for protection provides a comprehensive analysis of smart materials used in producing protective textiles, and explores a wide range of end-use protective applications.Part one reviews smart materials and technologies. Beginning with an overview of smart textiles for protection, this section goes on to discuss types of materials, surface treatments and the use of nanofibres and smart barrier membranes. The application of sensors, actuators and computer systems in smart protective textiles is explored, followed by a review of biomimetic approaches to design. Part two investigates specific applications of smart textiles for protection. Smart technology for personal protective equipment and clothing, smart protective textiles for older people and smart high-performance textiles for protection in construction and geotechnical applications are all discussed in depth, as is the use of smart textiles in the protection of armoured vehicles and in protective clothing for fire fighters and first responders. The final chapter describes recent advances in chemical and biological protective clothing. With its distinguished editor and international team of expert contributors, Smart textiles for protection is an essential guide for all those involved in the design, development and application of protective smart textiles. - Provides a comprehensive analysis of smart materials used in producing protective textiles, and explores a wide range of end-use protective applications - Discusses types of materials, surface treatments and the use of nanofibres and smart barrier membranes as well as the application of sensors, actuators and computer systems in smart protective textiles - Investigates specific applications of smart textiles for protection, including smart high-performance textiles for protection in construction and geotechnical applications

Book Protective Armor Engineering Design

Download or read book Protective Armor Engineering Design written by Magdi El Messiry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing interest in the area of protective vests, either for protection against bullets or protection from the most realistic threats within domestic frontline operations: edged weapon, knives, and medical needles. This volume addresses that need. This new book provides an in-depth survey of the state-of-the-art research and practical techniques in the area of protected fabrics, especially stab-resistant and bulletproof fabrics. The book covers: • The history of protective armor: the long history of the art of protective armor manufacturing. • Materials used for body armor: the design and materials used for soft armor to increase its perforation-resistance utilizing high-performance fibers. • Anti-stab and anti-bullet armor design: the different design parameters required for the design of flexible armor in order to stop high-velocity projectiles. • The comfort of the body armor design: the flexibility, thermal resistivity, and evaporative moisture resistivity through the fabric. • Methods of testing the flexible body armors: testing the components of flexible body armor, according to the level of the protection required, such as NIJ Standards, HOSDB Body Armour Standards for UK Police, and the German SK1 Standard, among others. Written by an expert in textile composite material engineering, this volume fills an important gap in the area of protective fabric against stabbing or bullets and provides invaluable practical knowledge for body armor design.

Book Evaluation of Chemical Protective Garment Seams and Closures for Resistance to Liquid Penetration

Download or read book Evaluation of Chemical Protective Garment Seams and Closures for Resistance to Liquid Penetration written by SP. Berardinelli and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical penetration is defined as bulk flow of liquid through porous materials, closures, pinholes, seams, or imperfections in protective clothing material. The objective of this research was to evaluate bulky seams and closures for resistance to liquid penetration, using the ASTM Test for Resistance of Protective Clothing Materials to Penetration by Liquids (F 903-84). The test cell in this method is a mechanical device which costs less than USD1000. A modification of the test cell was used throughout the course of this study. The test cell and cell modification are explained in detail. Penetration of the challenge chemical was determined by visual inspection of the protective clothing material in the cell. The specimen was mounted in the test cell, then charged with a challenge liquid. The specimen was observed after 5 min at atmospheric pressure, and then after 10 min at 13.8 kPa (2 psig). The appearance of a drop of liquid indicated failure. Eight different bulky seams and closures were evaluated against several liquids by this test method. Chemical penetration data for control specimens (specimens without seams or closures), seams, and closures demonstrate the utility of this test method. Problems associated with the sealing of these bulky items into the test cell, as well as with the solutions were critically evaluated.
