Book Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields

Download or read book Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields written by Patrick Staebler and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-05-12 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone, whether they like it or not, is exposed to electromagnetic fields, most of the time, at very low levels. In this case, they are inconsequential, but they can cause adverse health effects when they become intense enough. This topic is complex and sensitive. Covering frequencies from 0 Hz to 300 GHz, Human Exposure to Electromagnetic Fields provides an overview of this vast topic. After a reminder of the concepts of electromagnetic fields, the author presents some examples of sources of radiation in daily life and in the industrial or medical sectors. The biophysical and biological effects of these fields on the human body are detailed and the exposure limits are recalled. The exposure assessment and the implementation of the appropriate regulation within companies are also covered. Technically and practically, this book is aimed at people with a scientific background, risk prevention actors, health physicians, especially occupational doctors, and equipment designers.

Book Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1997-03-18 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the electric and magnetic fields (EMF) to which people are routinely exposed cause health effects? This volume assesses the data and draws conclusions about the consequences of human exposure to EMF. The committee examines what is known about three kinds of health effects associated with EMF: cancer, primarily childhood leukemia; reproduction and development; and neurobiological effects. This book provides a detailed discussion of hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment, and risk characterization for each. Possible Health Effects of Exposure to Residential Electric and Magnetic Fields also discusses the tools available to measure exposure, common types of exposures, and what is known about the effects of exposure. The committee looks at correlations between EMF exposure and carcinogenesis, mutagenesis, neurobehavioral effects, reproductive and developmental effects, effects on melatonin and other neurochemicals, and effects on bone healing and stimulated cell growth.

Book Non ionizing Radiation Protection

Download or read book Non ionizing Radiation Protection written by Andrew W. Wood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive review of non-ionizing radiation and its public health and environmental risks, for researchers, policy makers, and laymen This book explains the characteristics of all forms of electromagnetic non-ionizing radiation (NIR) and analyzes the relationship between exposure and its biological effects, as well as the known dose-response relationships associated with each. Taking a uniquely holistic approach to the concept of health that builds upon the WHO definition to include not only absence of disease, but the physical, mental and social well-being of individuals and the population, it reviews established and potential risks and protections, along with regulatory issues associated with each. The risks to public health of NIR, whether in the form of UV light, radio waves from wireless devices, or electric and magnetic fields associated with electrical power systems, is currently a cause of great concern among members of the public and lawmakers. But in order to separate established science from speculation and make informed decisions about how to mitigate the risks of NIR and allocate precious resources, policymakers, manufacturers, and individuals need a comprehensive source of up-to-date information based on the current scientific evidence. Written by a team of experts in their fields, this book is that source. Among other things, it: Summarizes scientific findings on the safety of different forms of NIR and the rationale behind current standards Describes devices for monitoring NIR along with the established and potential hazards of each form Explores proper protections against UV light and lasers, RF radiation, ELF fields and other forms of NIR Discusses how to avoid injuries through occupational training or public awareness programs, and how to perform medical assessments in cases of suspected NIR injuries Considers how to decide whether or not to spend money on certain mitigation measures, based on cost-benefit analyses Offering expert reviews and analyses of the latest scientific findings and public policy issues concerning the risks to public health and the environment of NIR, Non-ionizing Radiation Protection is an indispensable source of information for manufacturers, government regulators, and regulatory agencies, as well as researchers, concerned laypersons, and students.

Download or read book Electromagnetic Biointeraction written by Giorgio Franceschetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book collects the revised lectures held at Capri (Italy) in the period 2-6 May, 1988 in occasion of the International Course on "Worldwide Nonionizing Radiation Safety Standards: Their Rationales and Problems". The Course was organized by IRECE (Institute for Research in Electromagnetism and Electronic Components) of CNR (Italian National Council for Research) and was directed by professors Giorgio Franceschetti and Om P. Gandhi. The idea for this course arose from the continuing wide disparity in the electromagnetic (EM) radiation safety standards worldwide, and the confusion that this has caused in the public mind. The safety guidelines in the western countries have been nearly three orders of magnitude greater than the safety levels in the Eastern European countries. Even though the former have been slightly reduced and the latter have been increased somewhat in recent years, there is still a wide gap in the EM safety standards that are used. With the ever increasing use of EM energy the public is becoming increasingly aware of and concerned about the potential biohazards of EM fields. This problem is compounded by inadequate knowledge of nonthermal mechanisms of interaction of EM fields with biological systems. The lecturers for the Course were the recognized leaders in their respective areas within the discipline of Biological Effects of Electromagnetic Fields.
