Book Industrial Innovation and Environmental Regulation

Download or read book Industrial Innovation and Environmental Regulation written by International Development Research Centre (Canada) and published by IDRC. This book was released on 2007 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role should governments play in protecting the environment and controlling the environmental impacts of industry? Do regulations benefit the environment? And how do they affect industrial innovation? Since the early 1970s, regulations have been used to coerce producers of goods and services into internalizing the environmental costs of production. These efforts have often faced opposition on practical and ideological grounds. Beginning in the 1980s, there has been a movement toward liberalization, coupled with the continued failure of the market to protect the environment as a public good. As a result, private and public sector interests have been debating the appropriate role of governments in protecting and improving the environment and controlling the environmental impact of industry. Using case studies from numerous countries, this book examines political and industrial trends and the responses to these challenges. The authors conclude that the complexities of environmental and economic relationships disallow universal solutions, and they stress the need for context-specific perspectives on the role of regulatory measures in environmental innovation.

Book Production Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management in the Chemical Industry

Download or read book Production Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management in the Chemical Industry written by Claus Christ and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-11-21 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production-integrated environmental protection is synonymous with - reducing the amount of potential pollutants at source - reducing the consumption of resources and energy - recycling and utilization of residues and used products, and therefore a topic of considerable current interest. No chemical process exists that produces only the product desired. Therefore it is an important aim of the chemical industry to reduce the environmental effects of residues of chemical processes. This can be achieved by: - optimizing processes - applying new synthesis routes - improving selectivity - replacing auxiliaries that have a harmful effect on the environment - production-integrated recovery of residues to name just a few possibilities. If you want to know more about them, have a look at Protection-Integrated Environmental Protection and Waste Management. There you will find examples from the chemical industry where modification of existing manufacturing processes or the design of new processes has led to reduction of environmental pollution. Data from companies are given who operate world-wide reflecting a multi national situation.

Book Industrial Pollution Prevention

Download or read book Industrial Pollution Prevention written by Thomas T. Shen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...This book is the best I have read on this subject of increasing importance in the past five years. Therefore, I recommend it strongly to a broad audience which is interested in and responsible for pollution prevention: students on environmental management courses, their lecturers, government administrators, industrial decision-makers and employees, consultants and members of NGOs. The honest impulse toward sustainable development underlying the work as a whole is encouraging for all of them." (Int. Journal of Environment and Pollution) "...Although this book necessarily focuses on many aspects of environmental law and industrial production in the USA, it contains much detailed information on pollution issued in the pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, electronics and commercial printing industries which will be of wider interest. It should prove useful to industrial chemists and engineers and indeed to all those with an interest in protecting our increasingly threatened environment." (Environmental Engineering)

Book Safety in the Process Industries

Book Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering

Download or read book Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering written by Gaetano Celenza and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-28 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering is a step-by-step implementation manual in three volumes, detailing the selection and design of industrial liquid and solid waste treatment systems. It consolidates all the process engineering principles required to evaluate a wide range of industrial facilities, starting with pollution prevention and source control and ending with end-of-pipe treatment technologies. Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering guides experienced engineers through the various steps of industrial liquid and solid waste treatment. The structure of the text allows a wider application to various levels of experience. By beginning each chapter with a simplified explanation of applicable theory, expanding to practical design discussions, and finishing with system Flowsheets and Case Study detail calculations, readers can "enter or leave" a section according to their specific needs. As a result, this set serves as a primer for students engaged in environmental engineering studies AND a comprehensive single-source reference for experienced engineers. Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering includes design principles applicable to municipal systems with significant industrial influents. The information presented in these volumes is basic to conventional treatment procedures, while allowing evaluation and implementation of specialized and emerging treatment technologies. What makes Industrial Waste Treatment Process Engineering unique is the level of process engineering detail. The facility evaluation section includes a step-by-step review of each major and support manufacturing operation, identifying probable contaminant discharges, practical prevention measures, and point source control procedures. This theoretical plant review is followed by procedures to conduct a site specific pollution control program. The unit operation chapters contain all the details needed to complete a treatment process design.

Book Beyond Compliance

Download or read book Beyond Compliance written by Bruce Smart and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Beyond Compliance' traces the recent experiences of a selection of companies that have publicly stated a determination to move toward environmental excellence. It shows how new products, processes, and programs - in the front office, the plant, and the community at large - grew out of a combination of community, government, stockholder, employee, and market forces. It reviews how companies set environmental goals, how they allocate responsibility for meeting them, and how they measure their success. Contributors share stories of how they took their message to the public, which carrots and sticks worked and which didn't, and how they are building on both successes and failures to plan for the future. A few also tell of efforts at industry-wide reform.
