Book A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower

Download or read book A Cooperative Strategy for 21st Century Seapower written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This strategy stresses an approach that integrates seapower with other elements of national power, as well as those of our friends and allies. It describes how seapower will be applied around the world to protect our way of life, as we join with other like-minded nations to protect and sustain the global, inter-connected system through which we prosper. Our commitment to protecting the homeland and winning our Nation's wars is matched by a corresponding commitment to preventing war. This strategy is derived from a thorough assessment of the Nation's security requirements. It does not presume conflict but instead acknowledges the historical fact that peace does not preserve itself. Looking across the wide maritime domain, it calls for a broad portfolio of core capabilities to support our vital interests, realized by well-trained, highly motivated and ably-led people. The strategy recognizes the challenges imposed by the uncertain conditions in a time of rapid change and makes the case for the necessity of U.S. seapower in the 21st Century. As a declaratory strategy, this document challenges the Sea Services to evolve an expanded range of integrated capabilities to achieve enduring national strategic objectives. Further experimentation, operational experience, and analysis are necessary, as is sea service commitment to building upon the ideas that this document puts forward. However, the Sea Services cannot do this alone. The diverse elements of the greater maritime community must be inspired and supported as they invest to secure peace and prosperity across the maritime domain.

The paradigm presented is one of ocean governance rather than of law or policy; it challenges the prevailing concept of "freedom of the seas" and calls instead for a governing notion of "freedom for the seas" where the primary goal is the protection of ecological vitality. Topics covered include: *strategies for controlling ocean pollution *regulation of high-seas fishing *defects in current deep seabed mining regulatory provisions *threats to the marine environment posed by military activities

Book Navigating the Uncertain Waters of the 21st Century

Download or read book Navigating the Uncertain Waters of the 21st Century written by Stephen E. Flynn and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America's waterways are a critical elelment of the national transportation infrastructure. Managing the safety, environmental protection, border control and security of our nation's waterways in an efficient and profitable manner is becoming a daunting task. Responding to this challenge must be done against a backdrop of extraordinary technological development, particularly in the area of radio navigation and information systems. There is a pressing need for a national and international dialog on how the revolution in navigation and information systems will affect the maritime backbone of an increasingly global economy. To promote this dialong, The Institute of Navigation (ION), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) Center for Advanced Studies sponsored a one day workshop on May 22, 1998 in Washington, D.C. ... This paper summarized the presentations from that conference and details the conference results. In addition, a plan of action that advances the institute's role in sustaining an ongoing conversation between policy-makers and technology users to ensure that our intermodal transportation system can adapt to the uncertainties of the next century is presented.

Book The Future of Work in the United States

Download or read book The Future of Work in the United States written by Natalie Rauscher and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-09-03 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents and analyzes how restructuring processes due to technological change are reflected and processed in political and public discourses in the United States in the most recent past. More specifically, this work examines how the themes of automation, digitization, and the platform economy and their impact on the future of work are reflected in public discourse through the analysis of journalistic articles, and political discourse through the analysis of congressional hearings. Public and political discourses, as well as economic narratives, shape our understanding of certain developments such as technological change, our behavior more generally, and societal support of said developments. Therefore, it is vital to investigate and analyze these discourses in order to show how technological change is perceived and evaluated today. This work draws from concepts and methods of several different disciplines, most notably using a combination of corpus-linguistic methods and exemplary textual analysis. This way, this work stands as truly interdisciplinary, with a unique approach to the quantitative and qualitative examination of discourses.

Book The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road

Download or read book The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road written by Keyuan Zou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the opportunities and challenges that both Europe and Asia face under the framework of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative. The 21st Century Maritime Silk Road Initiative (MSR Initiative), put forward by the Chinese government together with the Silk Road Economic Belt, reflects China’s ambition and vision to shape the global economic and political order. The first step and priority under the MSR Initiative, according to documents issued by China, is to build three ‘Blue Economic Passages’ linking China with the rest of the world at sea, two of which will connect China with Europe. This initiative, however, still faces enormous challenges of geopolitical suspicion and security risks. This book seeks to assess these risks and their causes for the cooperation between the Eurasian countries under the framework of MSR and puts forward suggestions to deal with these risks in the interdisciplinary perspectives of international relations and international law. Featuring a global team of contributors, this book will be of much interest to students of Asian politics, maritime security, international law and international relations.

Book Tackling Marine Debris in the 21st Century

Download or read book Tackling Marine Debris in the 21st Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-17 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine debris from ships and other ocean-based sources-including trash and lost fishing gear-contributes to the spoiling of beaches, fouling of surface waters and the seafloor, and harm to marine animals, among other effects. Unfortunately, international conventions and domestic laws intended to control marine debris have not been successful, in part because the laws, as written, provide little incentive to change behavior. This book identifies ways to reduce waste, improve waste disposal at ports, and strengthen the regulatory framework toward a goal of zero waste discharge into the marine environment. Progress will depend on a commitment to sustained funding and appropriate institutional support. The Interagency Marine Debris Coordinating Committee should, through planning and prioritization, target research to understand the sources, fates, and impacts of marine debris. It should support the establishment of scalable and statistically rigorous protocols that allow monitoring at a variety of temporal and spatial scales. These protocols should contain evaluative metrics that allow assessment of progress in marine debris mitigation. The United States, through leadership in the international arena, should provide technical assistance and support for the establishment of additional monitoring and research programs worldwide.

Book Space Strategy in the 21st Century

Download or read book Space Strategy in the 21st Century written by Eligar Sadeh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an overview of space strategy in the 21st century. The purpose of space strategy is to coordinate, integrate, and prioritize space activities across security, commercial, and civil sectors. Without strategy, space activities continue to provide value, but it becomes difficult to identify and execute long-term programs and projects and to optimize the use of space for security, economic, civil, and environmental ends. Strategy is essential for all these ends since dependence on, and use of, space is accelerating globally and space is integrated in the fabric of activities across all sectors and uses. This volume identifies a number of areas of concern pertinent to the development of national space strategy, including: intellectual foundations; political challenges; international cooperation and space governance; space assurance and political, organizational, and management aspects specific to security space strategy. The contributing authors expand their focus beyond that of the United States, and explore and analyse the international developments and implications of national space strategies of Russia, China, Europe, Japan, India, Israel, and Brazil. This book will be of much interest to students of space power and politics, strategic studies, foreign policy and International Relations in general.
