Book excerpt: After she uncovers her wealthy father's ties to a prominent Chicago crime family, twenty-four-year-old Addison St. Claire flees to a small town in Michigan where she hopes to start a new life. Things are not that simple, though, and she is quickly tracked down by a stern, handsome police detective who makes it clear that Addison will be coming with him whether she likes it or not. Detective Trevor Stringer is none too pleased at being assigned to babysit a spoiled rich girl, but he is determined to keep Addison safe, even if that means taking her over his knee for a painful, humiliating bare-bottom spanking when her defiance puts her life at risk. Despite her protests, her body's response to his bold dominance makes it obvious that Addison is in need of a firm-handed man to keep her in line, and before long she is begging Trevor to claim her properly. Over the coming days, Addison learns what it means to belong to a man who will not hesitate to strip her bare and punish her thoroughly whenever he feels it necessary. Whether she is pleading desperately for the release she has been denied after a hard spanking or writhing with pleasure more intense than she can handle as she is brought to one shattering climax after another, Addison is left with no doubt that she has been mastered completely. But when she discovers that Trevor has kept an important secret from her, will she ever be able to trust him again? Book excerpt: After her brother's life of crime is brought to a sudden end, twenty-two-year-old Kara Jennings fears she may be the next target of the men who killed him. It comes as a shock, however, when she is taken captive by a mysterious man who promises to keep her safe but quickly demonstrates that he will not hesitate to punish her in any way he sees fit if she disobeys him. Devin Stringer is certain there is something important that Kara is refusing to share with him--something related to her brother's death--and he is fully prepared to be as firm as necessary to get her to tell him the truth, even if that means stripping her bare, spanking her soundly, and keeping her caged like a pet. Despite her shame at being made to kneel naked at her captor's feet, eat from his hand, and surrender her body to him completely, Devin's dominance leaves Kara helplessly aroused and yearning for him to master her even more thoroughly. When he brings her to the edge of an intense climax only to leave her desperate and wanting, her need for him to claim her properly compels Kara to confess the secret her brother shared with her before his death. But will that information help Devin protect his beautiful pet or will it ultimately put her in greater danger? Publisher's Note: Protecting His Pet is a stand-alone book which is the first entry in the Owned and Protected series. Book Runaway College Costs

Download or read book Runaway College Costs written by James V. Koch and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-10-13 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What role have governing boards played in tuition and fee escalation at four-year public colleges and universities? In the United States, college costs, especially tuition and fees, have increased much more rapidly than either the overall Consumer Price Index or median household income. This cost inflation has effectively closed the doors of higher education to many qualified students and contributed to a staggering $1.5 trillion in student debt. Additionally, the number of college enrollments in the United States actually declined for eight straight years between 2011 and 2019, as college student bodies became increasingly stratified on the basis of family incomes. Virtually every public college cost increase, however, requires a positive vote from each university's governing board—and the record shows that these votes are nearly always unanimous. In Runaway College Costs, James V. Koch and Richard J. Cebula argue that many trustees have forgotten that they should act as fiduciaries who represent the best interests of students, parents, and taxpayers. Instead, Koch and Cebula explain, too often many trustees prize size and more prestigious rankings over access and affordability. These misplaced priorities make them vote in favor of ever more plush facilities, expensive intercollegiate athletic programs, administrative bloat, and outdated models of instruction and research. Koch and Cebula supply groundbreaking empirical evidence on the impact of governing board membership, size, and operations on tuition and fees. They show, for example, that the existence of a powerful statewide governing board exercises significant downward pressure on tuition and fees and that state funding cuts cannot explain more than one-half of the cost increases at the typical four-year public institution. The authors propose an action agenda for governing boards, including changing the incentives placed in front of campus presidents and senior administrators. Finally, they conclude that, although public university governing boards deserve blame for accelerating college cost inflation, they also are ideally situated to improve the situation. Runaway College Costs ends hopefully, suggesting that governing boards and their member trustees actually have the greatest potential to improve the situation. Providing the first rigorous empirical evidence of the impact that various modes of governance have had not only on tuition and fees but also on a half-dozen measures of institutional performance, this book will be of serious interest to governors, legislators, public university board members and their staffs, those interested in supporting the traditional goals of public higher education, and of course students and their parents, as well as taxpayers.

Book excerpt: Travel the world, change lives, save souls. (Note: Results not typical.) A young idealist heeds the call to radical obedience, gives away all of his belongings and shaking off the fetters of a complacent life, travels halfway around the world. There he discovers, among the poor and the fatherless of West Africa, that he has only surrendered to a new kind of captivity. There is no doubt that young people today are fully invested in social and human rights issues. They start their own nonprofits, they run their own charities, they raise money for worthy causes. Books on saving the world abound, topping the bestsellers’ lists, fueling the drive to prove not only commitment to the world but devotion to God. Now there is a new crop of books starting to emerge, detailing the consequences of trying to save a world that is not ours to save. But none of these books tell the story thatRunaway Radical tells; this is the first book to highlight the painful personal consequences of the new radicalism, documenting in heartbreaking detail what happens when a young person becomes entrapped instead of liberated by its call. His radical resolve now shaken, he returns home to rebuild his life and his faith. Runaway Radical serves as an important and cautionary tale for all who lead and participate in compassion activism, in the art of doing good— both overseas and at home— amidst this new culture of radical Christian service.

Book excerpt: This first book in D. E. Knobbe's gripping Runaway series puts readers in the middle of a wilderness adventure that few could survive on their own. Nate stole the kayak . . . sort of. His parents don't know where he is, and that's just fine with him. He's made it to the chain of sparsely populated islands off the coast of Vancouver, his kayaking dream come true. So what could possibly go wrong? For starters, he hadn't counted on real runaways making him feel like a fraud or on the cops chasing him into a wild and deadly storm. Nate hadn't planned to shipwreck on a deserted island either, or to have a run-in with a crazed drug smuggler, who drifted into the bay on a crippled Sailboat, ready to protect his stash with a loaded gun. Should Nate save himself or the Goth girl from Seattle who tried to rescue him? Between being chased by criminals, shot at, and almost drowned, their options aren't looking good.
