Book The Legacy of Racism for Children

Download or read book The Legacy of Racism for Children written by Margaret C. Stevenson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When children become entangled with the law, their lives can be disrupted irrevocably. When those children are underrepresented minorities, the potential for disruption is even greater. The Legacy of Racism for Children: Psychology, Law, and Public Policy examines issues that arise when minority children's lives are directly or indirectly influenced by law and public policy. Uniquely comprehensive in scope, this trailblazing volume offers cutting-edge chapters on the intersections of race/ethnicity within the context of child maltreatment, child dependency court, custody and adoption, familial incarceration, school discipline and the "school-to-prison pipeline," juvenile justice, police/youth interactions, and jurors' perceptions of child and adolescent victims and defendants. The book also includes chapters focused on troubling situations that are less commonly researched, but growing in importance, including the role of race and racism in child sex trafficking and US immigration law and policy. Thus, individual chapters explore myriad ways in which law and policy shape the lives of marginalized children and adolescents - racial and ethnic minorities - who historically and presently are at heightened risk for experiencing disadvantageous consequences of law and policy. In so doing, The Legacy of Racism for Children can help social scientists to understand and work to prevent the perpetuation of racial discrimination in American laws and public policies.

Book excerpt: An award-winning scholar exposes the foundational racism of the child welfare system and calls for radical change Many believe the child welfare system protects children from abuse. But as Torn Apart uncovers, this system is designed to punish Black families. Drawing on decades of research, legal scholar and sociologist Dorothy Roberts reveals that the child welfare system is better understood as a “family policing system” that collaborates with law enforcement and prisons to oppress Black communities. Child protection investigations ensnare a majority of Black children, putting their families under intense state surveillance and regulation. Black children are disproportionately likely to be torn from their families and placed in foster care, driving many to juvenile detention and imprisonment. The only way to stop the destruction caused by family policing, Torn Apart argues, is to abolish the child welfare system and liberate Black communities.

Book Preventing Child Maltreatment in the U S

Download or read book Preventing Child Maltreatment in the U S written by Melissa Phillips and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-16 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Child maltreatment occurs in the Black community at higher rates than any other racial group. Given the prevalence of child maltreatment risk factors in the Black community, such as being in a low-income family, single parent family, greater exposure to physical discipline, and less access to services and resources, it is not surprising but nonetheless concerning that Black children are at greater risk for abuse and/or neglect. Unearthing the cause and effect between the challenges faced by the Black community and the life outcomes for Black children is key to making positive changes happen. Through a feminist and womanist lens, the authors unpack the range of factors that intersect and impact the Black community that are necessary to address to effectively protect Black children. Understanding how to prevent maltreatment and promote health and wellness are essential to adequately address maltreatment so as to protect and empower Black children.

Book The Bully Named Racism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Andre Fields
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2018-03-17
  • ISBN : 9780692104941
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book The Bully Named Racism written by Andre Fields and published by . This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear Parent, Many mothers and fathers have hopes of their children not growing up to be racist adults. Despite this altruistic dream, most children learn to be racist at a very young age. As a parent, you may think that if you avoid talking about racism and refrain from using racial slurs in the home, your children will not grow up to be American racists. This avoidance, even with the purest of intentions, will not protect your child from the racial conditioning of the mass media and other social influences. Simply put, avoiding the "race talk" is not the cure or answer for raising a non-racist child. Why? Because children are not colorblind. They see race just as clearly as adults. With this ability to see differences in skin color comes curiosity and questioning. Because of fear, political correctness, and a host of other personality factors, many parents choose not to discuss race with their children. This lack of dialogue about the complex subjects of race and racism results in many children being left on their own to piece together the profoundly complex puzzle of American race relations. The intersection between race, American culture, and human nature is very complex. Because of this complexity, leaving a child on their own to wander the maze of American Racism can be a dangerous parenting strategy. This type of parenting approach will likely result in the young inquisitive mind coming up with problematic conclusions to their race-based questions and curiosities. Without strategic parental guidance, the reasoning capacities of the developing child can consciously and subconsciously travel down the path of prejudice and discrimination. The purpose of this book is to provide parents and teachers with a gateway or platform for having the "race talk" with their children. Essentially, this story should be viewed as a pathway to deeper communications about race and racism. Furthermore, this book serves the purpose of instilling into children the notion that all people are equal no matter the color of their skin! Some parents may wish to read this book with or to their child and answer questions along the way. Other parents may choose to allow their child to read the book on their own and then engage in discussion afterwards. There is no right or wrong approach. Whatever approach you take as a parent, just make certain you are intentional about steering your child's thoughts and feelings down the path of equality and fairness. Andre R. Fields, Ph.D.

How should you react in front of your kids if you witness or you are victim of a racist incident? If you are looking for an answer to at least one of these questions, then keep reading... In the light of recent events, many parents or adults may find themselves struggling to talk about the concepts of race, ethnicity, racism and social justice with kids. What is discussed depends on a family's makeup and the community in which they live, but it is important for everyone, independently of ethnicity and belonging to start having 'the conversation' and start learning some tricks and ideas on how to behave when confronted with racist situation and/or people. Why do we need to talk about racism and social justice to kids? How to start a conversation about racism with kids? How does racism affect health and well-being in children? ............................So, where do I start?................................. You can start to educate yourself about the root of prejudice, identity formation, race and racism with this book. This will allow you not to feel uncomfortable or feel you lack knowledge and understanding about the topic when you face children's concerns and questions about diversity. This book covers the following topics: ✓ Making sense of the world ✓ Who am I? ✓ What is anti-racism? ✓ What is social justice? ✓ Kids reaction to diversity ✓ Help children about their curiosity and questions ✓ How to raise anti-racism and social justice children ...And much more Adults' discomfort with the topic can be a barrier to these conversations on discussing race with children. "All parents need to help their children think and talk about our country's racial inequality as a step toward creating a more equal society". By reading this book, you will gain a better understanding of the topic and be able to talk to your children about racism, social justice, and the struggles for human and civil rights for all people. You will know much more about your child developmental stages and act on them accordingly. Furthermore, you and your children will be able to put into practices some tips and tricks to deal with embarrassing and confrontational situations that can happen in everyday life. Explanation of these concepts directly may be complex and difficult, but the introduction of these concepts in the educational process and finding appropriate methods for the child's age to communicate these ideas is what is valuable. Protecting children from being exposed to racism by constantly opening their lines of communication with them about what they might be exposed to in their different places of activity, making sure to communicate with other children's families to support and promote the rejection of racism, and contacting the school to consult about what children are exposed to. It is also essential for children to understand the long march of the struggle against racism to make the world a better place for future generations.

Book Confronting the Racist Legacy of the American Child Welfare System

Download or read book Confronting the Racist Legacy of the American Child Welfare System written by Alan J. Dettlaff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The forcible separation of Black children from their parents was first used as a means of controlling Black families in the United States over 400 years ago as a practice of human chattel slavery. This practice of forcibly and involuntary separating Black children from their families was used by the state as a means of maintaining power and control by a system of White supremacy that is foundational to this country's origins. This foundation was firmly established hundreds of years earlier through the philosophy of settler colonialism upon which the United States began. This philosophy required both the removal and dispossession of the Indigenous population from their land, which included the separation of children from their families, and the importation of forced labor to work in and profit from the land. The philosophy of settler colonialism also firmly established the White settler, and thus Whiteness, as the normalized identity of those who would become citizens of the United States-with all others established as the "Other," disposable and exploitable, whether indigenous or enslaved. This legacy of violence and exploitation that began through settler colonialism and continued through human chattel slavery laid the foundation for the violence and exploitation that occurs today through the modern child welfare system"--
