Book excerpt: "If the caribou die, then we die." These few words speak eloquently to the significanceof caribou for northern peoples. They were spoken not by a wise old chief, but by a 13-year-old Dene youth in 2007 during a hearing regarding uranium exploration on the caribou wintering grounds. Right now there is urgent, widespread concern about the future of the most centralof species: caribou. Caribou and the North brings both the facts and the feelingsof the current situation to a North American readership. The writers look at why we need to conserve the caribou, the threats that have faced caribou in the past, present, and future, and the actions that we can take. Also included is an appendixwith up-to-date information on the range, movements, habitats, numbers, population trends, and key threats to caribou in North America.

Book I Will Live for Both of Us

Download or read book I Will Live for Both of Us written by Joan Scottie and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born at a traditional Inuit camp in what is now Nunavut, Joan Scottie has spent decades protecting the Inuit hunting way of life, most famously with her long battle against the uranium mining industry. Twice, Scottie and her community of Baker Lake successfully stopped a proposed uranium mine. Working with geographer Warren Bernauer and social scientist Jack Hicks, Scottie here tells the history of her community’s decades-long fight against uranium mining. Scottie's I Will Live for Both of Us is a reflection on recent political and environmental history and a call for a future in which Inuit traditional laws and values are respected and upheld. Drawing on Scottie’s rich and storied life, together with document research by Bernauer and Hicks, their book brings the perspective of a hunter, Elder, grandmother, and community organizer to bear on important political developments and conflicts in the Canadian Arctic since the Second World War. In addition to telling the story of her community’s struggle against the uranium industry, I Will Live for Both of Us discusses gender relations in traditional Inuit camps, the emotional dimensions of colonial oppression, Inuit experiences with residential schools, the politics of gold mining, and Inuit traditional laws regarding the land and animals. A collaboration between three committed activists, I Will Live for Both of Us provides key insights into Inuit history, Indigenous politics, resource management, and the nuclear industry.

Book Surveys of the Beverly Caribou Calving Grounds 1957 94

Download or read book Surveys of the Beverly Caribou Calving Grounds 1957 94 written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calving grounds of the Beverly caribou herd in the Northwest Territories have been delineated over the 23 years between 1957 and 1994 by the Canadian Wildlife Service and the Northwest Territories Department of Resources, Wildlife & Economic Development, and during monitoring for the Caribou Protection Measures. Survey design, criteria for defining the calving ground, timing & coverage of surveys, and weather conditions have varied from year to year. This report maps the Beverly caribou herd's traditional calving grounds from information in the 1957-94 surveys, compiles flight lines & survey strata for each annual calving ground survey into one report, and determines how frequently the Caribou Protection Area covered the annual calving grounds. It also discusses the technical & environmental sources of uncertainty that influence the mapping of the calving grounds.

Book Calving Ground Habitat Selection

Download or read book Calving Ground Habitat Selection written by Rebecca A. Kelleyhouse and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus granti) exhibit relative fidelity to calving grounds each spring. The Western Arctic Herd (WAH) and Teshekpuk Lake Herd (TLH) calve separately on Alaska's north slope, each selective of the dominant vegetation type. The WAH consumed mostly sedges, though the TLH diet varied. Despite differing snow conditions between the calving grounds, both herds were selective of the lowest snow cover class. Rugged terrain was avoided by both herds. While the TLH selected a high rate of increase in biomass, the WAH selected high biomass at calving and at peak lactation. Climate trends (1985-2001) were variable. There was a warming trend on the WAH calving ground, though no significant trends were present on the TLH calving ground, as expressed by median NDVI on 21 June. These herds have similar winter ranges and population trends, yet they differ in respect to habitat composition, selection and climate patterns during calving"--Leave iv.

Download or read book Beverly and Kaminuriak Caribou Monitoring and Land Use Controls 1989 written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents findings related to the distribution, relative abundance, and movements of the cow and cow/calf segments of the Beverly & Kaminuriak caribou populations in the Northwest Territories. The caribou were monitored via aerial surveys from May to July 1989 flown over Caribou Protection Areas, designated water crossings, areas of known caribou activity, land use permit sites, claim areas, and other areas of mineral interest. The surveys were intended to provide information to land use inspectors who enforced the 1989 Caribou Protection Measures. Results are presented & discussed regarding spring migration activity, calving areas, post-calving movements, caribou presence near land use activities, and caribou movement at water crossings.
