Download or read book Disease Control Priorities Third Edition Volume 2 written by Robert Black and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2016-04-11 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of reproductive, maternal, newborn, and child health (RMNCH) by the Disease Control Priorities, Third Edition (DCP3) focuses on maternal conditions, childhood illness, and malnutrition. Specifically, the chapters address acute illness and undernutrition in children, principally under age 5. It also covers maternal mortality, morbidity, stillbirth, and influences to pregnancy and pre-pregnancy. Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.
Download or read book From Neurons to Neighborhoods written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-11-13 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we raise young children is one of today's most highly personalized and sharply politicized issues, in part because each of us can claim some level of "expertise." The debate has intensified as discoveries about our development-in the womb and in the first months and years-have reached the popular media. How can we use our burgeoning knowledge to assure the well-being of all young children, for their own sake as well as for the sake of our nation? Drawing from new findings, this book presents important conclusions about nature-versus-nurture, the impact of being born into a working family, the effect of politics on programs for children, the costs and benefits of intervention, and other issues. The committee issues a series of challenges to decision makers regarding the quality of child care, issues of racial and ethnic diversity, the integration of children's cognitive and emotional development, and more. Authoritative yet accessible, From Neurons to Neighborhoods presents the evidence about "brain wiring" and how kids learn to speak, think, and regulate their behavior. It examines the effect of the climate-family, child care, community-within which the child grows.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By all indicators, the reproductive health of Americans has been deteriorating since 1980. Our nation is troubled by rates of teen pregnancies and newborn deaths that are worse than almost all others in the Western world. Science and Babies is a straightforward presentation of the major reproductive issues we face that suggests answers for the public. The book discusses how the clash of opinions on sex and family planning prevents us from making a national commitment to reproductive health; why people in the United States have fewer contraceptive choices than those in many other countries; what we need to do to improve social and medical services for teens and people living in poverty; how couples should "shop" for a fertility service and make consumer-wise decisions; and what we can expect in the futureâ€"featuring interesting accounts of potential scientific advances.

Book excerpt: From two of the world’s top scientists and one of the world’s top science writers (all parents), Dirt Is Good is a q&a-based guide to everything you need to know about kids & germs. “Is it OK for my child to eat dirt?” That’s just one of the many questions authors Jack Gilbert and Rob Knight are bombarded with every week from parents all over the world. They've heard everything from “My two-year-old gets constant ear infections. Should I give her antibiotics? Or probiotics?” to “I heard that my son’s asthma was caused by a lack of microbial exposure. Is this true, and if so what can I do about it now?” Google these questions, and you’ll be overwhelmed with answers. The internet is rife with speculation and misinformation about the risks and benefits of what most parents think of as simply germs, but which scientists now call the microbiome: the combined activity of all the tiny organisms inside our bodies and the surrounding environment that have an enormous impact on our health and well-being. Who better to turn to for answers than Drs. Gilbert and Knight, two of the top scientists leading the investigation into the microbiome—an investigation that is producing fascinating discoveries and bringing answers to parents who want to do the best for their young children. Download or read book The Babysense Secret written by Megan Faure and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2010-12-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Babysense Secret provides an easy-to-follow method to care for a baby during the first year. It explains how to read a baby's body language and signals, so that parents can know how their baby is feeling and what he wants. They can use this knowledge to guide their baby into a gentle routine which is convenient for the whole family and good for the baby's physical and emotional development. Some of the most common parental concerns in a baby's first year are: • Why is my baby crying? • How can I get my baby to sleep well? • How can I encourage my baby's development? • How can I make some time for myself? The Babysense Secret reveals that the answer to these concerns lies in a baby's senses and signals. At birth, a newborn is bombarded with new sensations that can make him over-stimulated; if parents can regulate his world during the first few months they will find that their baby is calmer and happier. All babies give signals to communicate with their parents-by learning to read these signals, parents can structure a flexible routine around their baby which will be beneficial to both. Babies go through a cycle of different states throughout the day: asleep, drowsy, calm-alert, active-alert, and crying. Parents can tell which state their baby is in from his signals-his body language and facial expressions. A routine can be structured around the states the baby goes through, so that parents aren't trying to get their baby to sleep when he is awake and wants to play. This baby-centric approach is the key to having a child who is happily awake, learning from his world or falling asleep with ease and sleeping peacefully for long stretches. Being able to interpret and respond to a baby's signals will keep him at ease, minimize colic, and provide the best environment for encouraging development. This ebook in PDF format contains at-a-glance charts which will show parents what to do in the middle of the night when their baby is crying inconsolably, and flow diagrams to work out exactly what their baby is trying to tell them, and the best methods to help.

Download or read book The Secret Book of Karma and Diseases written by Srikanth s and published by Srikanth s. This book was released on with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whence have I come? Whither shall I go? These questions will be asked by every intelligent person. They are the problems of life. Your present life is but one in a series of countless incarnations, though all are not necessarily in the human form. The union of the soul with a particular body is known as birth and its separation therefrom is called death. When the soul leaves its physical sheath, it transmigrates into another body, human, animal or even vegetable, according to its merits. Man does actions with the expectation of getting fruits, and so he takes a birth to enjoy the fruits of his actions. In the next birth, he does some more actions and he has to take another birth. In this manner the Samsaric wheel is revolving from eternity to eternity. When one gets knowledge of the Self, he is liberated from this round of births and deaths. Karma is beginningless and Samara is also beginningless. When a man does actions without expectation of fruits in selfless spirit, all fetters of Karma get loosened gradually. The diseases we suffer from, the births we get here on earth are all products of actions done by us in previous times. Every action has its reaction and no action goes unrewarded in a suitable manner. Evil actions do not go without their bitter effects upon the doer. Here are given some of the many pitiable conditions of life in which man has to live due to his careless sinful deeds. It is said that beings take birth in one or the other of these worlds in accordance with their actions, which bear fruits of a kind that can be reaped only in that particular world. Only fire can give heat and only food can appease hunger. Even so, only a particular condition and environment can enable us to reap the fruits of a specific action. Though punishments need not necessarily be due to the wrath of any personal Divine Being, it can be asserted that it is necessary, by the very law of nature, that the soul should manifest itself with a body suited for its experience determined by its past actions. As such, it is not unreasonable that variety in the nature of worlds should be real. We have to remember that the real is unseen.

Download or read book Testing Baby written by Rachel Grob and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within forty-eight hours after birth, the heel of every baby in the United States has been pricked and the blood sent for compulsory screening to detect or rule out a large number of disorders. Newborn screening is expanding rapidly, fueled by the prospect of saving lives. Yet many lives are also changed by it in ways not yet recognized. Testing Baby is the first book to draw on parents’ experiences with newborn screening in order to examine its far-reaching sociological consequences. Rachel Grob’s cautionary tale also explores the powerful ways that parents’ narratives have shaped this emotionally charged policy arena. Newborn screening occurs almost always without parents’ consent and often without their knowledge or understanding, yet it has the power to alter such things as family dynamics at the household level, the context of parenting, the way we manage disease identity, and how parents’ interests are understood and solicited in policy debates.
