Book Prostaglandins Chemical and Biochemical Aspects

Download or read book Prostaglandins Chemical and Biochemical Aspects written by S. M. M. Karim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second in a series of three books on advances in prostaglandin research. In recent years there has been an unparalleled interest in these compounds and as a result a vast amount of research data has accumulated since the publication of my earlier book in 1972. At that time it was possible to present a fairly comprehensive review of the various aspects of prosta glandin research in one volume. This is no longer possible and the contents are divided into three volumes; the first one dealing with prostaglandins and reproduction was published in October 1975; the present volume dealing with chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research, to be published in April 1976 and the third book dealing with physiological, pharmacological and pathological aspects of prostaglandin research wiII be published in May 1976. The authorship represents international scientists consisting of physiolo-. gists, pharmacologists, chemists, biochemists, veterinary scientists and obstetrician gynaecologists actively engaged in different areas of prosta glandin research. An attempt has been made to provide a total coverage of advances relating to prostaglandins. For the sake of completeness and continuity, material covered in the 1972 book is either briefly summarised or reference made to that edition. In recent years there have been notable advances in the chemical and biochemical aspects of prostaglandin research and these are discussed by various authorities in the chapters that follow.

Book The Physiology and Pharmacology of the Microcirculation

Download or read book The Physiology and Pharmacology of the Microcirculation written by Nicholas Mortillaro and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology and Pharmacology of the Microcirculation, Volume 1 discusses the biochemistry, metabolism, pharmacology, and physiology of the general microcirculation. This volume is organized into nine chapters that explore the microcirculation in several organ systems, such as brain, eye, heart, and kidney. The introductory chapters treat the biochemistry of isolated elements of the microvasculature, with special emphasis on the central nervous system. These chapters also explore the microvascular element and the vascular smooth muscle, focusing on their ultrastructural characteristics, innervation, and contraction-relaxation, and the effects of both endogenous and pharmacological vasoactive substances on vascular smooth muscle. The subsequent chapters deal with the exchange mode of the microcirculation; the mechanisms involved in the regulation of transcapillary fluid exchange; and the permeability of capillaries to small and large molecules in a variety of tissues. A discussion on the control mechanisms modulating microcirculatory dynamics is also included. The remaining four chapters are organized to deal with the microcirculation process in selected organs.

Book Prostaglandins and Fertility Regulation

Download or read book Prostaglandins and Fertility Regulation written by M. Toppozada and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of prostaglandins in physiological events and pathological disorders related to human reproduction has been most actively investigated in the past decade. Their clinical use for fertility regulation, extensively evaluated, represents the most common clinical indication for the administration of these remarkable compounds. Thus, it is most appropriate to update the available information related to the use of prostaglandins in the regulation of human fertility to provide a background document for the benefit of clinicians and scientists. Invited experts of international reputation from various parts of the world have contributed, each in his own area of interest, to offer this book, which we hope will fill an existing gap. M. T. M. B. E. S. E. H. ix 1 Potential for prostaglandin use in controlling human reproduction K. T. KIRTON and F. A. KIMBALL BACKGROUND It was observed in 1930 that seminal plasma of a number of species contained very large amounts of substance(s) capable of altering uterine motility. These substances were subsequently demonstrated to be prostaglandins (PGs); this began the early and continued association of this group of compounds with reproduction. The activity was found to be associated with a fraction containing lipid-soluble acids, derived from prostanoic acid. Restrictions imposed by obscure sources and small amounts of material available for testing were initially impediments to their study.

Book Practical Applications of Prostaglandins and their Synthesis Inhibitors

Download or read book Practical Applications of Prostaglandins and their Synthesis Inhibitors written by Sultan M.M. Karim and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fourth in a series of books on Advances in Prostaglandin Research published by MTP Press. From laboratory and animal studies a large number of practical applications of prostaglandins have been identified. In some areas clinical trials have also been carried out. There is usually a long time interval between identifying practical applications of new drugs and clinical trials. Most of the information on practical applications of prostaglandins is scattered in different journals. Although a number of books dealing with prostaglandin research have been published (including some on practical applications in specific areas, e.g. reproduction) there is no single volume dealing with all areas of practical applications of these substances. This book aims at filling this gap and should be of interest to clinicians as well as to medical and basic scientists in academic institutions and in the pharmaceutical industry. In some areas, exciting potential applications of prostaglandins have been identified from basic research but clinical trials have so far not been carried out. Such areas of practical applications are covered in a separate intro ductory chapter. All contributors to the volume are scientists and clinicians actively engaged in prostaglandin research and most are recognized authorities in specific areas. The need for rapid publication in a fast-expanding field is obvious.

Book Prostaglandins Immunopharmacology

Download or read book Prostaglandins Immunopharmacology written by B. B. Vargaftig and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Volume 4: Prostaglandins-Immunopharmacology contains the proceedings of the 7th International Congress of Pharmacology held in Paris, France, in 1978. The papers explore advances in the understanding of prostaglandins, their immunopharmacology, and their therapeutic applications. Topics covered range from the biochemistry of prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and prostacyclin to the pharmacology of blood platelets and pharmacological approaches to enhancement of immunity. This volume is comprised of 23 chapters and opens with a discussion on the discovery of prostaglandins and their possible biological functions, including platelet aggregation and adrenergic neurotransmission. The reader is then introduced to unstable metabolites of arachidonic acid in relation to thrombosis; pharmacological interference in biotransformation of arachidonic acid; participation of prostaglandins in inflammatory pain; and factors affecting the formation and actions of cyclic AMP in blood platelets. The following chapters explore the role of thymosin and the endocrine thymus in the maintenance of immune balance; effects of thymosin fraction 5 in cancer patients; and the immunoregulatory activities of non-toxic synthetic polyribonucleotides. This book will be of interest to practitioners in biosciences, pharmacology, physiology, and medicine.

Book Prostaglandins and the Kidney

Download or read book Prostaglandins and the Kidney written by Michael Dunn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June, 1981, we conducted a two day international symposium in Rome devoted to original scientific presentations on arachidonic acid metabolism in the kidney. Scientists from 20 countries were represented either in the general scientific program or in the poster presentation. This book does not represent the proceedings of this international gathering, but rather the edited manuscripts specifically prepared as sum maries of the scientific presentations. We feel that the timeliness and originality of the contributions as well as the need for a compilation of existing work on prosta glandins, thromboxane, and the kidney warrant this publication. The meetings would have been impossible without the generous and substantial support of the Italian government, the National Institutes of Health, United States Public Health Service, and Merck Sharp & Dohme International. Supplementary support was also received from Ciba Geigy S. p. A., Ente Fiuggi, Farmitalia Carlo Erba S. p. A., Glaxo Laboratori S. p. A., Hoechst Italia S. p. A., Leo Pharmaceutical Products, Pfizer Italiana S. p. A., Sigm? Tau S. p. A., Squibb S. p. A., The Upjohn Company, Wellcome Italia S. p. A., and Burroughs Wellcome Company. The efficient organization of the symposium was largely attributable to the superb efforts of Elisabeth Mutschlechner and Miki Scarinci of C.K. International, Rome. Linda Goldberg provided expert and invaluable editorial and secretarial assistance in the organization of this book. The book is divided into four major sections comprising: I.
