Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing prevalence of preterm birth in the United States is a complex public health problem that requires multifaceted solutions. Preterm birth is a cluster of problems with a set of overlapping factors of influence. Its causes may include individual-level behavioral and psychosocial factors, sociodemographic and neighborhood characteristics, environmental exposure, medical conditions, infertility treatments, and biological factors. Many of these factors co-occur, particularly in those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged or who are members of racial and ethnic minority groups. While advances in perinatal and neonatal care have improved survival for preterm infants, those infants who do survive have a greater risk than infants born at term for developmental disabilities, health problems, and poor growth. The birth of a preterm infant can also bring considerable emotional and economic costs to families and have implications for public-sector services, such as health insurance, educational, and other social support systems. Preterm Birth assesses the problem with respect to both its causes and outcomes. This book addresses the need for research involving clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science disciplines. By defining and addressing the health and economic consequences of premature birth, this book will be of particular interest to health care professionals, public health officials, policy makers, professional associations and clinical, basic, behavioral, and social science researchers.

Book The Role of Environmental Hazards in Premature Birth

Download or read book The Role of Environmental Hazards in Premature Birth written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2003-11-17 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year in the United States approximately 440,000 babies are born premature. These infants are at greater risk of death, and are more likely to suffer lifelong medical complications than full-term infants. Clinicians and researchers have made vast improvements in treating preterm birth; however, little success has been attained in understanding and preventing preterm birth. Understanding the complexity of interactions underlying preterm birth will be needed if further gains in outcomes are expected. The Institute of Medicine's Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research, and Medicine sponsored a workshop to understand the biological mechanism of normal labor and delivery, and how environmental influences, as broadly defined, can interact with the processes of normal pregnancy to result in preterm birth. This report is a summary of the main themes presented by the speakers and participants.

Book A Practical Manual to Labor and Delivery for Medical Students and Residents

This book was released on 2009-05-11 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is meant to bridge the gap between small handbooks that do not contain enough material to understand why you are doing certain things and large textbooks that lack the practical information you need for how to do specific procedures, write notes, orders, and dictations. After reading it, you will be prepared to care for an obstetric patient from the moment they arrive in triage until the time they are discharged. You will understand not only how to perform both simple and complicated procedures, but also why they are necessary, and you will have the answers to the most common pimp questions that are asked of students and residents. The most up-to-date literature and evidence-based recommendations have been used to create simple treatment algorithms for the most common issues you will face, and numerous illustrations are included for clarity as well. Because of its focus, this book is also valuable resource for staff physicians who need an updated text on current obstetric care as well as for those who regularly interact with and teach medical students and residents.

What about after the due date? When the baby is thought to be bigger than average? When the woman is older? If she had IVF? Or when her waters have broken earlier than usual? Induction of labour is an increasingly common recommendation and more and more women find themselves having to decide whether to let their body and baby go into labour spontaneously or agree to medical intervention. Book Prostaglandins and Thromboxanes

Download or read book Prostaglandins and Thromboxanes written by F. Berti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-12 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents lecture notes from the session of the International School of Pharmacology, at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre, on Advances in Prostaglandins that took place in Erice (Sicily), October 4 to October 15, 1976. The School was a NATO Advanced Study Institute. The aim of this international course was a compre hensive discussion by experts in various disciplines of the present status of our knowledge of the biological role of prostaglandins and thromboxanes. The synthesis, metabolism, and function of prosta glandins have been evaluated at the cellular level, in isolated tissues, and/or in the intact organism. The mode of action of prostaglandins and their interactions, particularly with cyclic nucleotides, in normal and pathological conditions, has been discussed with the aim of understanding the possible role of these compounds in hormonal regulation and cell response. The prostaglandin biosynthetic capacity of different tissues, under various experimental conditions, in the presence of specific precursors, and the inhibitory ac tivity of different agents have been examined to ascer tain the relationship between function and metabolism. For these reasons the discussion has also been extended to the methods (biological, immunological, and spectrometric) available for the direct and specific determination of prostaglandins and the evaluation of their synthesis and metabolism. The Editors hope that the book will be useful both to beginners and to those with a long-time interest in prostaglandins. F. Berti B. Samuelsson G. P. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowhere is the complex relation between inflammation and disease more apparent than in pregnancy. From the immune adaptation necessary for a mother to tolerate a genetically different fetus through gestation, to the role of inflammatory mediators in abnormalities of pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia and premature delivery, it is clear that inflammation plays a vital role in determining pregnancy outcome. In this authoritative text, an international panel of prestigious authors explores the complex relationship between inflammation, the mother, placenta and fetus. Providing comprehensive coverage by discussing both basic sciences and clinical applications, the book also ensures wide appeal by presenting a synthesis of the maternal and fetal aspects of immunological disorders in pregnancy.
