Book excerpt: This work explores how three great modern, international directors have adapted and applied African story-telling techniques, textual deconstruction, traditional Japanese art and theatrical forms, and Italian stage tradition to their productions of William Shakespeare's great play, ,I>The Tempest. It is an analysis of how these directors' approaches to this same canonical work have contributed to the development of the modern stage director and how the application of classical forms like commedia dell' arte and No theater has informed the creation of a new performance vocabulary. At the same time, Prospero's 'True Preservers' investigates the issue of post-colonial changes in the dynamics of the Prospero-Caliban relationship and how these three directors' disparate interpretations of the incendiary confederacy has impacted upon the play's contemporary performance history.

Book Wrinkled Deep in Time

Download or read book Wrinkled Deep in Time written by Maurice Charney and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare was acutely aware of our struggles with aging. His dramatic characters either prosper or suffer according to their relationship with maturity, and his sonnets explore time's ravaging effects. "Wrinkled deep in time" is how the queen describes herself in Antony and Cleopatra, and at the end of King Lear, there is a tragic sense that both the king and Gloucester have acquired a wisdom they otherwise lacked at the beginning of the play. Even Juliet matures considerably before she drinks Friar Lawrence's potion, and Macbeth and his wife prematurely grow old from their murderous schemes. This book investigates patterns of aging in Shakespeare, exploring the fulfillment or distress of Shakespeare's characters in combination with their mental and physical decline. Comparing the characterizations of elderly kings and queens, older lovers, patriarchal men, matriarchal women, and the senex -- the stereotypical old man of Roman comedy -- with the history of life expectancy in Shakespeare's England, the book uncovers similarities and differences between our attitudes toward aging then and now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New Cambridge Shakespeare appeals to students worldwide for its up-to-date scholarship and emphasis on performance. The series features line-by-line commentaries and textual notes on the plays and poems. Introductions are regularly refreshed with accounts of new critical, stage and screen interpretations. For this second edition of The Tempest, David Lindley has thoroughly revised the Introduction to take account of the latest developments in criticism and performance. He has also added a completely new section on casting in recent productions of the play. The complex questions this new section raises about colonisation, racial and gender stereotypes and the nature of theatrical experience are explored throughout the introduction. Careful attention is paid to dramatic form, stagecraft, and the use of music and spectacle in The Tempest, a play that is widely regarded as one of Shakespeare's most elusive and suggestive. A revised and updated reading list completes the edition.

Book excerpt: John Barth stays true to form in Every Third Thought, written from the perspective of a character Barth introduced in his short story collection The Development. George I. Newett and his wife Amanda Todd lived in the gated community of Heron Bay Estates until its destruction by a fluke tornado. This event, Newett notes, occurred on the 77th anniversary of the 1929 stock market crash, a detail that would appear insignificant if it were not for several subsequent events. The stress of the tornado's devastation prompts the Newett–Todds to depart on a European vacation, during which George suffers a fall on none other than his 77th birthday, the first day of autumn (or more cryptically, fall). Following this coincidence, George experiences the first of what is to become five serial visions, each appearing to him on the first day of the ensuing seasons, and each corresponding to a pivotal event in that season of his life. As the novel unfolds, so do these uncanny coincidences, and it is clear that, as ever, Barth possesses an unmatched talent in balancing his characteristic style and wit with vivid, page–turning storytelling.
