Download or read book The Story of Chautauqua written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut and published by Kessinger Publishing. This book was released on 1921 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Chautauqua, written by Jesse Lyman Hurlbut and originally published in 1921, is a comprehensive account of the history and development of the Chautauqua Institution, a cultural and educational center located in Chautauqua, New York. The book traces the origins of the Chautauqua movement, which began as a series of summer lectures and religious retreats in the late 19th century, and follows its growth into a national phenomenon that attracted millions of visitors each year. Hurlbut's book delves into the various aspects of the Chautauqua experience, including its religious and educational programs, its recreational activities, and its impact on American culture and society. He explores the lives and contributions of key figures in the Chautauqua movement, such as John Heyl Vincent and Lewis Miller, and describes the various buildings and landmarks that make up the Chautauqua grounds. Throughout the book, Hurlbut emphasizes the importance of the Chautauqua Institution as a place of intellectual and spiritual growth, and as a symbol of the progressive ideals of the era. He also touches on the challenges and controversies that the institution faced over the years, including financial struggles, changing social attitudes, and the impact of World War I. Overall, The Story of Chautauqua offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of one of America's most beloved cultural institutions, and provides insights into the social and intellectual currents that shaped the nation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Download or read book Hollywood Highbrow written by Shyon Baumann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's moviegoers and critics generally consider some Hollywood products--even some blockbusters--to be legitimate works of art. But during the first half century of motion pictures very few Americans would have thought to call an American movie "art." Up through the 1950s, American movies were regarded as a form of popular, even lower-class, entertainment. By the 1960s and 1970s, however, viewers were regularly judging Hollywood films by artistic criteria previously applied only to high art forms. In Hollywood Highbrow, Shyon Baumann for the first time tells how social and cultural forces radically changed the public's perceptions of American movies just as those forces were radically changing the movies themselves. The development in the United States of an appreciation of film as an art was, Baumann shows, the product of large changes in Hollywood and American society as a whole. With the postwar rise of television, American movie audiences shrank dramatically and Hollywood responded by appealing to richer and more educated viewers. Around the same time, European ideas about the director as artist, an easing of censorship, and the development of art-house cinemas, film festivals, and the academic field of film studies encouraged the idea that some American movies--and not just European ones--deserved to be considered art.
Download or read book The WPA Oklahoma Slave Narratives written by T. Lindsay Baker and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I never talk to nobody 'bout this" was the response of one aged African American when asked by a Works Project Administration field worker to share memories of his life in slavery and after emancipation. He and other ex-slaves were uncomfortable with the memories of a time when black and white lives were interwoven through human bondage. Yet the WPA field workers overcame the old people's reticence, and American West scholars T. Lindsay Baker and Julie P. Baker have collected all the known WPA Oklahoma "slave narratives" in this volume for the first time - including fourteen never published before. Their careful editorial notes detail what is known about the interviewers and the process of preparing the narratives.
