Book Taking the Land to Make the City

Download or read book Taking the Land to Make the City written by Mary P. Ryan and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2019-03-15 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical study shows how San Francisco and Baltimore were central to American expansion through the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The history of the United States is often told as a movement westward, beginning at the Atlantic coast and following farmers across the continent. But early settlements and towns sprung up along the Pacific as well as the Atlantic, as Spaniards and Englishmen took Indian land and converted it into private property. In this ambitious study of historical geography and urban development, Mary P. Ryan reframes the story of American expansion. Baltimore and San Francisco share common roots as early coastal trading centers immersed in the international circulation of goods and ideas. Ryan traces their beginnings back to the first human habitation of each area, showing how the juggernaut toward capitalism and nation-building could not commence until Europeans had taken the land for city building. She then recounts how Mexican ayuntamientos and Anglo-American city councils pioneered a prescient form of municipal sovereignty that served as both a crucible for democracy and a handmaid of capitalism. Moving into the nineteenth century, Ryan shows how the citizens of Baltimore and San Francisco molded the shape of the modern city: the gridded downtown, rudimentary streetcar suburbs, and outlying great parks. This history culminates in the era of the Civil War when the economic engines of cities helped forge the East and the West into one nation.

Book Remaking North American Sovereignty

Download or read book Remaking North American Sovereignty written by Jewel L. Spangler and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay collection presents a transnational history of mid-nineteenth century North America, a time of crisis that forged the continent’s political dynamics. North America took its political shape in the crisis of the 1860s, marked by Canadian Confederation, the US Civil War, the restoration of the Mexican Republic, and numerous wars and treaty regimes conducted between these states and indigenous peoples. This crisis wove together the three nation-states of modern North America from a patchwork of contested polities. Remaking North American Sovereignty brings together distinguished experts on the histories of Canada, indigenous peoples, Mexico, and the United States to re-evaluate this era of political transformation in light of the global turn in nineteenth-century historiography. They uncover the continental dimensions of the 1860s crisis that have been obscured by historical traditions that confine these conflicts within a national framework.

Book Taming Medusa

Download or read book Taming Medusa written by Russell Davis and published by Hoa-Help. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taming Medusa reveals a shocking truth: most of the problems in California homeowner associations (HOAs) are caused by a failure to understand and implement the correct model for organization and operation. The correct model is a business approach, not a government approach. Taming Medusa explains why HOAs are not neighborhood private governments, but medium to large private businesses, instead. The California Legislature established common interest developments and mutual benefit corporations to protect, preserve and promote property values, and to provide goods and services to association members. These goals are in the interests of everyone, including: homeowners, mortgage holders and municipalities. They are achieved by running HOAs as the private businesses they are and enforcing use restrictions and architectural standards that protect private property and commonly owned assets from the Tragedy of the Commons. Taming Medusa reveals the pitfalls of running HOAs as if they were municipalities. It shows people how to set up and operate an HOA so the returns on their investments (i.e., their homes) can be maximized.

Book Economic Risks of Climate Change

Download or read book Economic Risks of Climate Change written by Trevor Houser and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-18 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change threatens the economy of the United States in myriad ways, including increased flooding and storm damage, altered crop yields, lost labor productivity, higher crime, reshaped public-health patterns, and strained energy systems, among many other effects. Combining the latest climate models, state-of-the-art econometric research on human responses to climate, and cutting-edge private-sector risk-assessment tools, Economic Risks of Climate Change: An American Prospectus crafts a game-changing profile of the economic risks of climate change in the United States. This prospectus is based on a critically acclaimed independent assessment of the economic risks posed by climate change commissioned by the Risky Business Project. With new contributions from Karen Fisher-Vanden, Michael Greenstone, Geoffrey Heal, Michael Oppenheimer, and Nicholas Stern and Bob Ward, as well as a foreword from Risky Business cochairs Michael Bloomberg, Henry Paulson, and Thomas Steyer, the book speaks to scientists, researchers, scholars, activists, and policy makers. It depicts the distribution of escalating climate-change risk across the country and assesses its effects on aspects of the economy as varied as hurricane damages and violent crime. Beautifully illustrated and accessibly written, this book is an essential tool for helping businesses and governments prepare for the future.
