Book Frozen and Forgotten Conflicts in the Post Soviet States

Download or read book Frozen and Forgotten Conflicts in the Post Soviet States written by Ceslav Ciobanu and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unsettled and uncertain situations still persist in the former Soviet states of Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan, posing a serious threat to the stability of civil society, democratic institutions, and the pursuit of human rights. The cry "no peace, no war" drives the consolidation of separatist regimes and transforms them into de facto states. At the same time, this stalemate undermines the sovereignty and territorial integrity of legitimate states, obstructing their political, social, and economic development and contributing to an ongoing sense of tension. Ceslav Ciobanu identifies the historical roots of these conflicts and proposes effective solutions, paying attention to external factors, such as the EU, the UN, and the relationship between Russia and the United States.

Book Managing Intractable Conflicts

Download or read book Managing Intractable Conflicts written by Mensur Akgün and published by GPoT. This book was released on 2013 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While the Cyprus and Transnistrian problems are just two of the numerous ongoing conflicts around the world, we believe that a comparative study of these two cases can provide useful information for actors involved in conflict resolution. The Global Political Trends Center (GPoT Center) of Istanbul Kültür University has been involved with almost all dimensions of the Cyprus conflict since the Center's formation. During the past couple of years GPoT Center has organized several rounds of talks between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots entitled the Heybeliada Talks. The meetings have been conducted following the strict Chatham House rules in a retreat on Heybeliada Island close to Istanbul, and have become a symbol of GPoT Center's second track activities on Cyprus. In addition, GPoT Center has focused on several different dimensions of the Cyprus problem through its various publications. We have come to understand that a comparative perspective is needed in order to better comprehend the psychology of the conflicting parties and formulate innovative solution oriented approaches. GPoT Center is proud to share this study that compares the Cyprus issue with the Transnistrian case, deriving lessons from both. We would like to present this book to those who are concerned not only with the two case studies but all those who are aware of the potential negative regional and international consequences of leaving these conflicts unresolved"--Page 7.

Book The Success of Sanctions

Download or read book The Success of Sanctions written by Francesco Giumelli and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effectiveness of sanctions cannot purely be measured by the way they change the behaviour of their intended target. The degree to which sanctions constrain a rogue state's behaviour and the signals they send to future targets should also be prime considerations. In this thought provoking book Francesco Giumelli measures the true effectiveness of EU sanctions against a range of states including Belarus, Zimbabwe, Moldova, Uzbekistan, the USA and China. He demonstrates that focussing purely on behavioural change is limiting, especially when considering the actions and motivations of an international organisation, and develops a process to evaluate the direct and indirect impact of EU sanctions. Giumelli demonstrates the many different ways sanctions have been used by the EU to produce positive direct and indirect results and provides a multi-level framework to assess the success of sanctions in the future.

Download or read book Putin s Wars written by Marcel H. Van Herpen and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully updated book offers the first systematic analysis of Putin’s three wars, placing the Second Chechen War, the war with Georgia of 2008, and the war with Ukraine of 2014–2015 in their broader historical context. Drawing on extensive original Russian sources, Marcel H. Van Herpen analyzes in detail how Putin’s wars were prepared and conducted, and why they led to allegations of war crimes and genocide. He shows how the conflicts functioned to consolidate and legitimate Putin’s regime and explores how they were connected to a fourth, hidden, “internal war” waged by the Kremlin against the opposition. The author convincingly argues that the Kremlin—relying on the secret services, the Orthodox Church, the Kremlin youth “Nashi,” and the rehabilitated Cossacks—is preparing for an imperial revival, most recently in the form of a “Eurasian Union.” An essential book for understanding the dynamics of Putin’s regime, this study digs deep into the Kremlin’s secret long-term strategies. Readable and clearly argued, it makes a compelling case that Putin’s regime emulates an established Russian paradigm in which empire building and despotic rule are mutually reinforcing. As the first comprehensive exploration of the historical antecedents and political continuity of the Kremlin’s contemporary policies, Van Herpen’s work will make a valuable contribution to the literature on post-Soviet Russia, and his arguments will stimulate a fascinating and vigorous debate.

Book The EU and Conflict Resolution

Download or read book The EU and Conflict Resolution written by Nathalie Tocci and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-05-22 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the study of five ethno-political conflicts lying on or just beyond Europe's borders, this book analyzes the impact and effectiveness of EU foreign policy on conflict resolution. Conflict resolution features strongly as an objective of the European Union's foreign policy. In promoting this aim, the EU's geographical focus has rested primarily in its beleaguered backyard to the south and to the east. Taking a strong comparative approach, Nathalie Tocci explores the principal determinants of conflict dynamics in Cyprus, Turkey, Serbia-Montenegro, Israel-Palestine and Georgia in order to assess the impact of EU contractual ties on them. The volume includes topical analyzis based on first-hand experience, in-depth interviews with all the relevant actors and photography in ongoing conflict areas in the Middle East, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Balkans and the Caucasus. This revealing study shows that the gap between EU potential and effectiveness often rests in the specific manner in which the EU collectively chooses to conduct its contractual relations. The EU and Conflict Resolution will be of interest to all readers who wish to acquire an excellent understanding of the EU's impact on conflict contexts and will appeal to scholars of European politics, security studies and conflict resolution.
