This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters and Miscellanies in Prose, Rhyme, and Blank-Verse As for the critics, they may find it amusing to throw dust into other people's eyes, but we don't - gold dust more particularly; and as for making the fine eyes to sweeten their cream-o'-tartar visages, that's out of the question; cause why, it's much' easier for some folks to make ugly faces now-a - days, than pretty ones. And then, the supposition of their ever looking much beyond the title-page of one-half the books they undertake to praise or berate so unmercifully, is so refreshingly verdant, that it would be cruel to tan talize the locusts and caterpillars by any such preten sion! So, you see, there is no help for it - they will e'en have to abuse us to their heart's content; though our own private opinion (publicly expressed) is, that they will feel far more fatigued than satisfied, when they have done; for we intend to go right off to an insurance office, and then if we are killed with a criticism, it will be a matter for the stockholders to look into. Upon hearing of the assault on his publisher, he lost no time in avowing the authorship of the offensive review, and in intimating, in accordance with the usage of the period, that his friend Mr. Hugh Fraser was prepared to receive a message. A hostile meeting was arranged the combatants met in a field in the Barnet Road; and three shots were exchanged, at the last fire Maginu's bullet grazing the collar of his adversary's coat, and the bullet of the latter striking the ground beside Maginn's boot. Upon this third ineffectual exchange of shots, the account runs, the seconds interfered, and the parties, bowing to each other, left the ground without explanation. Book Early English Miscellanies in Prose and Verse

This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early English Miscellanies, in Prose and Verse: Selected From an Inedited Manuscript of the Fifteenth Century To the above brief enumeration of the contents of the manuscript may be added the version of the amusing tale of the Friar and the Boy, printed in the following pages, pp. 46-62. Several copies of this poem have been preserved, and as they allvary considerably from each other, the present is worth preservation, as perhaps the least incorrect of any of the early manuscript copies known to exist. Another, preserved in ms. Cantab. Ee. Iv. 35, was printed by Mr. Wright, 181no, 1836. The story is well known, and was a common chap-book history, in a modernized form, until a veryreoent period. Book An English Prose Miscellany

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An English Prose Miscellany: Selected With an Introduction Melvilles) to interest the reader in their characters apart from what they write. It has been found necessary to arrange this book in more than three broad divisions; for it is surely desirable that the writers of sermons, and of pious ejaculations, should be separated (whatever their quality) from the novelists and satirists, from the historians and the translators. The book has therefore been divided into eight main divisions, containing, respectively, selections from the works of story tellers, novelists, moral and philosophical writers, religious and theological writers, historians, translators, diarists, character writers, and memoir and letter writers. Each division, except in one or two places where the rule has been broken for the sake of variety, has been arranged in a rough chronological order, precedence being settled by the date of the author's birth (conjectural in some cases) not by the date of the publication of the book from which the excerpt has been taken. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gifts of Genius: A Miscellany of Prose and Poetry, by American Authors This volume speaks so well for itself that it does not need many words of preface to commend it to a wide circle of readers. Its rich and varied contents, however, become far more interesting when interpreted by the motive that won them from their authors; and when the kindly feel ing that Offered them so freely is known, these gifts, like the pearls of a rosary, will be prized not only severally but collectively, because strung together by a sacred thread. The story of this undertaking is a very short and simple one. Miss Davenport, who had been for many years an active and successful teacher in our schools and families, especially in the beautiful arts of drawing and painting, was prostrated by a severe illness, which impaired her sight and finally terminated in blindness. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literary Miscellany, or Selections and Extracts, Classical and Scientific; With Originals, in Prose and Verse: Miscellanies Admired as Mr. Shenstone is as a poet, his char acter, as a man of clear judgment, and deep pene tration, will best appear from his prose works. It is there we must search for the acuteness of his under standing, and his profound knowledge of the human heart. It is to be lamented, indeed, that some things here are unfinished, and can be regarded only as fragments: many are left as single thoughts, but which, like the sparks of diamonds, shew the rich ness of the mine to which they belong; or, like the foot of a Hercules, discover the uncommon strength, and extraordinary dimensions of the hero. I have no apprehension of incurring blame from any one, for preserving these valuable remains: they will dis cover to every reader, the author's sentiments on sev eral important subjects. And there can be very few, to whom they will not impart many thoughts, which they would never perhaps have been able to draw from the source of their own re ections.
