Download or read book Franciscan Virtue written by Krijn Pansters and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-01-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of the virtues of evangelical life according to three major Franciscan authors: Francis of Assisi, Bonaventure of Bagnoregio, and David of Augsburg. It is the first to offer a historical and source-based treatment of early Franciscan virtue discourse, by answering the following questions: How do the authors describe and prescribe the essential virtues for the life in the footsteps of Jesus Christ? How are the spiritual virtues acquired or lost? How do the development and application of these virtues shape “perfect” individuals as well as the “good” of the community? This work is a valuable contribution to our understanding of how the virtues functioned as central, organizing elements in early Franciscan literature and instruction.

Download or read book He Became Poor written by Christopher A. Franks and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The only comprehensive theological treatment of Aquinas and economic theory. / Drawing on the views of Thomas Aquinas, this book challenges the modern economic tendency toward the "proprietary self" and calls for a renewed and timely appreciation of the virtues of trusting receptivity and humble awareness of our membership in a larger order. Christopher Franks reveals how the summons to become poor bestows a new intelligibility on formerly obscure economic teachings. In the course of his discussion Franks juxtaposes Aquinas with Aristotle, John Locke, and Alasdair MacIntyre. / He Became Poor not only makes a provocative case for taking Aquinas's thoughts on economics more seriously, but also illustrates how the very market conditions of the modern world cloud any attempt to fully understand Aquinas. Franks proffers a convincing argument that questioning market-formed assumptions can actually help us recover the evangelical character of Aquinas's ethics. / Drawing deeply on the views of Thomas Aquinas, He Became Poor challenges the modern economic tendency toward the proprietary self and calls for a renewed appreciation of the virtues of trusting receptivity and humble awareness of our membership in a larger benevolent order. This Christ-configured economics is surpassingly relevant as global capitalism is faced with a cataclysmic collapse. The greatest praise I can give this book is that its author has learned much from Dominicans past and present not least from Thomas Aquinas so much indeed that He Became Poor is suffused with the true spirit of Dominican poverty. We have much to learn from this important work. Reinhard Htter / Duke Divinity School

Download or read book Ecclesiology and the Franciscan Charism written by Peter Damian Fehlner and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the Collected Essays of Peter Damian Fehlner on Ecclesiology and the Franciscan Charism contains some of the most practical of all of Fehlner’s writings. This volume is divided into three parts. In the first, we are treated to Fehlner’s first reflections on ecclesiology in the wake of Vatican II and his own earlier research into Bonaventure’s ecclesiology and Duns Scotus’s teachings on grace and personhood. To Fehlner, these studies, along with his Tractatus de gratia and teaching notes on the mission of the Holy Spirit, all from the 1960s, contain the rationes seminales of the entirety of his later thought. In part two, we find writings mainly from the following two decades on the Conventual Franciscan charism, the ecclesiola, the church in microcosm. Here we can readily discern the radical effects of Fehlner’s encounter with Maximilian Kolbe and this volume’s close affinity with volume six of this series, on St. Maximilian Kolbe. In part three of this volume, comprising essays from the final fifteen years of his life, Fehlner brings his lifetime of prayerful contemplation and research directly to bear upon practical spirituality. In these essays, Fehlner’s spiritual testament, our author presents his Catholic and Franciscan charismatic vision of Christian life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 of The Writings of Charles De Koninck carries on the project begun by volume 1 of presenting the first English edition of the collected works of the Catholic Thomist philosopher Charles De Koninck (1906–1965). Ralph McInerny (1929–2010) was the project editor and prepared the excellent translations. This volume begins with two works published in 1943: Ego Sapientia: The Wisdom That Is Mary, De Koninck's first study in Mariology, and The Primacy of the Common Good Against the Personalists (with The Principle of the New Order), which generated a strong critical reaction. Included in this volume are two reviews of The Primacy of the Common Good, by Yves R. Simon and I. Thomas Eschmann, O.P., and De Koninck's substantial response to Eschmann in his lengthy “In Defence of St. Thomas.” The volume concludes with a group of short essays: “The Dialectic of Limits as Critique of Reason,” “Notes on Marxism,” “This Is a Hard Saying,” “[Review of] Between Heaven and Earth,” and “Concept, Process, and Reality.”
