Book excerpt: De nouveaux matériaux lasers solides dopés terres rares et pompés par diode émettant soit à 1 μm (dopage Yb) pour les applications laser de puissance et femtosecondes, soit à 1,55 μm (codopage Er, Yb) pour la zone de sécurité oculaire ont été étudiés. Le premier volet étudie deux types de défauts récurrents (centres colorés et diffusants) dans la matrice CaGdAlO4:Yb. Les différentes stoechiométries et les paramètres de croissance testés ne permettent pas d’éliminer les centres diffusants. Par contre, une substitution Ca2+-Sr2+ les supprime mais induit d’autres défauts sous forme de bulles. Les centres colorés sont attribués à des polarons O-, hypothèse confirmée par la modélisation des bandes d’absorption. L’influence d’un codopage de la matrice par un ion tétravalent en substitution de l’ion Al3+ tend à montrer un effet bénéfique sur la diminution des centres colorés. Le second volet concerne la recherche de matrices cristallines dopées Er3+, Yb3+. Une étude en composition permet de sélectionner les taux de dopage optimaux dans les matrices Ca2Al2SiO7, SrGdGa3O7, Y2SiO5, CaGdAlO4. Des croissances de monocristaux sont effectuées par le procédé Czochralski. Leurs propriétés spectroscopiques, thermiques et laser sont évaluées. En régime continu, les cristaux de CAS génèrent des puissances laser d’environ 200-300 mW à 1555 nm tandis qu’en régime déclenché, des pulses d’énergie de 1,4 mJ et 40 ns sont obtenus pour la première fois. A performances équivalentes, le CAS présente une résistance au pompage incident bien supérieure à celle du verre phosphate commercial, ce qui en fait une alternative possible.

His first assignment was with the University of Paris VI before he was appointed to the CNRS, the French National Research Center. His research was focused on optical pumping, statistical mechanics of quantum gases, musical acoustics and the foundations of quantum mechanics.
