Book excerpt: Le travail présenté dans cette thèse porte sur la proposition d'une méthode globale de spécification, validation, simulation et implantation de protocoles adaptés aux réseaux locaux hybrides (filaires et sans fil). La première partie traite tout d'abord des différentes méthodes existantes de description formelle de protocoles. Nous proposons ensuite une étude complète des simulateurs de réseaux, dans laquelle nous distinguons les simulateurs associés aux langages de description formelle et les simulateurs industriels de réseaux complexes. Nous présentons dans la deuxième partie l'origine, les standards et les concepts des réseaux sans fil courtes et longues distances. Les techniques de transmission radio en étalement de spectre sont présentées, ainsi que les couches de protocoles de la norme IEEE 802.11 et les différents produits d'interface réseau radio respectant cette norme. La troisième partie est consacrée à l'identification des liens entre le langage de description formelle ESTELLE, et le simulateur industriel OPNET. Nous proposons le langage ESTELLE+ qui prend en compte les contraintes de mobilité et de topologies dynamiques des réseaux locaux hybrides avec stations mobiles. Un passage automatique entre ESTELLE+ et OPNET est réalisé, grâce au développement d'un compilateur spécifique. L'application de cette méthode globale est présentée dans la quatrième partie, en s'appuyant sur un réseau local hybride utilisant un mécanisme de relais de proche en proche. Nous proposons les spécifications en ESTELLE+, les couches de protocoles modélisées avec OPNET pour effectuer l'analyse de performances après les simulations. La cinquième partie illustre la phase d'implantation manuelle de la méthode globale sur une maquette expérimentale. Cette étape nous permet d'identifier les contraintes des interfaces réseaux radio et du langage java, pour une future implantation entièrement automatisée.

As a volume of the LCA compendium, the book is structured according to the LCIA framework developed by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)passing through the phases of definition or selection of impact categories, category indicators and characterisation models (Classification): calculation of category indicator results (Characterisation); calculating the magnitude of category indicator results relative to reference information (Normalisation); and converting indicator results of different impact categories by using numerical factors based on value-choices (Weighting). Chapter one offers a historical overview of the development of life cycle impact assessment and presents the boundary conditions and the general principles and constraints of characterisation modelling in LCA. The second chapter outlines the considerations underlying the selection of impact categories and the classification or assignment of inventory flows into these categories. Book excerpt: The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States marked the beginning of the study of our postindustrial information society. Austrian-born economist Fritz Machlup had focused his research on the patent system, but he came to realize that patents were simply one part of a much bigger "knowledge economy." He then expanded the scope of his work to evaluate everything from stationery and typewriters to advertising to presidential addresses--anything that involved the activity of telling anyone anything. The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the United States then revealed the new and startling shape of the U.S. economy. Machlup's cool appraisal of the data showed that the knowledge industry accounted for nearly 29 percent of the U.S. gross national product, and that 43 percent of the civilian labor force consisted of knowledge transmitters or full-time knowledge receivers. Indeed, the proportion of the labor force involved in the knowledge economy increased from 11 to 32 percent between 1900 and 1959--a monumental shift. Beyond documenting this revolution, Machlup founded the wholly new field of information economics. The transformation to a knowledge economy has resonated throughout the rest of the century, especially with the rise of the Internet. As two recent observers noted, "Information goods--from movies and music to software code and stock quotes--have supplanted industrial goods as the key drivers of world markets." Continued study of this change and its effects is testament to Fritz Machlup's pioneering work.
