Download or read book The Coming Age of Direct Democracy written by Mark Baldassare and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2008 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the unique form of democracy that has been taking shape in California since the historic recall of Gray Davis and the election of Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2003. The authors examine how Governor Schwarzenegger's leadership has encouraged the growth of direct democracy, in which public policy decisions are made by voters at the ballot box rather than by elected representatives in the legislature. Using the Public Policy Institute of California Statewide Surveys, which include interviews with more than 150,000 Californians, Baldassare and Katz detail the transformation in the state's political climate and the public attitudes behind this change. The authors conclude that this transformation will likely take place in other states, perhaps even nationwide, and offer recommendations for ways to improve policymaking in a hybrid democracy. Book excerpt: CALIFORNIA: THE POLITICS OF DIVERSITY, 10th Edition, explores the uniqueness and excitement of California's political environment through two key themes: diversity and hyperpluralism. Experienced educators with backgrounds in state and local government, Lawrence and Cummins bring an informed, insightful perspective to the examination of the numerous pressures that make governing the state increasingly challenging. This edition offers new pedagogical features that drive home significant developments and events in California politics. The text is also written in an easily accessible way that provides examples particularly interesting to students. The new edition covers the final years in office of former Governor Jerry Brown and provides insight on newly-elected Governor Gavin Newsom’s administration. It also provides updated analysis of the state’s major policy areas, including water, housing, transportation, health care, K-12 education, higher education and climate change. Download or read book Morality at the Ballot written by Daniel R. Biggers and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-12-15 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the United States, there is wide variation in opportunities for citizens to craft legislation through the process of direct democracy. Previous studies suggest that an active role in policy making can spark political interest and engagement, encouraging individuals, who would otherwise abstain from voting, to turn out. Daniel R. Biggers challenges this contention, testing a new theoretical framework that details the exact circumstances under which any proposition might increase participation. Morality at the Ballot reveals that the ability of direct democracy to increase turnout is significantly more limited than currently thought, and that the propositions that do affect participation are restricted to a small subset of ballot issues that include morality policy. Biggers uses these morality propositions to demonstrate the conditions necessary for direct democracy to influence turnout, affect who votes, and shape electoral and policy outcomes. The investigation provides significant insights into the consequences of deciding policy via the ballot and expanding the role for citizens in the political process.
