Book Review of the Recovery Plan of the Kentucky Cave Shrimp Palaemonias Ganteri Hay

Download or read book Review of the Recovery Plan of the Kentucky Cave Shrimp Palaemonias Ganteri Hay written by Angela Catherine Kopp and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is to preserve species and conserve habitat. Recovery plans, which are pivotal to the ESA, outline what actions need to be taken to prevent further decline of a species. In 1988, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service published the Kentucky Cave Shrimp Recovery Plan. The goal of the plan was to protect shrimp populations by increasing the quality of their habitat. The Kentucky Cave Shrimp Recovery Plan includes eight objectives addressing what changes need to be made to prevent further decline of the species. This study assessed the recovery plan by obtaining information that has been reported concerning the shrimp from the various organizations involved in the recovery process. The majority of work completed on the recovery plan has been performed by local and state agencies. A new sewage treatment plant was built, along with the enforcement of strict septic system regulations. The state of Kentucky enacted two laws and one special order to protect the cave system. Also, programs to involve the local community in the protection of the cave have been successful. Some basic research still needs to be completed for successful recovery such as the location of shrimp populations, life history work and water quality parameters. Small amounts of work have previously been done, but the data are old and incomplete. Catch basins, monitoring programs, re-routing traffic carrying hazardous materials and prevention of non-native predators into the cave are all projects that are currently being developed. A considerable amount of work still needs to be completed to have a successful recovery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing specifically on the management of karst environments, this volume draws together the world’s leading karst experts to provide a vital source for the study and management of this unique physical setting. Although karst landscapes cover 12% of the Earth’s terrain and provide 25% of the world’s drinking water, the resource management of karst environments has only previously received indirect attention. Through a comprehensive approach, Karst Management focuses on engineering issues associated with surface karst such as quarries, dams, and agriculture, subsurface topics such as the management of groundwater, show caves, cave biota, and geo-archaeology projects. Chapters that focus on karst as an integrated system look at IUCN World Heritage sites, national parks, policy and regulation, measuring systematic disturbance, information management, and public environmental education. The text incorporates the most up-to-date research from leading karst scientists. This volume provides important perspectives for university students, educators, geoengineers, resource managers, and planners who are interested in or work with this unique physical landscape.
