Book Reflexive Governance

    Book Details:
  • Author : Olivier De Schutter
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2010-05-19
  • ISBN : 1847315844

Download or read book Reflexive Governance written by Olivier De Schutter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-19 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflexive governance offers a theoretical framework for understanding modern patterns of governance in the European Union (EU) institutions and elsewhere. It offers a learning-based approach to governance, but one which can better respond to concerns about the democratic deficit and to the fulfillment of the public interest than the currently dominant neo-institutionalist approaches. The book is composed of one general introduction and eight chapters. Chapter one introduces the concept of reflexive governance and describes the overall framework. The following chapters of the book then summarise the implications of reflexive governance in major areas of domestic, EU and global policy-making. They address in turn: Services of General Interest, Corporate Governance, Institutional Frames for Markets, Regulatory Governance, Fundamental Social Rights, Healthcare Services, Global Public Services and Common Goods. While the themes are diverse, the chapters are unified by their attempt to get to the heart of which concepts of governance are dominant in each field, and what their successes and failures have been: reflexive governance then emerges as one possible response to the failures of other governance models currently being relied upon by policy-makers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Zealand has particularly high levels of biodiversity but a very poor record of conserving it. This guide is designed to assist people who want to achieve better biodiversity outcomes as well as those whose activities impact on New Zealand's indigenous habitats and species. Describes the legal and voluntary tools which are available to protect biodiversity and opportunities for public involvement in their deployment. Identifies elements of 'good practice' and how they can be implemented on the ground. Includes specific chapters addressing biodiversity in indigenous grasslands, forests, productive land, freshwater, urban environments, wetlands, coastal areas and the sea. An invaluable resource for anyone concerned with managing and protecting biodiversity, including landowners, community groups, local authorities, developers and planners.--Cover.

Book Unlearning the Colonial Cultures of Planning

Download or read book Unlearning the Colonial Cultures of Planning written by Libby Porter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-24 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonialization has never failed to provoke discussion and debate over its territorial, economic and political projects, and their ongoing consequences. This work argues that the state-based activity of planning was integral to these projects in conceptualizing, shaping and managing place in settler societies. Planning was used to appropriate and then produce territory for management by the state and in doing so, became central to the colonial invasion of settler states. Moreover, the book demonstrates how the colonial roots of planning endure in complex (post)colonial societies and how such roots, manifest in everyday planning practice, continue to shape land use contests between indigenous people and planning systems in contemporary (post)colonial states.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered where surfing waves come from, what makes every wave different, why some peel perfectly and others just close out; why, some days, the waves come in sets and other days they don’t, and how the tides, the wind and the shape of the sea floor affect the waves for surfing? If you have, this book is for you. Now in its third edition, Surf Science is the first book to talk in depth about the science of waves from a surfer’s point of view. It fills the gap between surfing books and waves textbooks, and will help you learn how to predict surf. Surf Science is also a useful introduction to oceanography and the science of waves. You don’t need a scientific background to read it – just curiosity and a fascination for waves.
