Book Democratization in Malawi

Download or read book Democratization in Malawi written by M. Phiri and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vote in favour of multi-party politics at the National Referendum of 1993, and the subsequent General Election of 1994, heralded the advent of a democratic system of government in Malawi. lt soon became apparent, however, that there remained many obstacles to overcome before Malawi would be a truly democratic country. In this volume, a multi-disciplinary approach has been employed to examine both the progress and the pitfalls of the democratization process. Political scientists, lawyers, historians, theologians, literary critics, linguists, economists, and educationalists apply the tools of their respective disciplines to take stock of democratization in Malawi. This book is an indispensable guide to anyone seeking to understand the social and political situation in Malawi in the early years of the Second Republic.

Book The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy written by Hopestone Chavula and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-09-12 with total page 705 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Handbook of the Malawi Economy is an essential reference material with new research contributions and insights across the different areas of economic development to shape the country's future growth and development trajectory. The volume is the first publication that tries to assess the performance of the Malawi economy since independence, by examining how the underpinning political and economic history, and the associated policies and strategies have affected the country's long-term socio-economic development. It captures a broad range of opinions, approaches, and conclusions, which serve to underline both the complexity of the issues and challenges facing Malawi, and the immense difficulties in tackling them. Common themes emerge as many authors agree that the country needs to learn from its past experiences in terms of policy design and implementation, and the need to implement dynamic policies that could spur productive and sustained growth and development by tackling challenges associated with the continuously evolving global economic environment.

Book Revolt of the Ministers

Download or read book Revolt of the Ministers written by Colin Baker and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2001-03-23 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I certainly had very extreme views, very violent views... and I certainly did advocate... extreme methods.” So a leading Nyasaland nationalist characterised the struggle for independent Malawi, but Dr Hastings Banda, a highly respected medical doctor based for many years in London was invited back to Nyasaland to lead the movement to independent Malawi and the Malawi National Congress. Here was, or so it seemed, a loyal and progressive Government with pro-Western leadership – a final success in the story of British decolonisation. Yet within three months all but one of the cabinet ministers had resigned or were dismissed, former ministers fled the country including distinguished members of the independence movement. Even the pro-Congress Europeans feared for their lives. Colin Baker unravels this potentially disastrous episode in Malawi's history and in the story of decolonisation. He illuminates not only the immediate post-independence problems of Malawi, a newly independent African state, but charts the growth of Banda's autocracy. This detailed and revealing study reveals the problems inherent in the whole momentous story of Africa in independence and decolonisation.

Book The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights

Download or read book The African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights written by Nat Rubner and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-10-17 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landmark study of the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights. Documents on one side the international community's inability to foist a human rights system upon Africa and on the other the process within the OAU (now African Union) that eventually brought it into being and determined its content. The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR), which was proposed in 1979, adopted in 1981 and came into effect in 1986, was the first non-Western declaration of human rights and the first official statement of an African human rights perspective. With Africa largely absent in 1948 when the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) was adopted, it stands in stark historical reproach to the Western conception of universal human rights as a pivotal document in the decolonisation of the continent. This book, for the first time, presents a comprehensive account of the development of the ACHPR, which is key to a proper understanding of its fundamental nature. Through documenting its process of construction, it becomes possible to understand how Africans themselves understood the process and the issues involved and how the ACHPR became a political text asserted by African leaders and not a continuum of a so-called universal human rights tradition. The result is a radical repositioning of the underlying context of the ACHPR, one of the most important documents in modern African history, of how it came to be and how it should therefore be understood. Volume 2 describes the process through which the ACHPR came into being. Analysing the role of Western governments, the UN and NGOs, it shows that, contrary to the prevailing view of African human rights commentators, their influence was limited and at times counter-productive. That, in fact, the formulation of the ACHPR was a profoundly political process that was primarily a product of an African desire to instigate its own human rights perspective as a counter to the human rights universalism advanced by the Western post-war human rights tradition.

Book Illusions of Location Theory Consequences for Blue Economy in Africa

Download or read book Illusions of Location Theory Consequences for Blue Economy in Africa written by Douglas Yates and published by Vernon Press. This book was released on 2021-01-05 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Illusions of Location Theory: Consequences for Blue Economy in Africa" questions the relevance of ‘location theory’ in explaining the coastal-hinterland continuum and the implications for the utilization of blue economy ecosystem in such a contested space in Africa. It pays more attention to territorial contestations, maritime disputes, vulnerabilities of landlocked states, and expansionist policies as displayed through spatial organizational regimes. These areas of investigation have previously been largely studied from the narrow perspective of ‘location’, unduly focusing on comparative advantages of ‘distance’, while neglecting the influence of ‘forces’ such as technology, ideology, and the power of mental mapping in spatial decision making. This volume puts forward the argument that the harmonious relationship between states, and efficient exploitation of the blue economy ecosystem in ways that promote peace between states, lies not only in the structural transformation of markets, but also in bridging the spatial and social divide between the coastal and hinterland societies. Thus, this work proffers possibilities for a holistic regime for managing Africa’s coastal-hinterland continuum through innovative strategies such as SMART blue economies and the infusion of the geopolitical dimension into the management of maritime and territorial diplomacy. The combination of theoretical and empirical analysis, buttressed by in-depth case studies of what works in the management of blue economy ecosystem and what does not work, make this volume ideal for researchers, students, and practitioners interested in African regional studies, African political economy, political geography, strategic military studies, governance of seas and oceans, and maritime science/diplomacy.

Book Fostering Constitutionalism in Africa

Download or read book Fostering Constitutionalism in Africa written by Charles Manga Fombad and published by PULP. This book was released on 2010 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the publication This volume comprises a small selection of papers first presented at the 2007 African Network of Constitutional Lawyers' conference in Nairobi. With contributions from Côte d'Ivoire, Nigeria, Zambia, Malawi and the DRC, they cross the legal and language divides in Africa. Each paper raises issues that concern all Africans committed to good governance and human rights. They provide thought-provoking discussions of constitutional change and maintaining constitutional stability; ways of controlling the power of the executive; and who should control prosecutions, the executive or an independent body. They identify many challenges and try to chart new directions for the entrenchment of constitutionalism on the continent. All the contributions are in English and French to encourage a truly continental debate on these topical issues. This book is the first in the 'Rule of Law in Africa' series and the financial assistance of the World Bank is gratefully acknowledged. About the editors: Charles Fombad is Professor of law and Head of Department of Public Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Pretoria. Christina Murray is Professor of Human Rights and Constitutional Law at the University of Cape Town.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "African Yearbook of International Law" provides an intellectual forum for the systematic analysis and scientific dissection of issues of international law as they apply to Africa, as well as Africa's contribution to the progressive development of international law. It contributes to the promotion, acceptance of and respect for the principles of international law, as well as to the encouragement of the teaching, study, dissemination and wider appreciations of international law in Africa. A clear articulation of Africa's views on the various aspects of international law based on the present realities of the continent as well as on Africa's civilization, culture, philosophy and history will undoubtedly contribute to a better understanding among nations. The "African Yearbook of International Law" plays an important role in examining the tensions underlying the State in Africa, and by shedding more light on the causes of the fragility of African State institutions so as to facilitate the identification of appropriate remedies. The tension and interrelationships among issues such as territorial integrity, self determination, ethnic diversity and nation-building are constantly addressed. Development, human rights and democratization in Africa are also the subject of continuous attention and examination. The Special Theme of this volume is Human Rights and Development in Africa'.
