Book Strategies for Postsecondary Education

Download or read book Strategies for Postsecondary Education written by Peter Scott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1975, Strategies for Postsecondary Education looks at how postsecondary education absorbs an increasing proportion of education budgets in developed countries. The book analyses the inequalities in the American postsecondary education system and compares its performance with France and the United Kingdom. The traditional concept of higher education with its preference for the college sector is now being challenged by the notion of postsecondary education which embraces the community colleges and preparatory schools in the United States and the polytechnics in Great Britain. The book argues that the development of the non-collegiate sector, including further education outside a formal educational context, will extend the range of educational opportunity and make much better use of limited resources.

Book Strategy of Education primary and Higher in Iraq

Download or read book Strategy of Education primary and Higher in Iraq written by Sami AL-Mudhaffar and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few decades of war and sanctions, Iraq has suffered great losses in death and damages. Harm has not been inflicted only on persons, communities, communications, institutions and land; but equal and perhaps greater damage has been the outcome of the lost development opportunities: stagnated communities, uneducated children, adolescents and youth, neglected land, accelerating mortality rates, and the construction that did not take place. The nation has also witnessed an unprecedented devastation and a near-to-complete break-down of the education system. The prevailing state-of-affairs of higher education is disheartening and presents a virtual collapse: academic staff continues to leave for fear of mounting threats and insurgency, teaching being erratic and most buildings being damaged or destroyed. The education system is currently in a stage of profound rebuilding and restructuring particularly at a time when the demand for higher education system addressing the national needs and priorities comprehensively seems to be a source of much pressure. This mounting pressure is equally evident on Iraqi institutions and centres of knowledge to produce relevant and knowledge at an unparalleled rate. The diverse demands for qualified human resources of the complex national economy with evolving global links require knowledge and skills for decision-making and for production. The current efforts of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MHESR) and institutions of higher learning are in the midst of accelerating change, yet they have to grapple with profound processes of decision-making addressing issues such as: relevance (curricula reforms and accreditation); quality; scientific research; teachers' and students' welfare; technical and teachers' education; academic freedom; decentralization and institutional autonomy; long-term financial sustainability; and internationalization. Simultaneously, institutions of higher learning will also have as a goal to provide learners with academic and ethical values, as well as having the commitment to educate critical citizens prepared to engage in democratic participation. Change of the Iraqi higher education structure and of research is thus seated in an extremely complex reality, in which no self-evident choices are available and where actions have multiple effects in a dynamically interdependent environment.Yet the challenges Iraq faces cannot be solved with piecemeal changes ;but strong forces that will affect Iraqi society in the near future: economic reconstruction, population change, globalization and the rapid growth in knowledge. The situation must be met by a fundamental reorientation of higher education activities under a unified perspective (new vision). Providing this "new vision" and a "strategic plan" for specific and realistic short- and medium-term choices is the aim of this paper. The vision and the strategic plan have been formulated to help guide the initiatives of the MOHESR and to provide clear priorities for an efficient use of available resources.

Book Responding to Massification

Download or read book Responding to Massification written by Philip G. Altbach and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global massification of postsecondary education, with more than 200 million students studying at an untold number of institutions focusing on every specialization possible, necessitates a differentiated system of postsecondary education in every country. This book provides the first comparative study of how postsecondary education has evolved in 13 countries. The study offers an analysis of current global realities and how different nations have constructed their response. Our research shows that few countries have developed rational and differentiated academic systems to meet new realities. The book provides insights regarding useful approaches for the development of academic systems. The book reveals similarities and differences in the 13 case studies as different governments have expanded postsecondary education to respond to the massification of enrollment. Postsecondary education has become diversified, but for the most part not adequately differentiated in most countries. Several of the case studies underscore the challenge of sustaining differentiation within the system if credentials from non-university, postsecondary institutions are considered of lesser social status. Too often institutions that successfully address the practical needs of national economies are ultimately merged into the university system. There is an urgent need for the planning and structuring of coherent systems of postsecondary education to serve the increasingly diverse clientele in need of the skills required by the knowledge economy. This study is the first global analysis aimed at understanding how post-secondary education can be organized to meet society’s requirements and points to the need for designing coherent academic systems.

Book Rethinking Post Secondary Education Why Universities and Colleges Need to Change What Change Could Look Like

Download or read book Rethinking Post Secondary Education Why Universities and Colleges Need to Change What Change Could Look Like written by Janet Tully, MSc and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a great deal of talk about a "transformation" taking place in post-secondary education, linked to changes in the nature of work, technology, and the challenge of financing education at a time of austerity. The New York based journalist, Thomas Friedman, for example, writing in the New York Times in January 2013, imagined a different future for colleges and universities:"I can see a day soon where you'll create your own college degree by taking the best online courses from the best professors from around the world -- some computing from Stanford, some entrepreneurship from Wharton, some ethics from Brandeis, some literature from Edinburgh -- paying only the nominal fee for the certificates of completion."It is through these market based mechanisms - the thinking goes - that colleges and universities will be transformed. He's still dreaming the world is flat, he can dream on.
