Book excerpt: Measurements of visual performance (stereopsis and visual resolution) were acquired to compare results achieved using unaided monocular and binocular viewing, monocular and binocular viewing with the AN/PVS-5A night vision goggles, and models A and B of the AN/PVS-7 biocular night vision goggles. All of the goggles were equipped with 2nd generation tubes. Using a modified Howard- Dolman apparatus to assess stereopsis, all of the goggle-assisted thresholds were very much larger than stereoscopic thresholds achieved with unaided binocular vision. Statistical analysis of the results indicated that stereopsis through night vision goggles, regardless of the model or viewing condition, is essentially eliminated and equivalent to the threshold obtained with unaided monocular viewing. In comparison, spatial resolution capability with all of the goggle systems is superior to performance with unaided vision. In agreement with previously published data, visual acuity with the goggles is approximately 20/ 50, but only for high contrast targets and simulated full moon ambient light levels. As light levels decrease to quarter moon conditions or target contrasts are reduced to more realistic values, visual spatial resolution with the goggles is much poorer. For infantry use, any differences in visual performance between monocular, biocular, and binocular designs probably are not operationally meaningful.

The spectral transmissivity of each part was measured from wavelengths of 450 nm through 950 nm. Some parts were also measured at several different angles relative to the optical axis of the spectroradiometric instrument. The measurements yielded both visible light and near infrared (NIR) spectra. The NIR data were used to calculate night vision goggle-weighted transmissivity (TNVG) values (Pinkus and Task, 1997). TNVG is a measure of a transparency's compatibility when it is used in conjunction with night vision goggles (NVGs). NVGs utilize the NIR portion (600 nm through 950 nm) of the night sky ambient illumination. Generally speaking, the higher the TNVG coefficient, the higher the NVG visual performance (Pinkus & Task, 1998a; Pinkus & Task, 1997).

Book excerpt: This paper describes the research and experimental flight test activities conducted by the Italian Air Force Official Test Centre (RSV), in collaboration with Alenia Aermacchi and Cranfield University, in order to confer night vision imaging systems (NVIS) capability to the Italian TORNADO Interdiction and Strike and Electronic Combat and Reconnaissance aircraft.The activities included design, development, test, and evaluation activities, including night vision goggle (NVG) integration, cockpit instruments, and external lighting modifications, as well as various ground test sessions and a total of 18 flight test sorties.RSV and Litton Precision Products were responsible for coordinating and conducting the installation of the internal and external lights.Particularly, an iterative process was established allowing in-site rapid correction of the major deficiencies encountered during the ground and flight test sessions.Both single-ship (day/night) and formation (night) flights were performed, with testing activities shared among the test crews involved, allowing for a redundant examination of the various test items by all participants.An innovative test matrix was developed and implemented by RSV for assessing the operational suitability and effectiveness of the various modifications implemented.Also important was the definition of test criteria for Pilot and Weapon Systems Officer workload assessment during the accomplishment of various operational tasks during NVG missions.Furthermore, the specific technical and operational elements required for evaluating the modified helmets were identified, allowing an exhaustive comparative evaluation of the two proposed solutions (i.e., HGU-55P and HGU-55G modified helmets) The initial compatibility problems encountered were progressively mitigated by incorporating modifications in both front and rear cockpits at various stages of the test campaign.This process allowed considerable enhancement of the TORNADO NVIS configuration, giving good medium- to high-level NVG operational capability to the aircraft.Further developments also include the internal/external lighting for the Italian TORNADO "Mid-Life Update" and other programs such as AMX aircraft internal/external light modification/testing and the activities addressing low-altitude NVG operations with fast jets (e.g., TORNADO, AMX, MB-339CD), with a major issue being the safe ejection of aircrew with NVG and NVG modified helmets.Two options have been identified for solving this problem, namely, the modification of the current Gentex HGU-55 helmets and the design of a new helmet incorporating a reliable NVG connection/disconnection device (i.e., a mechanical system fully integrated in the helmet frame) with embedded automatic disconnection capability in case of ejection.Other relevant issues to be accounted for in these new developments are the helmet dimensions and weight, the NVG usable field of view as a function of eye-relief distance, and the helmet's center of gravity (moment arms) with and without NVG (effect on aircrew fatigue during training and real operational missions).

Using a modified Howard-Dolman apparatus, the stereoscopic threshold was found to be considerably degraded with the man-goggle system when compared to photopic unaided eye performance. Field measurements of relative depth discrimination using all available visual cues showed that performance of the man-goggle system was statistically equivalent only at intermediate distances of 500 feet or less.

Book excerpt: Integrating NVGs into aircraft with incompatible interior designs limits performance and presents safety and operational concerns to the flying communities. Non- ejection safe NVGs and their corresponding carrying case presents a space dilemma forcing pilots to contend with where to safely store the goggles. An example of this occurred when the carrying strap entangled the flight controls of an A-10. Interior aircraft lighting not compatible with the spectral sensitivity of NVGs presents another concern. The prohibitive cost of aircraft modifications has resulted in the application of frequent "quick-fix" solutions. An effective lighting-fix was implemented in the cockpit of the B-1 bomber, but the problem persisted due to non-modified lighting from the aft stations. Aircraft System Program Office s (SPO), attempted to solve this problem by proposing the installation of a light-blocking curtain, separating the two compartments. Fabric samples for the proposed curtain were evaluated to determine the fabric which met the criteria. In the interest of reducing weight and maximizing battery life, NVG manufacturers and field units for the most part, have transitioned from alkaline to lithium batteries. However, with the use of lithium comes environmental, cost, and shipping concerns. The results of a comparative study on various batteries will be presented.

Book excerpt: The Panoramic Night Vision Goggle (PNVG) has begun operational test and evaluation with its 100-degree horizontal by 40-degree vertical field of view (FOV) on different aircraft and at different locations. Two configurations of the PNVG are being evaluated. The first configuration design (PNVG I) is very low in profile and fits underneath a visor. PNVG I can be retained by the pilot during ejection. This configuration is interchangeable with a day helmet mounted tracker and display through a standard universal connector. The second configuration (PNVG II) resembles the currently fielded 40-degree circular FOV Aviator Night Vision Imaging System (ANVIS) and is designed for non-ejection seat aircraft and ground applications. Pilots completed subjective questionnaires after each flight to compare the capability of the 100-degree horizontal by 40-degree vertical PNVG to the 40-degree circular ANVIS across different operational tasks. This paper discusses current findings and pilot feedback from the flight trials Objectives of the next phase of the PNVG program are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Experimental testing of 10 subjects wearing the AN/PVS-5A (II GEN) night vision goggles (NVG) and ANVIS (III GEN) NVG was conducted under field conditions of ambient starlight illumination (approx. 10-5 mL). The parameters measured were: 1) binocular visual acuity (BVA), 2) stereopsis (depth perception), and 3) a subjective forced choice test. Results showed that BVA was 20/124 and 20/86 for the II and III GEN NVG, respectively. This difference was statistically as well as clinically significant. The stereopsis test results were inconclusive and variable because of the limited sample size and relative inexperience of the subjects in using NVG. Neither BVA nor stereopsis with the NVG was found to be related to standard baseline measures of these parameters in the clinic. Even though the ANVIS has better gain, resolution and sensitivity, 6 out of 10 subjects preferred the AN/PVS-5A for viewing the subjective test. This seemingly paradoxical finding was surmised to be a result of the presence or lack of scene contrast due to the differential sensitivities in the II and III GEN photocathode tubes.

Each successive NVG model represents some kind of improvement in terms of size, weight, ruggedness, gain, noise, spectral sensitivity, field-of-view or resolution. The primary focus of this paper is the determination of NVG resolution. Many methods have been devised to measure the resolving power of NVGs and each method has with it an associated variance or accuracy of measurement. This variance is most likely caused by several sources including observer visual capability (since most methods involve visual observations and judgement to assess NVG resolution). The main purpose of this paper is to present the different methods that have been used to assess NVG resolution and to determine to what extent observer visual capability limits the accuracy of NVG resolution measurement. This study uses a methodology that measures an observer's psychometric function when viewing through NVGs (percent correct detection as a function of spatial separation) to determine their visual acuity using probit analysis.

First-, second-, and third-generation image intensification devices are covered. Although the focus is on ground forces, research that addressed aviation issues is also included. The review documents bow soldier performance has improved from advancements in image intensification technology as well as from concerted efforts to address some long-standing training problems. Training research and development issues identified are: determining techniques to train soldiers on NVG technology and its application to night tasks, how to train soldiers to integrate NVGs with other equipment, training to enhance distance estimation abilities of soldiers when using NVGs, and training to improve mounted and dismounted navigation skills with NVGs. Attention must also be paid to developing training techniques that will enable soldiers to overcome the learning plateaus and human factors problems with NVGs so they become truly skilled at night with NVGs.
