Book Proportional Representation and the Constituency Role in Britain

Download or read book Proportional Representation and the Constituency Role in Britain written by Thomas Carl Lundberg and published by Springer. This book was released on 2007-04-12 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lundberg critically examines the claim that party list-elected members of Britain's devolved assemblies, in Wales and Scotland, are somehow 'second-class' representatives. Although list-elected representatives in Britain have a different constituency role, these representatives add an important element of pluralism to Britain's politics.

Book Political Representation and Elections in Britain

Download or read book Political Representation and Elections in Britain written by Peter Pulzer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1972, this edition includes expanded sections on class and voting and elites and participation in modern democracy. Many popular misconceptions - about the militancy of party activists, the relations between MPs and constituents, the role of TV and the fairness of the electoral system - are critically examined. Equally important is the review of representational theories, from Greek to Victorian, in the light of what we know today about the workings of Parliament, the role of pressure groups and the mixture of rational and irrational motives in human behaviour. A range of twentieth century critiques, including those of Robert Michels, Joseph Schumpeter, Robert Dahl and Peter Bachrach is presented. Wherever possible, British experience is compared with that of the USA, continental Europe or the Commonwealth.

Book Elections in Britain Today

Download or read book Elections in Britain Today written by Dick Leonard and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1996-10-31 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a lively and authoritative account by a leading political journalist and former MP of how the British electoral system works. It is addressed primarily to intelligent voters, but also to students of political science, government and British Constitution at universities, colleges and schools. It answers central questions such as: When are elections held? Who can vote? What happens on polling day? And how does one become an MP? It explains clearly how and why constituency boundaries have to be altered, how the parties are organized, how campaigns are conducted, the role of the media, how reliable opinion polls are and what happens at by-elections. This completely revised and up-dated edition deals also with local elections, referenda and elections to the European Parliament and describes clearly the main features of other electoral systems, including the main variations of proportional representation. The annexes contain a mass of electoral statistics and a thorough bibliography.

Book Representative democracy

Download or read book Representative democracy written by Ron Johnston and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Members of Parliament in the United Kingdom are elected to represent geographic constituencies; but how are these defined and what are the consequences for democracy? Tracing the UK’s system of parliamentary representation from its origins in the thirteenth century right through to the present, this comprehensive new survey reveals how a system initially designed to restrain the power of monarchs gradually evolved to serve their interests, then those of political parties before the twentieth century ‘settlement’ of an independent process for revising the constituency map. That settlement is now under pressure, with the traditional pattern of constituencies representing communities about to be replaced by one which elevates numbers above community. Advanced under the slogan of ‘making votes equal’, this new regime promises fairness yet, as the authors show, is destined to fail to address the disproportional and biased election results that have long been a feature of UK politics. Concluding with a detailed consideration of the ways in which various parts of the UK have embraced alternatives to first-past-the-post over the last two decades, this book serves as a timely reminder that the needs of political parties do not always coincide with those of us, the electors.

Book The British Electoral System A Demoratic One

Download or read book The British Electoral System A Demoratic One written by Sarah Ruhnau and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-10-21 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1,7, Ruhr-University of Bochum (Englisches Seminar), course: Political Cultures in Britain, language: English, abstract: 1. Introduction “The British electoral system is not a gamble.” (Butler, 194). This famous quotation by the British political scientist David E. Butler gives a first insight in how intricate and controversial the topic has been discussed. The quotation also shows that the British voting system never lacked criticism and the fact that Butler has to deny that the electoral system of his home country is ‘a gamble’ makes clear that also a lot of sarcasm was involved while judging it. All of this seems rather negative. However, in this paper it is not my aim to just condemn the electoral system of Britain, nor do I want to prove that it is a gamble. Yet, the severe criticism must have a reason and cannot be completely unfounded. A main argument of critics that is often discussed is a possible lack of democracy. Therefore I would like to examine in how far the British voting system can be reconciled with basic democratic principles. To do so, it will be necessary to give a short overview about democracy and its main features. I also don’t want to neglect to talk about democracy as a political system. In accordance with the main topic, namely the electoral system, I will specifically talk about the competitive and consensus democracy because they are most suitable when it comes to discussing the two main voting systems, viz. proportional representation and majority voting. As it has probably become clear already, I do not want to limit this paper to the British electoral system itself. To illustrate the discrepancy between the first-past-the-post system and the proportional representation, I will use the example of the Federal Republic of Germany. This country can be seen as a representative for a typical consensus democracy and in addition it is using the proportional representation quite successfully. By providing information about the common alternative system of voting, instead of just describing the system which is actually examined, it will hopefully become easier to judge the latter in the end. Arguable is now, to what extent the British electoral system deserves to be criticised or even disapproved. Is it “unpredictable” and “bizarre” as Marco Evers claims? (cf. Evers, 84). Or does the long-lasting tradition of using the majority voting system prove once more that its advantages outweigh its weaknesses and that there should not be any worries concerning its democratic compatibility?

Download or read book Proportional Representation and British Politics Classic Reprint written by John Fischer Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proportional Representation and British Politics We are fortunate in this country in possessing, in spite of all the bitterness of political contests, a general agreement, at east in form, as to the basis of government. Governed We have passed beyond the stage where the basis of Germany, for example, still is - the stage in Government. which the most powerful section of the community holds a different view as to the fundamentals of politics from that of large masses of the people. With us the consent of the governed is accepted as the one possible foundation on which a government can be based. And the criticisms which men of different parties pass on the present state of affairs all take this as their starting point. A Unionist complains that no government in Ireland can be legitimate which is unacceptable to a large and homogeneous Protestant section of the population. A Home Ruler retorts that no government is tolerable to which the majority of the Irish population does not consent. A short time ago the Liberals founded their attack upon the House of Lords on this, that the people had by their representatives consented to legislation and the Lords rejected it. But the Lords themselves in so doing professed only to be seeking the people's consent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
