Book excerpt: Missio Alliance Essential Reading List Hearts Minds Bookstore's Best Books RELEVANT's Top 10 Books Englewood Review of Books Best Books When Soong-Chan Rah planted an urban church in Cambridge, Massachusetts, his first full sermon series was a six-week exposition of the book of Lamentations. Preaching on an obscure, depressing Old Testament book was probably not the most seeker-sensitive way to launch a church. But it shaped their community with a radically countercultural perspective. The American church avoids lament. But lament is a missing, essential component of Christian faith. Lament recognizes struggles and suffering, that the world is not as it ought to be. Lament challenges the status quo and cries out for justice against existing injustices. Soong-Chan Rah's prophetic exposition of the book of Lamentations provides a biblical and theological lens for examining the church's relationship with a suffering world. It critiques our success-centered triumphalism and calls us to repent of our hubris. And it opens up new ways to encounter the other. Hear the prophet's lament as the necessary corrective for Christianity's future. A Resonate exposition of the book of Lamentations.

Book Theodicy in the World of the Bible

Download or read book Theodicy in the World of the Bible written by Antii Laato and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 884 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it justice when deities allow righteous human beings to suffer? This question has occupied the minds of theologians and philosophers for many centuries and is still hotly disputed. All kinds of argument have been developed to exonerate the 'good God' of any guilt in this respect. Since Leibniz it has become customary to describe such attempts as 'theodicy', the justification of God. In modern philosophical debate this use of 'theodicy' has been questioned. However, this volume shows that it is still a workable term for a concept that originated much earlier than is commonly realised. Experts from many disciplines follow the emergence of the theodicy problem from ancient Near Eastern texts of the second millennium BCE through biblical literature, from both Old and New Testament, intertestamental writings including Qumran, Philo Judaeus and rabbinic Judaism.

Book excerpt: "Theodicy" is a book of philosophy by the German polymath Gottfried Leibniz published in 1710, whose optimistic approach to the problem of evil is thought to have inspired Voltaire's "Candide". Much of the work consists of a response to the ideas of the French philosopher Pierre Bayle, with whom Leibniz carried on a debate for many years. The "Theodicy" tries to justify the apparent imperfections of the world by claiming that it is optimal among all possible worlds. It must be the best possible and most balanced world, because it was created by an all powerful and all knowing God, who would not choose to create an imperfect world if a better world could be known to him or possible to exist. In effect, apparent flaws that can be identified in this world must exist in every possible world, because otherwise God would have chosen to create the world that excluded those flaws. Leibniz distinguishes three forms of evil: moral, physical, and metaphysical. Moral evil is sin, physical evil is pain, and metaphysical evil is limitation. God permits moral and physical evil for the sake of greater goods, and metaphysical evil is unavoidable since any created universe must necessarily fall short of God's absolute perfection.

Book Revival of Piety Through an Islamic Theodicy

Download or read book Revival of Piety Through an Islamic Theodicy written by Tallal M Zeni and published by Tallal\Zeni. This book was released on 2020-03-13 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of evil has confounded many who have pondered upon it and hindered many from attaining faith. In addition to surveying various Muslim and non-Muslim theodicies, this book proposes a multifaceted, complex and detailed theodicy. This theodicy will reconcile God's allowance of evil in this world with His holiness, wisdom, omnipotence, justice and generosity. It will also elucidate many of the Holy Lord's wise purposes such as manifesting the meanings and consequences of a greater number of His Beautiful Names, as well as bringing forth those whom He loves and favours, i.e. the prophets, the truly faithful, the martyrs and the righteous. In addition, it will become evident that Islam, through the Qur'an and Sunna of the Prophet Muhammad, provides the most coherent theodicy regarding this world and the Hereafter. That said, the objective of this theodicean knowledge is not solely an intellectual pursuit; rather, the greater objective of this book is to provide a practical theodicy. In doing so it will, by God's grace, allow the believers to achieve certainty and piety, and thereafter act righteously. Therefore, the ultimate goals are a revival of piety and a resurgence of righteousness. It is only in this fashion, and by God's providence and grace, that the evil in this world can be reduced and countered. The Book ContentsPart One Chapter One: God's Providence for Humankind Chapter Two: God's Beautiful Names and His Infallibility from any Evil Chapter Three: The Wisdom of God's Creation and Commandments Chapter Four: The Greatness of the Prophets Chapter Five: The Greatness of Muḥammad: The Seal of the Prophets Chapter Six: The Excellence of Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿUthmān and ʿAlī Chapter Seven: PietyPart Two Chapter Eight: Muslim Approaches to the Problems of Evil and Hellfire Chapter Nine: Non-Muslim Approaches to the Problems of Evil and Hellfire Chapter Ten: The Wisdom in Allowing Suffering Chapter Eleven: An Exposition on Evil Chapter Twelve: The Wisdom in Allowing Evil Chapter Thirteen: HypocrisyPart Three Chapter Fourteen: Hellfire Chapter Fifteen: Paradise EpilogueAbout the Author Tallal M. Zeni has previously translated Ibn al-Qayyim's thoughts on theodicy in Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya on Divine Wisdom and the Problem of Evil. Book Dictionary of the Old Testament Prophets

Download or read book Dictionary of the Old Testament Prophets written by G MCCONVILLE and published by Inter-Varsity Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 1542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of the prophets make up over a quarter of the Old Testament. But perhaps no other portion of the Old Testament is more misunderstood by readers today. For some, prophecy conjures up knotted enigmas, opaque oracles and terrifying visions of the future. For others it raises expectations of a plotted-out future to be reconstructed from disparate texts. And yet the prophets have imprinted the language of faith and imagination with some of its most sublime visions of the future - nations streaming to Zion, a lion lying with a lamb, and endlessly fruiting trees on the banks of a flowing river. We might view the prophets as stage directors for Israel's unfolding drama of redemption. Drawing inspiration from past acts in that drama and invoking fresh words from its divine author, these prophets speak a language of sinewed poetry, their words and images arresting the ear and detonating in the mind. For when Yahweh roars from Zion and thunders from Jerusalem, the pastures of the shepherds dry up, the crest of Carmel withers, and the prophetic word buffets those selling the needy for a pair of sandals. The Dictionary of the Old Testament: Prophets is the only reference book of its kind. Not only does it focus exclusively on the prophetic books; it also plumbs their imagery of mountains and wilderness, flora and fauna, temple and Zion. It maps and guides us through topics such as covenant and law, exile and deliverance, forgiveness and repentance, and the Day of the Lord. Here the nature of prophecy is searched out in its social, historical, literary and psychological dimensions as well as its synchronic spread of textual links and associations. And the formation of the prophetic books into their canonical collection, including the Book of the Twelve, is explored and weighed for its significance. Then too, contemporary approaches such as canonical criticism, conversation analysis, editorial/redaction criticism, feminist interpretation, literary approaches and rhetorical criticism are summed up and assayed. Even the afterlife of these great texts is explored in articles on the history of interpretation as well as on their impact in the New Testament.

Book The Law and the Prophets

Download or read book The Law and the Prophets written by Stephen B. Chapman and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2000 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The standard theory of Old Testament canon formation describes a literary process of linear development in three successive stages. In spite of intermittent criticism, the theory has continued to find its place in textbooks and introductions. Here Stephen B. Chapman marshals all of the important counter-arguments to the theory and proposes a fresh way to conceive of the canonical process, based upon evidence internal and external to the biblical text.He argues against the standard theory by exposing its internal inconsistencies and critiquing its methodological presuppositions, especially its assumptions about human agency and the nature of 'canonization.' Using Charles Altieri's literary application of Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor's theory of the self, the author redescribes the canonization of the Old Testament as a process of 'strong evaluation', whose goal was to provide a religious framework for the evaluation of personal and communal alternatives, rather than the imposition of ideology. He redefines the Old Testament 'canon' as the theological 'grammar' formed by the coordination of discrete scriptures into a coherent collection, but retaining their plurality as integral to canonicity.Stephen B. Chapman also demonstrates that the status of the prophetic writings prior to their canonization has remained an intractable problem for the standard theory. He shows how nomistic assumptions about canonization have sustained the view that the prophetic corpus was always subordinate to the Pentateuch, even though this view is at odds with the exegetical evidence. By detailed analysis of 'canon-conscious' editing within the Pentateuch and the prophetic corpus, he illustrates how collections of Law and Prophets developed simultaneously and mutually influenced each other.

Book excerpt: An investigation of the literary structure and rhetorical challenge that prompted the book's production. Moller argues that the book of Amos captures and presents the debate between Amos and his eighth-century audience. When read in the light of Israel's fall, the presentation of Amos struggling (and failing) to convince his contemporaries of the imminent divine punishment functions as a powerful warning to subsequent Judaean readers.

Book excerpt: The Israelite prophets as historical persons, as literary characters and as anonymous artists. Whereas modern methods of literary analysis have brought the artistic qualities of the books of the Prophets increasingly into focus during the past century, various modes of deconstruction have made the historical prophets themselves an ever more elusive phenomenon. Passages in the Old Testament describing their work and experiences are not read as biography anymore, but as literary fiction intended to picture the prophets as heroes of faith. The real ‘prophets’ were the anonymous artists who were responsible for the final editing of the legacy of the historical prophets and who often used the authority of their predecessors to promulgate their own theological views. This volume brings together studies about this theme by members of the British and Dutch societies for Old Testament study. Attempts to recover some of the biographical data and authentic experiences of the prophets alternate with penetrating analyses of the theological depth and stylistic virtuosity of the prophetic books. The volume will be particularly useful to all those interested in the interpretation of the prophetic books of the Old Testament.
