Download or read book Prophets of the Great Spirit written by Alfred A. Cave and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets of the Great Spirit offers an in-depth look at the work of a diverse group of Native American visionaries who forged new, syncretic religious movements that provided their peoples with the ideological means to resist white domination. By blending ideas borrowed from Christianity with traditional beliefs, they transformed ?high? gods or a distant and aloof creator into a powerful, activist deity that came to be called the Great Spirit. These revitalization leaders sought to regain the favor of the Great Spirit through reforms within their societies and the inauguration of new ritual practices. Among the prophets included in this study are the Delaware Neolin, the Shawnee Tenkswatawa, the Creek ?Red Stick? prophets, the Seneca Handsome Lake, and the Kickapoo Kenekuk. Covering more than a century, from the early 1700s through the Kickapoo Indian removal of the Jacksonian Era, the prophets of the Great Spirit sometimes preached armed resistance but more often used nonviolent strategies to resist white cultural domination. Some prophets rejected virtually all aspects of Euro-American culture. Others sought to assure the survival of their culture through selective adaptation. Alfred A. Cave explains the conditions giving rise to the millenarian movements in detail and skillfully illuminates the key histories, personalities, and legacies of the movement. Weaving an array of sources into a compelling narrative, he captures the diversity of these prophets and their commitment to the common goal of Native American survival.

Download or read book How to Profit from Prophets written by Maurice A. Fetty and published by CSS Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prophets have not done well in history -- at least not by ordinary standards: Elijah seemed to be the only one in Israel resisting Baalism. Amos was told to keep silent and go back where he came from. Jeremiah was scorned and imprisoned. John, the Baptist was beheaded, and... Jesus, the greatest of them all, was crucified. By ordinary standards the prophets have not done well because, as Jesus said, we ignore or kill the messengers of God. And yet it is the extraordinary standards of the prophets that intrigue us, inspire us, and stimulate our minds and consciences to God's ways and thoughts. Because of their extraordinary standards the prophets continue to shape us and history. In this challenging Advent-Christmas book, Maurice A. Fetty reminds us again how it is important to "profit from prophets." Maurice A. Fetty is Senior Minister of the Congregational Church of Manhasset (United Church of Christ) in Manhasset, New York. He has also served churches in Grand Rapids, Michigan; Minneapolis; East Harlem; and Brooklyn. Fetty holds the Master of Sacred Theology Degree from Union Theological Seminary and the Master of Arts Degree from Christian Theological Seminary. In addition to numerous articles he has authored several books, including Putting Your Life On The Line; Sex, Love And Marriage; and The Divine Advocacy.

Download or read book Moving in the Prophetic written by Gregory Haslam and published by Monarch Books. This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gift of prophecy has always invited some degree of opposition and controversy. It is one of the most vivid displays of God's presence and power among his people. Many people struggle with the very concept of the validity of prophecy today. They are troubled by the possibility that God may have direct access to our minds. Greg Haslam argues that such concerns are misplaced. Following St Paul's injunction that we should be 'eager to prophesy' he considers how God speaks, and how we should hear him; how we can test and deliver a prophetic word; and how we can grow in confidence as we learn to discern what the Spirit is saying to the church.

Download or read book Omens and Oracles written by Matthew Dillon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 569 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Addressing the role which divination played in ancient Greek society, this volume deals with various forms of prophecy and how each was utilised and for what purpose. Chapters bring together key types of divining, such as from birds, celestial phenomena, the entrails of sacrificed animals and dreams. Oracular centres delivered prophetic pronouncements to enquirers, but in addition, there were written collections of oracles in circulation. Many books were available on how to interpret dreams, the birds and entrails, and divination as a religious phenomenon attracted the attention of many writers. Expert diviners were at the heart of Greek prophecy, whether these were Apollo’s priestesses delivering prose or verse answers to questions put to them by consultants, diviners known as manteis, who interpreted entrails and omens, the chresmologoi, who sang the many oracles circulating orally or in writing, or dream interpreters. Divination was utilised not only to foretell the future but also to ensure that the individual or state employing divination acted in accordance with that divinely prescribed future; it was employed by all and had a crucial role to play in what courses of action both states and individuals undertook. Specific attention is paid in this volume not only to the ancient written evidence, but to that of inscriptions and papyri, with emphasis placed on the iconography of Greek divination.
