Book excerpt: The first chapter of this book deals with the history of Christian mission activity in Western Kenya and points out the particularities of the missionaries as well as the mission churches. Within this context, the history of the African Independent Churches (AICs) is placed, which appear as a mergence of various traditions and motivations: the pursuit of independence from the colonial power and the mission churches connected with it, the preservation of traditional African religiousness and the absorption of Pentecostal piety with its heavy emphasis on the gifts of the spirit. In the following chapters the stance of AICs towards involvement in political debates is explored and discussed. This is done on the basis of semi-structured interviews with local leaders as well as bishops and representatives of church networks. Another topic is the contribution of AICs to the inculturation of the Christian faith in the African context - especially in view of the academic African Theology and the Pentecostal Churches. The last part of the book deals with the question of the future of the AICs and their ecumenical relations - this is done in the context of the rapid expansion Neo-Pentecostal groups and movements.

This movement has fascinated students of history and religion for more than sixty years, but surprisingly has not been extensively studied. This book fills that lacuna. In Women of Fire and Spirit, Cynthia Hoehler-Fatton uses the extensive oral histories and life narratives of active participants in the faith, giving them full voice in constructing the history of their Church. In doing so, she counter-balances the existing historical literature, which draws heavily on colonial records. Hoehler-Fatton's sources call into question the paradigm of "schism" that has dominated the discussion of African independent Christianity. Faith, rather than schism or politics, emerges here as the hallmark of Roho religion. Hoehler-Fatton's book is doubly unusual in foregrounding the role of women in the evolution and expansion of their Church. She traces the gradual transformation of women's involvement from the early years when--drawing on indigenous models of female spirit possession--women acted as soldiers, headed congregations, and served as pastors, to the present condition of Western-style institutionalization and exclusion for women. Despite this marginalization, women members continue to be inspired by the defiance of past heroines.

Book excerpt: Since independence in 1963, Kenya has been a classic personalised patronage state, run by a corrupt elite for its own benefit, as became tragically evident in December 2007's stolen election and its aftermath. Kenya is also said to be 80 percent Christian. Under the bland label 'Kenyan Christianity', several different overlapping realities can be distinguished, and it is these which Gifford investigates in this book, relating them to the country's politics and public life. The politically engaged form that challenged the dysfunctional one-party state in the early 1990s is given due prominence, but Gifford contends that today the mainline churches, both Catholic and Protestant, are marked less by such political engagement than by their involvement in development, in which foreign missionaries and global networks play a huge role. The theology of Kenya's mainline churches is consciously focused on African culture, as a non-negotiable foundation, and the Catholic church has an additional agenda - to Africanise its religious congregations. Kenya is also noted for its rich variety of African indigenous Churches, all originating in a defence of Kenyan cultures, while in recent decades countless Pentecostal churches have also sprung up. They range from affluent middle class churches to refuges for the poor, but nearly all are characterised by a stress on power, success, achievement and prosperity that prioritises modernity rather than traditional culture. Gifford discusses their deployment of the media, crusades, organisation, theology and use of the Bible, and above all the economics that has made this phenomenon possible. The author addresses the question of identity and asks how globalisation, religious pluralism, and the polycentric nature of Christianity affect Christian self-identification and theological reflection. First, religious life and theological reflection among believers in Jesus from Muslim and Hindu background in South Asia is presented in two empirical studies. Secondly, the findings are analysed and interpreted within a broad theoretical framework, drawing on models for syncretistic processes from history of religions, cultural anthropology, and Christian theology. Finally, the study concludes with a systematic-theological perspective on the interreligious hermeneutics underlying the changes of Christianity and discusses how interreligious hermeneutics might inform missiology as well as Christian theologies of religions and how this might challenge our understanding of the church's nature and mission. In conclusion, it is argued that a global, polycentric Christianity can be interpreted as fellowship created by the Spirit and centred on Christ.

Krobo culture has always accepted and expressed the presence of the Supreme Creator in all (without exception) aspects of social, occupational, emotional engagements of life. Throughout the book, there are illustrations depicting the essence of God in Krobo traditional religion before the arrival of Christian missionaries from Europe. The only new concept my ancestors acquired from the missionaries was the story of the life and teaching of Christ and the doctrine as the Savior and Mawu (second person in the Trinity) at the same time. Krobo culture eloquently and sincerely found expression in names like Mawulede (God’s wish); Mawulepee (God did it); Mawu le ha nor (it is God who provides); and in sentences expressing hope, as in Mawu nge (God lives), Mawumaalewor (God would care for us), and others all of which existed before the story of the cross. The book is the manifestation of what is happening today with the gospel and tradition on the continent with the self-acclaimed preachers of the gospel and how they have misrepresented the whole doctrine of Christianity to acquire wealth rather than preaching salvation to the people of Africa. These “preachers” I refer to as false prophets and mostly blasphemers who have taken undue advantage of the ignorance of the people of Africa wisely because religion is part and parcel of life in the African society. This book goes at length to delineate Christian influence on the cultural values in Africa using the Krobo experience and to display cultural traits and interaction with the missionaries. It will also go into Christian tradition and the African tradition, which apparently would lead us into the training of the clergy and show why Christianity is being represented deceptively by “false prophets” in Africa and sometimes at the expense of our tradition. There will be a discussion on Krobo culture and the gospel as well as cultural norms that affect Christians the most. A full discussion depicts the world of blasphemy which preachers and people call it Christianity but which I term “victims of Christianity.” It is very important to admire our traditional saints and show the similarities with the religious saints. And who are the traditional saints anyhow? In the end, I conclude with a discussion on poverty, spelling out the tradition that must be reformed to diminish poverty which is portrayed in the book as the enemy of culture and development. This book is relevant for contemporary religious and cultural appreciation, what it is to be Christian and African no less than the proper training of the clergy that befits the African society before they are “shipped” to Africa or any other developing country with different cultural orientation for adaptation.
