Book Joseph Smith III

Download or read book Joseph Smith III written by Roger D. Launius and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interesting, well-researched biography of the founder of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints covers the 54 years of his presidency, a tenure marked by Mormon factionalism that he succeeded in controlling. The son of the founder of Mormonism, Joseph Smith III at first resisted succeeding his father as leader and prophet but, as his biographer underscores, his governance from 1860 until his death in 1914 was fiercely committed to the religious legacy of his parent. Differing in style from the elder Smith's "sometimes disastrous impracticality," his son exemplified rugged individualism with a secular pragmatism that sprang from his legal education. An opponent of polygamy, as proclaimed by Brigham Young, the younger Smith established a viable bureaucracy and a style of leadership that characterizes the Mormon community today, notes the author, a military historian.

Book excerpt: The aim of this Third Book of the Prophet Chronicles series is to inspire all saints to completion and perfection in Christ. God is releasing a new level of intimate, intercessory prayer to empower us to live, move and have our being in the Lord for fully mature Bridehood and Sonship. This increasing refreshing of the Holy Spirit is the wind in our sails through this End of Days intensity and the stormy sea of life. At the same time, the best of times and the worst of times will be realized with hope that does not make us ashamed. These last days are fast approaching and indeed have already begun, but will fully accelerate in the Fall of 2020. We believe we are living in the last days of the Church Age and eleventh hour for the Church at large before Jesus' return and the Kingdom Age. It is the end of spiritual forces dominating fallen man and fallen creation through the kingdom of darkness. Five areas of continental America will be shaken, as well as civil war and revolution with catastrophic judgments unfolding in a few short years following the 2020 presidential election. The greatest soul harvest of blood and fire salvation in history, involving up to fifty million Americans, with mighty translation signs and resurrection wonders as in the days of Moses and Elijah will take place. Jesus, the Head of the Church and the King of His Kingdom of love, prepares the Elijah and Moses Companies of humble but sure prophets, apostles and sold-out-to-Jesus saints. "...A people come, great and strong, the like of whom has never been..." (Joel2:2). The Bride and Sons are almost ready to be revealed in these years of final preparation for those who are soon to come after these things, "...those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation" (Hebrews 9:28b, NKJV).

Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man—a fellow slave—seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. Isaiah and Samuel's love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation's harmony. With a lyricism reminiscent of Toni Morrison, Robert Jones, Jr., fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike, from Isaiah and Samuel to the calculating slave master to the long line of women that surround them, women who have carried the soul of the plantation on their shoulders. As tensions build and the weight of centuries—of ancestors and future generations to come—culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets fearlessly reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.

Book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel

Download or read book The David Story A Translation with Commentary of 1 and 2 Samuel written by Robert Alter and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2009-10-21 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A masterpiece of contemporary Bible translation and commentary."—Los Angeles Times Book Review, Best Books of 1999 Acclaimed for its masterful new translation and insightful commentary, The David Story is a fresh, vivid rendition of one of the great works in Western literature. Robert Alter's brilliant translation gives us David, the beautiful, musical hero who slays Goliath and, through his struggles with Saul, advances to the kingship of Israel. But this David is also fully human: an ambitious, calculating man who navigates his life's course with a flawed moral vision. The consequences for him, his family, and his nation are tragic and bloody. Historical personage and full-blooded imagining, David is the creation of a literary artist comparable to the Shakespeare of the history plays.

Book The Word of God in Transition

Download or read book The Word of God in Transition written by William M. Schniedewind and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chronicler distinguishes between "traditional prophets" and "inspired messengers," and thereby highlights a radical transition in the meaning of the "word of God" which takes place in the post-exilic period. The Chronicler summarizes his perspective in 2 Chron. 36.16, saying that Israel rejected "his prophets," "the messengers of God," and "his word" (i.e. Torah). This distinction is reflected in the forms and functions of prophetic speech in the books of Chronicles. Thus, the prophets speak to the king, and the inspired messengers (e.g. priests, levites) speak to the people. The prophets interpret narrative events for the king; they explain how God acts. The inspired messengers exhort the people, admonishing them how they should act. The prophets' speeches usually do not use any kind of inspiration formula, but the inspired messengers' speeches are prefaced with possession formulas. These possession formulas are not typical of classical prophecy and mark the rise of a new kind of prophecy, namely, the inspired interpretation of texts. These inspired messengers are thus forerunners of the inspired interpreters of scripture in Qumran, early Christianity and Judaism.>
