Download or read book Property Possession as Identity written by Patrick X. Monaghan and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this essay, Monaghan argues for an account of property possession as strict, numerical identity. According to this account, for an entity to possess a property is for that entity and that property to be numerically identical to each other. To defend this view, he argues against two views he call Externalism and Internalism about property possession. Monaghan argues that it is impossible for one entity to possess a second entity as a property. He provides replies to variety of objections one might raise against his account.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The late nineteenth and early twentieth century in America is an interesting time when examined through the lens of property ownership and self ownership. Technically and legally, married women could own property and many had enjoyed this right since the first Married Women's Property Acts in the 1840s. Technically and legally, African Americans enjoyed freedom and the rights as citizens of the United States. Additionally, authors were gaining rights of ownership over their published texts in a manner striking in its contrast to the culture of reprinting that thrived mid-century. We can understand these three systems of ownership as interrelated as they all connectively feature in the debate over who will have power and access to power in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century and as they all have a significant role to play in the attempt to preserve national manhood.

Book The Social Psychology of Material Possessions

Download or read book The Social Psychology of Material Possessions written by Helga Dittmar and published by Prentice Hall. This book was released on 1992 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individual ownership of material possessions is deeply rooted in Western culture, yet psychology has tended either to overlook its role entirely or to be concerned only with the functions it fulfils intra-individually and interpersonally. This book addresses the sorely neglected subject of the social psychological meanings and functions of possessions and property. Their significance is examined in reviews of relevant research and discussion of theoretical perspectives. Instinctual and functional explanations of the relationship between people and their 'things' are considered, and a social constructionist approach is introduced which argues that the symbolic nature of material objects plays an important role for the owner's social and personal identity. The author draws upon sources from diverse fields, including consumer research, sociology, anthropology and psychology, to explore the link between identity and possessions. These materials are supplemented by her own original research. The emerging 'identity through possessions' model is related to the contemporary Western notion of identity as wealth-unrelated individuality, and implications of the proposition that material symbols constitute a pervasive context of social psychological processes are discussed. The Social Psychology of Material Possessions will serve both as a supplementary textbook for undergraduate psychology students and as an intriguing essay for social psychologists.

Law and Economics of Possession uses insights from economics, psychology and history to analyse possession in law, compare and contrast possession with ownership, break down the elements of possession as a fact and as a right, challenge the adage that 'possession is 9/10 of the law', examine possession as notice, explain the heuristics of possession, debunk the behavioural studies which confuse possession with ownership, explore the LightSquared dispute from the perspective of 'possession' of spectrum frequency and provide new insights to old questions such as first possession, adverse possession and property jurisdiction. The authors include leading property scholars, who examine possession laws in, among others, the USA, UK, China, Taiwan, Japan, Germany, France, Israel, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Austria.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing is more important in English land law than 'possession'. It is the foundation of all title, rights and remedies. But what exactly is it, and why does it still matter? This book, first published in 2006, is about the meaning, significance and practical effect of the concept of possession in contemporary land law. It explains the different meanings of possession, the relationship between possession and title, and the ways in which the common law and equity do, and do not, protect possession. The rights and remedies of freeholders, tenants and mortgage lenders, between themselves and against third parties, are all to some extent dependent on questions of status and possession. This book shows how. It is designed to provide an understanding of the basic principles for the student, and answers to difficult, real problems for the practitioner.
