Book Oxidation of Tungsten

Download or read book Oxidation of Tungsten written by Vincent David Barth and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a detailed review of available information on the oxidation of W and its alloys. W is relatively inert below 700 C. As the temperature is increased above this level, however, oxidation becomes progressively more rapid, reaching catastrophic rates at temperatures around 1200 C and above. Various theories for the mechanism and rates of W oxidation at different temperatures are reviewed, and the effect of pressure and water vapor on the stability of W oxides is discussed in detail. The elevatedtemperature reactions of W with other materials, such as refractory oxides, and with gases other than oxygen also are covered. Information on the protection of W by alloying and coating is included. (Author).

Book Vanadium Oxide Thin Films Obtained by Thermal Annealing of Layers Deposited by RF Magnetron Sputtering at Room Temperature

Download or read book Vanadium Oxide Thin Films Obtained by Thermal Annealing of Layers Deposited by RF Magnetron Sputtering at Room Temperature written by Hernan M. R. and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter describes a new deposition method proposed to achieve Vanadium Oxide VOx/V2O5 thin films with high temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), intended to be used as functional material in IR microsensors (bolometers). The main aim of the work is to attain a deposition method compatible with the lift-off microstructuring technique in order to avoid the use of a reactive-ion etching (RIE) process step to selectively remove the VOx/V2O5 deposited layer in the course of the definition of the bolometer geometry, preventing the harmful effects linked to the spatial variability and the lack of selectivity of the RIE process. The proposed technique makes use of a two-stage process to produce the well-controlled VOx or V2O5 thin films by applying a suitable thermal annealing to a previously deposited layer, which was obtained before at room temperature by RF magnetron sputtering and patterned by lift-off. A set of measurements has been carried out with thin films attained in order to check the quality and properties of the materials achieved with this method. The results reached with V2O5 pure phase films are consistent with a charge transport model based on the small polarons hopping derived from Mott's model under the Schnakenberg form.

Book Preparation and Properties of Thermochromic Vanadium Oxyfluoride Thin Films for Energy Efficient Device Applications

Download or read book Preparation and Properties of Thermochromic Vanadium Oxyfluoride Thin Films for Energy Efficient Device Applications written by K. A. Khan and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vanadium oxyfluoride thin films were prepared by r.f. magnetron sputtering in Ar, O2 and CF4 ambient followed by annealing post-treatment. The films were analyzed by Rytherford Backscattering Spectroscopy and Transmission Electron Microscopy. Optical investigation shows that the films are thermochromic in nature and have significant enchancement in transmittance over VO2. These effect may be of importance for energy-efficient device applications. [Author's abstract].

Book The Physics and Chemistry of Carbides Nitrides and Borides

Download or read book The Physics and Chemistry of Carbides Nitrides and Borides written by R. Freer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbides, nitrides and borides are families of related refractory materials. Traditionally they have been employed in applications associated with engineering ceramics where either high temperature strength or stability is of primary importance. In recent years there has been a growing awareness of the interesting electrical, thermal and optical properties exhibited by these materials, and the fact that many can be prepared as monolithic ceramics, single crystals and thin films. In practical terms carbides, nitrides and borides offer the prospect of a new generation of semiconductor materials, for example, which can function at very high temperatures in severe environmental conditions. However, as yet, we have only a limited understanding of the detailed physics and chemistry of the materials and how the preparation techniques influence the properties. Under the auspices of the NATO Science Committee an Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) was held on the Physics and Chemistry of Carbides, Nitrides and Borides (University of Manchester, 18-22 September, 1989) in order to assess progress to date and identify the most promising themes and materials for future research. An international group of 38 scientists considered developments in 5 main areas: The preparation of powders, monolithic ceramics, single crystals and thin films; Phase transformations, microstructure, defect structure and mass transport; Materials stability; Theoretical studies; Electrical, thermal and optical properties of bulk materials and thin films.
