Book excerpt: "I have the honor to transmit herewith for publication a brief but comprehensive discussion of the characteristics and properties of wood in general and of our American timbers in particular, which it is hoped may be useful to engineers, architects, carpenters, lumbermen, and all wood workers. The paper was prepared by Mr. Filibert Roth, in charge of the investigations in timber physics. Although much of the information contained in this bulletin exists in the experience of practical woodworkers and in books in other languages, it has never before been published in English is systematic and accessible form and with special application to American timbers. Such a publication can not, of course, exhaust any part of this great subject. It is desired that it may be followed by a more elaborate treatise when additional knowledge has been gained through the investigations now in progress. The information it contains is largely based on actual experiment and scientific observation, and will, it is hoped, not only explain the experiences of the practical worker with his material, but will remove erroneous notions, and thus aid in improving the practice and lead to a more rational use of our forest resources."--Letter of Transmittal, Page [i].

Book Physical and Related Properties of 145 Timbers

Download or read book Physical and Related Properties of 145 Timbers written by J.F. Rijsdijk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1994-10-31 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To obtain the best attainable end-use stability of a wooden product it is essential to have information on the movement and shrinkage that may be expected. In this context, it is essential when drying timber to choose an accurate drying schedule in relation to the shrinkage figures and the risk of deformation. Generally, many timber properties are closely related to the density and the nominal specific gravity. With the given detailed information (per wood species), the water content (amount of evaporation and energy in timber drying) or the void volume (in case of impregnation, in order to estimate the maximum uptake of a liquid) in the wood can be calculated. The physical properties of 145 commercial timbers have been determined in the past decades. They comprise the shrinkage and swelling values, equilibrium moisture content, hysteresis, density and nominal specific gravity, including the variation coefficients of these values. The shrinkage, swelling and hysteresis are presented in graphic form; the other information in tabular form. Additional information about some other properties of physical nature has been added, e.g. gluelam products and rattan.

  • Pages : 324 pages

Download or read book Timber written by H E Desch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-06-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly 60 years, Timber: Structure, Properties, Conversion, and Use has been the authoritative text on timber technology. Now in its seventh edition, this book remains a vital resource, providing accurate, comprehensive, and fact-driven information for students and professionals in the field. From basic coverage of timber structure, properties, processing, and utilization, to more in-depth scientific investigations, this book covers all the issues and topics of concern to readers with a wide range of levels of sophistication. Timber technology has not stood still since the last revision; Timber: Structure, Properties, Conversion, and Use has kept the pace, exploring such high-tech topics as computer-aided wood identification and log conversion, radio frequency drying of wood, enhancement of wood with plastics, application of preservatives with high-pressure vacuum systems, and the development and application of flame-retardant solutions. Other timely updates include enlarging the chapter on mechanical performance to cover elastic behavior, toughness, and the use of structural-sized timber for strength tests. The chapter on board materials has also been extensively updated and enlarged to include information on new boards and structural composites that have emerged since the last edition. One of the most important strengths of Timber: Structure, Properties, Conversion, and Use is its versatility as a reference for timber professionals while remaining approachable to students in the field. Evidence of the book?s comprehensiveness and versatility becomes clear as it teaches readers about such wide-ranging topics as: identification and nomenclature of timbers variability in cellular features between species principal chemical constituents in timber structural variability caused by natural defects such as bark pockets, resin streaks, and brittleheart determination of density and moisture content in timber thermal and acoustic properties of wood conversion equipment such as circular saws, band saws, frame saws, and chipper canters health and safety issues in the industry adhesives, metal connectors, and joint design forest and millyard pests application of preservatives and finishes From basic identification and timber nomenclature to methods of sap displacement and tests of electrical conductivity, Timber: Structure, Properties, Conversion, and Use covers it all. And while it is no longer possible for any one individual to write authoritatively on every aspect of timber technology, embracing as it does structure, properties, conversion, utilization, and behavior in service, J. M. Dinwoodie has gathered expert opinions and expanded on original author H. E. Desch?s approach and vision to continue to provide the authoritative text on timber technology.

Book excerpt: Pergamon Series of Monographs on Furniture and Timber, Volume 8: Timber: Its Mechanical Properties and Factors Affecting its Structural Use focuses on the mechanical and technical properties of timber, including how a tree grows and develops. This book discusses the growth of the tree, structure of wood, fundamental properties, factors affecting strength, structural grading, and seasoning. The strength properties, assessing strength properties, and testing for strength are also covered. The strength of wood varies almost with every species and factors affecting this in relation to working stresses are fully indicated in this text. This publication is intended as an introductory textbook on the mechanical and technical properties of wood, and as such, will be useful to students, architects, builders, and others requiring knowledge on the subject.

This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of almost 40 years various researchers, at what used to be TNO's Forest Products Research Institute, currently the TNO Centre for Timber Research, conducted studies into the physical properties of wood. The first studies and calculations were carried out by Mr E. Prochaska, after which Mrs G.M.C. Koning-Vrolijk continued the work. Indeed Mrs Koning-Vrolijk wrote the Institute's first publication (1962), an Eng lish version of which was published in 1963 (3) on the occasion of FAO and IUFRO Conferences held in the United States. Thereafter, the Institute's work was carried on by Mr A. Govers, Mr J.F. Rijsdijk and Mr P.B. Laming. Their research resulted in a second publication (Laming 1978) in which not only the mechanical properties but also the physical properties of 48 wood species were described. During the bulk of this period technical support was provided by Mr J.C. Verwijs and more recently by Mr L. van Brussel. After extensive studies, the Belgian Timber Information Institute also adopted the same research methods as TNO in order to obtain physical data on a number of wood species which were of commercial interest to the Belgian market but which had not been covered in TNO's studies. The Belgian Timber Information Institute's suggestion to include their research results, on a total of 17 wood species in this publication, .was therefore gratefully accepted.
