Book The Ecology of Patterened Boreal Peatlands of Northern Minnesota A Community Profile

Download or read book The Ecology of Patterened Boreal Peatlands of Northern Minnesota A Community Profile written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A peatland is defined as any ecosystem with a waterlogged substrate and at least 30 cm of peat (Kivinen and Pakarinen 1981). Once peat has accumulated to this depth the availability of essential nutrients falls sharply. Plant species are no longer rooted in mineral soil, and they must absorb all their mineral nutrients from within a waterlogged, anoxic, peat mass. Nutrients, however, are continualLy locked up within the peat, because the low levels of oxygen inhibit microbial activity and nutrient cycling. The supply of nutrients is therefore determined by transport processes that carry nutrients in from the (1) atmosphere, (2) adjacent mineraL uplands, or (3) underlying mineral soil. These processes are strongly modified within a peatland by the physical properties of the peat and the active properties of the peat and the active sequestering of ions by the living plants. The accumulation of peat therefore creates a uniquely integrated system in which there is a delicate balance between physical and biotic processes.

Book Boreal Peatland Ecosystems

    Book Details:
  • Author : R.K. Wieder
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2006-10-16
  • ISBN : 3540319131
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book Boreal Peatland Ecosystems written by R.K. Wieder and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first truly ecosystem-oriented book on peatlands. It adopts an ecosystems approach to understanding the world's boreal peatlands. The focus is on biogeochemical patterns and processes, production, decomposition, and peat accumulation, and it provides additional information on animal and fungal diversity. A recurring theme is the legacy of boreal peatlands as impressive accumulators of carbon as peat over millennia.

Book Wetland Habitats of North America

Download or read book Wetland Habitats of North America written by Darold P. Batzer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Wetland Habitats of North America is essential reading for everyone who studies, manages, or visits North American wetlands. It fills an important void in the wetland literature, providing accessible and succinct descriptions of all of the continent’s major wetland types.” Arnold van der Valk, Iowa State University “Batzer and Baldwin have compiled the most comprehensive compendium of North American wetland habitats and their ecology that is presently available—a must for wetland scientists and managers.” Irving A. Mendelssohn, Louisiana State University "If you want to gain a broad understanding of the ecology of North America’s diverse wetlands, Wetland Habitats of North America is the book for you. Darold Batzer and Andrew Baldwin have assembled an impressive group of regional wetland scientists who have produced a virtual encyclopedia to the continent’s wetlands. Reading the book is like a road trip across the Americas with guided tours of major wetland types by local experts. Your first stop will be to coastal wetlands with eight chapters covering tidal wetlands along the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts. Then you’ll travel inland where you can visit any or all of 18 types ranging from bottomland swamps of the Southeast to pothole marshes of the Northern Prairies to montane wetlands of the Rockies to tropical swamps of Central America and desert springs wetlands. All in one book—I’m impressed! Every wetlander should add this book to her or his swampland library. Ralph Tiner, University of Massachusetts–Amherst
